A History of Play:

 

I believe there has been a significant shift in views of play in American culture in recent history. (I don't really know how these differences compare internationally, but would be interested) Here I am discussing play as distinct from leisure, most likely a subset of leisure. What was once the tolerated behavior of children, 'child's play' has become a central theme in modern adult life.

 

When speaking about power tools and fast cars men often refer to them as toys, the average video game player is now 33 the list goes on.

 

I think there are multiple forces involved. One force is contemporary American cultures obsession with youth. As Gary Cross notes, things which were tollerated in children have become venerated as virtues for adults. Another strand involves the transition in psychological thinking on play through the last 150 years. Play now holds educational and psychological value. Another piece is the history of leisure, for adults to be able to play they clearly had to have the time to.
