Abstract | Paros lies in the center of the Cyclades, right on the busy sea-routes that connect the islands with Crete, East Aegean and the mainland. The island’s long history goes back to the Neolithic period. During the archaic period Paros met its highest economic and cultural peak. It became one of the most powerful Cycladic poleis and founded three colonies, Thasos, Parion (Propontis) and Pharos (Dalmatian Coast). Otto Rubensohn’s pioneer archaeological research in the city of Paroikia in the late 19th century brought to light the remains of the ancient Parian polis. Since then and especially the past 35 years several |

Abstract | "The trajectory of Rome from a small village in Latium vetus, to an emerging power in Italy during the first millennium BC, and finally, the heart of an Empire that sprawled throughout the Mediterranean and much of Europe until the 5th century CE, is well known. Its rise is often presented as inevitable and unstoppable. Yet the factors that contributed to Rome's rise to power are not well understood. Why Rome and not Veii? In this book, Francesca Fulminante offers a fresh approach to this question through the use of a range of methods. Adopting quantitative analyses and a novel network perspective, she focuses on transportation systems in Etruria and Latium Italy from ca. 1000-500 BC. Fulminante reveals the multiple factors that contributed to the emergence and dominance of Rome within these regional networks, and the critical role they in the rise of the city and, ultimately, Roman imperialism"-- |

Abstract | The narrative of Roman history has been largely shaped by the surviving literary sources, augmented in places by material culture. The numerous surviving coins can, however, provide new information on the distant past. This accessible but authoritative guide introduces the student of ancient history to the various ways in which they can help us understand the history of the Roman republic, with fresh insights on early Roman-Italian relations, Roman imperialism, urban politics, constitutional history, the rise of powerful generals and much more. The text is accompanied by over 200 illustrations of coins, with detailed captions, as well as maps and diagrams so that it also functions as a sourcebook of the key coins every student of the period should know. Throughout, it demystifies the more technical aspects of the field of numismatics and ends with a how-to guide for further research for non-specialists. |

Abstract | This is an archaeological report on the forum of the Roman city of Cosa. This forum is the purest example of a republican forum and shows clearly the sequence of planning and building, from the comitium/curia complex and reservoirs, to the conversion of the basilica to a festival hall. |

Abstract | Nearly 20 years on the uninhabited island of Despotiko southwest of Antiparos ago a hitherto unknown sanctuary was identified (Plate 1,1). Excavation on the island continues today still under the direction of Y. Kourayos. From the years 2010 to 2012 a staff of the ‘Lehrstuhl für Baugeschichte’ at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) collaborated in this research;⁴ they concentrated on the most important architectural structures, the North Temenos and the South Complex (Plate 2,1). Further buildings exist outside the main sanctuary, scattered over the nearby hilltop, in direction of the sea (and perhaps a harbour?). The North Temenos includes |

Abstract | The sanctuaries of the island of Paros can be identified thanks to a great deal of different types of evidence. Unlike most Cycladic islands, Paros has not only hosted a number of extensive archaeological excavations, its ancient temples have also been reconstructed from materials recovered from the modern and medieval city that now superimposes the ancient one. To these remains, one can also add archaeological artifacts such as statues, bases of statues, and reliefs that originated in sanctuaries (even if today they cannot be associated with any sanctuary in particular). In addition, inscriptions recovered from several of the island’s constructions, |
