He only constructed the first widely known and used mechanism replacing the drawboy by punched cards to feed pattern information into his mechanism. To control a weave means to decide whether a warp thread is to be picked up or not. Weaving has therefore been a binary art from its very beginning, applying operations of pattern algebra for millennia. Jacquard’s cards were the end of this story rather than its beginning, reducing the weaver to an operator who had to step on a single treadle repeatedly. This analysis uncovers the depth and breadth of engagement users have with the deep mapping environment and provides a set of best practices other projects can use to create and sustain public In this personal essay, author Catherine Dunlop reflects on her experience of researching historical attitudes toward France's mistral wind while simultaneously feeling the wind's powerful gusts firsthand. Unsatisfied with the French state's indoor weather archives, Dunlop develops her research project around the outdoor archives that she encounters on a daily basis. Through her sensory experiences of the mistral, both at sea and on land, Dunlop hones her research questions and ultimately deepens her understanding of the mistral's role in modern French history. Even as she acknowledges the benefits that came from her firsthand encounters with the mistral, Dunlop recognizes the fragile and tenuous aspects of place-based historical research. Places like Provence, and their distinctive winds, are changing. The Anthropocene, she argues, will alter historians' ability to connect with and learn from the landscape heritage of the places that they visit. Building narratives of place is becoming increasingly contingent on data landscapes as opposed to the physical landscapes within which they are situated. To make the assumption that GIS can form the basis for deep maps is to privilege the spatial dimension (and spatial data) over all others. We have sought in our experimentation to take a more open, balanced approach as to how a deep map might be organised as a way of learning/reflecting on what elements a framework should contain. It includes nearly every class in Wikidata, resulting in a large, dynamic ontology. Sourced from concepts written about in Wikipedias across a wide variety of languages, Wikidata is arguably the most reliable openly licensed and actively edited knowledge graph in the world, with growing interest in Wikidata reuse by applications like the Blue Core Graph Toolbox, using Large Language Models (LLMs) with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and a vector database created from a sample Library of Congress Bibliographic Framework (BIBFRAME) data to produce more relevant responses for librarians creating and editing Resource Description Framework (RDF) descriptions for library materials. This novel use case highlights the need for more consistent modeling across the Wikidata ontology, and within specific domains of knowledge. The bibliographic domain serves as a case study for surveying the types of ontology issues present in Wikidata. Associated software components such as Leaflet or Google Maps Embed API have become the de facto standard for geographical visualisation in the digital humanities. This article examines how the needs of humanities researchers can inform the design of these web map components’ features. Visual analysis and discovery use cases for web maps are introduced based on the TaDiRAH taxonomy of digital research activities. Visual analysis offers researchers opportunities to gain geographical insights from patterns in humanities data. Yet visual features of web map components such as the Web Mercator projection and background mapping tiles are only appropriate for the analysis of certain regions and scales. A discovery use case is introduced with the aim of using the map to access research objects. The article argues that visual features such as vector representations and popups can be designed to guide the user towards accessing rich content beyond the map. This use case aligns with researchers’ experience of using web map components elsewhere and projects that wish to encourage usage of research objects. Web map components have expedited the process of creating visualisations. Yet their convenience has led to a lack of spatial literacy and critical reflection. The article argues that historical and wider usage should be considered when appropriating any form of visualisation.
