"abstractNote": "This article demonstrates how Nahuas used a precolonial song tradition adapted to early colonial circumstances to relay political beliefs to their leaders. In 1564, a Nahua singer performed the ‘Water pouring song’ at the wedding of the Nahua tlatoani-gobernador of Mexico City, don Luis Cipac. The singer celebrated the lord’s noble lineage but focused primarily on discussions of local politics in the context of the Spanish Empire. The lyrics, found in the Cantares mexicanos manuscript, allow us to hear discussions of contemporary politics and commentaries on an imperial tax newly imposed on the city’s Indigenous population by the Spanish Crown. A close reading of the lyrics, when contextualized with the performance and the events of 1564, reveals a new perspective on Nahua global political awareness by Indigenous residents of Mexico City in the mid-sixteenth century.",

"abstractNote": "The cult of motherhood has a lengthy and complex history in Latin American society. Mothers Making Latin America utilizes a combination of innovative gender scholarship and primary source material to dispel the commonly held belief that women were separated from-or unimportant to-central developments in Latin American history since independence. With scholarly precision, author Erin E. O'Connor also discards the popular notion that the only women worthy of study were those who rejected gender norms in their entirety. Instead, O'Connor explores how ideas about motherhood, and women's own interpretations of that role, were often central to processes of socio-political change in Latin America. Featuring a thought-provoking blend of original scholarship with an accessible narrative thread, Mothers Making Latin America helps to reshape our understanding of Latin American gender history.",

Britt maps the interwoven histories of three of the city of São Paulo’s most iconic ethnoracialized neighborhoods, popularly known as “African” Brasilândia, “Japanese” Liberdade, and “Italian” Bexiga. Following these spaces over the mid-twentieth century through inventive methods of spatial history, archival research, and sustained engagement with African-descendent cultural organizations, Britt shows that these ethnoracialized neighborhoods did not accrue naturally over time. Instead, they were planned, produced, and contested by an array of individuals, from powerful urbanist-politicians and neighborhood businessowners to celebrated samba composers and historic preservationists. The ethnoracialization of these neighborhoods, Britt argues, served paradoxical ends: it reproduced consequential racialized inequities while, simultaneously, bolstering discourses of multicultural harmony. By untangling the paradoxes of ethnoracial space in Brazil’s most populous, diverse, and unequal city, I’ll Samba Someplace Else elucidates how popular ideologies of multiculturalism endure despite persistently high levels of racialized inequity and anti-Black violence in both Brazil and beyond",

"abstractNote": "Who Tells Your Story gathers contemporary analyses of monument and commemoration controversies from across the United States and the world. Sanford Levinson and the contributors in this volume ask whose stories get to be told, who gets to tell them, what happens when monuments disappear, and how these memorials impact national narratives. From the removal of Confederate statutes in the United States and those of Lenin in Ukraine to the efficacy of national holidays in furthering the causes they claim to celebrate, these essays dissect how the collaborative process of memorialization brings purported intention, private agenda, and final outcome into constant friction with each other. Who Tells Your Story is an accessible and provoking examination on public memory and what forces shape it.",

"abstractNote": "The Imperial College of Santa Cruz in Tlatelolco was established in 1536 to provide a humanist education to youths from indigenous elites in the Valley of Mexico. This chapter offers clear evidence to prove that the college was never intended to train a native clergy, but rather followed the precedent of institutions that were founded by the Spaniards in Granada and Hispaniola to train a class of native governors. Nonetheless, the foundation of Santa Cruz provoked controversy in New Spain, and there was some debate among Franciscans about the desirability of training Indians for the priesthood. This chapter also throws new light on the college’s pedagogical objectives, individual instructors and students, books that were used, and on how teaching of the trivium of grammar, rhetoric, and logic was conducted. Chapter 4 consists of the following sections: I. Initial contexts and motives for the Indians’ Latin education; II. Foundation of Santa Cruz: Objectives and controversies; III. Education and the trivium at Santa Cruz, including (i) grammar and Latin expression, (ii) logic and rhetoric; and IV. Conclusions.",

"abstractNote": "The multifaceted development of indigenous language literacy in colonial Central America and in all of Spanish America included the instruction and education of missionary friars and priests as well as indigenous elite youths who would become scribes, choir masters, and parish caretakers in their municipalities. Both indigenous men and European monks and priests would use native languages to create documents using revised Latin letters for the ends of protecting private and community assets or spreading Catholicism. Indigenous scribes would sometimes use Nahuatl as a “vehicular language” to keep notarial documents in lieu of their own native languages. In Central America in the Cuchamatanes Mountains, rather than write in Mam, for example, scribes sometimes wrote in Central American Corrected Nahuatl. The informal education of some Spanish and casta men who conducted business in Central America with indigenous peoples was another facet of indigenous language literacy. They would often serve as witnesses and interpreters in Spanish colonial tribunals translating native testimony and keeping interpreters faithful in their interpretations. They would sometimes read documents in indigenous languages, and would approve of translations into Spanish that indigenous scribes produced. Women would use a traditional weaving literacy to create wearable representations of themselves and their communities within a larger cosmovision. Indigenous language literacy in colonial Central America included indigenous men and women and male European migrants. This entry will contain quotations and terms that have been left in the colonial orthography to emphasize the colonial rather than modern script that scribes and scholars wielded to create documentation.",

"abstractNote": "The pre-Hispanic sign for Mexico-Tenochtitlan, an eagle on a cactus, was transformed in the colonial period into a depiction of an eagle grasping a snake, a common Renaissance emblem that originated in classical antiquity. That transformation illustrates the subject of the present book: the use of European learning to mediate indigenous legacies in sixteenth-century New Spain, largely as a result of the humanist education missionaries provided to native Nahuatl-speaking students. After explaining the title, ‘Aztec Latin’ (and explaining the use of terms such as ‘Aztec’, ‘Mexican’, ‘Latin’, and ‘Renaissance’), the main part of this Introduction outlines the content of each chapter: Chapters 1–5 show how humanism’s most pervasive disciplines and practices—grammar, rhetoric, pedagogy, antiquarianism, scholarly translation—were renovated and redeployed by Franciscan educators in sixteenth-century New Spain; Chapters 6–9 explore the work by native Mexican scholars in Latin, Nahuatl, and Spanish, contextualizing and reassessing their achievements. The final part of this Introduction highlights the broader significance of this study, both for colonial history and the history of scholarship.",

"abstractNote": "Women have been largely absent from the narratives surrounding football fan culture in Brazil. To actively support at stadiums, women regularly face sexism. To challenge this paradigm, they have organised into supporters’ collectives, forging a shared identity and aligning themselves with feminism. In this chapter, we focus on this network of activist fan collectives. Considering this scenario, we rely on the notion of social movements conceived by Della Porta and Diani (2020) to describe and demonstrate the relationships between feminist movements and demands for gender equality and against sexism in the stands. Hence, we triangulated data produced from semi-structured interviews with 37 Brazilian women fans or torcedoras as well as posts on the social networks of this movement. In dialogue with the literature, we present our interpretations in three categories of analysis: feminist identities in the stands, actions against sexism, and the political disputes within this network.",

"abstractNote": "In Brazil, football only began to become known and structured during the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries. At this time, the country already had a well-shaped sports scene that enabled the rapid spread of football across its communities. Sports such as rowing, horse racing, tennis, athletics, swimming, cricket and skating started to grow and become organised in Brazil in the middle of the nineteenth century, especially in Rio de Janeiro, then the country’s largest city and national capital. Later on, when women started to play football, they could then seek inspiration from the early trailblazers who, defying the constraints of their time, pioneered these other sports. Such a feminine presence was marked by a double social dimension: it was a sign that its importance increased during the nineteenth century, but it was also a sign of a new framework from the point of view of the male world, an ambiguity typical of societies that go through processes of adherence to the ideal and imaginary of modernity. In this chapter, we intend to discuss these pioneering female experiences, arguing that understanding these initiatives is relevant to better appreciate the challenges that surrounded the practice of football by women a few decades later.",

"abstractNote": "In this text, we address the sports and biographical trajectory of Marta Vieira, better known simply as Marta, winner of six awards as the best football player in the world. Born in the countryside of a small town in the state of Alagoas, Marta worked hard to seize the opportunities to play for the Brazilian national team and for international teams. Like Marta, there are many other young people who dedicate themselves to sports, but who do not achieve the same projection in a spectacular sports complex. Most Brazilians are unaware of the riches of football that is on the fringes, such as blind football, the indigenous, the high school football, and women’s footballWomen’s football. Marta’s story reflects the need for effective actions to promote changes, whether by Brazilian or international bodies, so that female football players receive financial compensation for their efforts and so that they can carry out solid professionalization projects.",
