"abstractNote": "Nel complesso delle terre sigillate rinvenute a Pompei, le importazioni orientali sono decisamente inferiori rispetto ai manufatti provenienti dal centro della Penisola. Tale tendenza, tuttavia, ha conosciuto una leggera inversione di marcia, soprattutto a seguito delle intense attività di scavo che hanno interessato il Parco Archeologico negli ultimi decenni che hanno documentato anche una estesa variabilità delle produzioni attestate. Oltre alla Eastern Sigillata A, i contesti di Pompei hanno restituito numerosi oggetti, ampiamente inediti, a vernice rossa provenienti da altri luoghi del Levante romano. Tra questi, i vasi in sigillata pergamena (ESC) anche con unica pompeiani.\nIn the whole of the Terra Sigillata found in Pompeii, eastern imports are significantly lower than the artefacts from the centre of the Peninsula. This trend, however, has experienced a slight reversal, especially following the intense excavation activities that have taken place in the Archaeological Park in recent decades, which have also documented an extensive variability of the productions attested. In addition to the Eastern Sigillata A, the Pompeii contexts have yielded numerous, largely unpublished, red-painted objects from other red paint from other sites in the Roman Levant. Among them, the vases in sealed parchment (ESC) also with Pompeian uniqueness.",

"abstractNote": "Human society emerged over 6 million years of hominid evolution. During this time group size steadily increased, and to maintain group cohesion human beings gradually evolved a well-developed social intelligence based on the differentiation and refinement of emotions. The neurological structures for emotional expression are part of the primitive brain and developed long before the cognitive equipment for rational intelligence evolved. Indeed, full rationality came rather late in human evolution, and it has only been within the last 100 years that the social conditions emerged for a mass culture based on rationality. A review of the evolution of human society and human cognition illustrates the creation and workings of the human emotional brain and show how it operates independently of and strongly influences the rational brain. If sociology is to advance, research and theory must grapple with both rational and emotional intelligence and focus particularly on the interplay between them.",

"abstractNote": "Most theories of how human cognition is unique propose specific representational capacities or biases, often thought to arise through evolutionary change. In this Perspective, we argue that the evidence that supports these domain-specific theories is confounded by general information-processing differences. We argue that human uniqueness arises through genetic quantitative increases in the global capacity to process information and share it among systems such as memory, attention and learning. This change explains regularities across numerous subdomains of cognition, behavioural comparisons between species and phenomena in child development. This strict evolutionary continuity theory of human intelligence is consistent with comparative evidence about neural evolution and computational constraints of memory on the ability to represent rules, patterns and abstract generalizations. We show how these differences in the degree of information processing capacity yield differences in kind for human cognition relative to other animals.",

"abstractNote": "How does ‘decoration’ work? What are the relations between ‘figurative’ and ‘ornamental’ modes? And how do such modern western distinctions relate to other critical traditions? While these questions have been much debated among art historians, our book offers an ancient visual cultural perspective. On the one hand, we argue, Greek and Roman materials have proved instrumental in shaping modern assumptions. On the other hand, those ideologies are fundamentally removed from ancient ideas: an ancient perspective can therefore shed light on larger aesthetic debates about what images are – or indeed what they should be.This anthology of specially commissioned essays explores a variety of case studies (both literary and art historical alike): it discusses materials from across the ancient Mediterranean, and from Geometric art all the way through to late antiquity; the book also tackles questions of ‘figure’ and ‘ornament’ in relation to different media – including painting, free-standing statues, relief sculpture, mosaics and architecture. A particular feature of the volume lies in bringing together different national academic traditions, building a bridge between formalist approaches and broader cultural historical perspectives.",

"abstractNote": "This article introduces a new quantitative method of dating petroglyphs and describes its initial application. First, the major recent developments in the field of rock art dating are briefly reviewed, and the continuing difficulties in the dating of petroglyphs are elucidated. The archaeological background of the Lake Onega art, its geological setting and archaeogeophysical dating are explained. The theory of microerosion dating is described, together with its first practical application at the site Besov Nos on the shore of Lake Onega. The reliability of both is examined critically. It seems that the most promising options have attracted only limited interest, while those methods that have been afforded the most sustained research efforts have been discredited or provide only tenuous results. Thus the continuing difficulties in this field are to some extent attributable to opportunistic use of sophisticated but not always appropriate technology, combined with a systematic neglect of more modest but dependable methods.",

"abstractNote": "Cooking and common wares presumably produced regionally are frequent in archaeological context of Late Antique rural sites in northeastern Spain. 142 of these wares from four settlements in the region of Vallès, in the surroundings of the ancient city of Barcino/Barcelona, were characterized through a combination of instrumental analytical techniques (OM, WD-XRF, and XRD), with the aim of investigating their provenance and production technology. The results confirm their regional provenance and suggest a local production of a part of the pottery assemblages, while also provide evidence of at least a secondary micro-regional trade during this period.",

"abstractNote": "With this paper, we aim to bring the history of the rural landscapes and communities of the ancient (‘Classical’) Mediterranean back into the limelight, drawing attention to their contributions to and pivotal roles within the multifaceted structural transformations of the Mediterranean in the first millennium bce. To do so, we focus on two case studies from one particular region that looms large amongst those heavily exploited by ancient colonial powers: the island of Sardinia. In chronological terms, our focus is on the so-called Punic and Roman periods, roughly spanning between the fifth century bce and the fifth century ce. Long overlooked, if not outright dismissed, in conventional accounts of the ancient Mediterranean, the rural communities of Punic-Roman Sardinia were not only vital economic producers, but also formed large and culturally distinct social groups. They actively maintained their own traditions, ways of living and practices in the face of the ruling classes’ disruptive initiatives. Their actions to shape their identity and history resonate closely with the theory of the ‘history of subaltern groups’ formulated in Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks, particularly Notebook 25. We draw upon a semiotic understanding of Gramsci’s notion of subalternity to strengthen archaeology’s ability to foreground the materiality of those communities unaccounted for by history. Our goal is to discuss comparatively the material signs of rural life of Punic and Roman-period Sardinia, to outline an alternative decolonial perspective on the island and to consider its implications for the wider ancient Mediterranean.",

"abstractNote": "Myra’nın liman yerleşimi Andriake’deki Liman Yapıları ve Şarap İşlikleri’nde yapılan kazılarda ele geçen oinophoros grubundan üç adet kabartmalı seramik parçası bu çalışmanın konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi kalıp yapımı kabartmalı seramik gruplarından biri olan oinophoroslar, aynı zamanda “Knidos Kalıp Yapımı Kabartmalı Kapları” olarak da adlandırılmaktadır. Oinophoros grubu seramikleri pelike benzeri amphoralar, yonca ağızlı testiler, pelikeler, lagynoslar, phialeler, pateralar ve insan-hayvan-phallos-grotesk mask şekilli kaplar gibi birçok farklı form barındırmaktadır. Genellikle iki veya daha fazla dişi kalıp kullanılarak üretilen bu kapların bezeme repertuvarında Dionysos kültüyle bağlantılı anlatıların yoğun olarak tercih edildiği görülse de farklı mitolojik olaylar, günlük yaşam, pastoral ve natürmort anlatımlar, araba yarışları ile gladyatör dövüşleri gibi birçok sahne bulunmaktadır. Oinophorosların ilk olarak Augustus Dönemi’nde Knidos’ta üretilmeye başlandığı tespit edilmiştir. Knidos dışında MS 1. yüzyılın ortalarında Pergamon’da, MS 2. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında ise İasos’ta da üretildikleri anlaşılmıştır. Andriake’de ele geçen oinophoros grubu seramikleri phiale/patera ve skyphos olmak üzere iki farklı forma aittir. Bezeme olarak Dionysos kültüyle bağlantılı bağ bozumunda Eros ile natürmort betimler bulunmaktadır. Andriake örnekleri tipolojik analojiye göre MS 1-2. yüzyıla tarihlendirilmiştir. Benzer örnekler, bezeme stili, kil ve astar özellikleri bakımından Andriake oinophoros grubu seramiklerinin Knidos örnekleriyle yakın ilişki içerisinde olduğu görülmektedir. Bu durum oinophoros grubu seramiklerinin Lykia kıyılarındaki dağılımları ve kentler arası ticari bağlantılar hakkında önemli bilgiler sunmaktadır. Ayrıca Myra’nın Andriake limanı aracılığıyla Knidos ile olan ticari bağlantısının hangi yüzyıllarda ne ölçüde olduğuna dair ipuçları barındırmaktadır.",
