Such knowledge would allow park managers to evaluate crime risk and opportunity and to formulate response strategies. A case study of auto burglary in Washington, D.C., examined the relationship between park setting and auto burglary. A focus group, extensive on-site interviews with plainclothes police, and analysis of crime sites were used to reveal the scripts and behaviors of auto burglars. The results are consistent with fundamental theories of environmental criminology and suggest that situational features are in fact used by offenders and that offenders adapt their behaviors to the opportunities and risks provided by each setting. The posthumous sanitizing of Einstein is what Freeman Dyson calls “canonization”: “In the process of canonization, when you put someone on a pedestal you don’t call attention to his feet of clay.” Einstein would no doubt have objected to that description of his politics, but Dyson has provided an essential insight: the iconization of Einstein has reduced him from astute social critic to genial, absent-minded professor with his head in the clouds. No waves on this cruise, nothing that might even slightly sway the boat.17 A few of Einstein’s public political stands have made it into corners of his memorials. Alongside the famous Einstein statue at the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, D.C., plaques mention his antinuclear activism after World War II and his challenge to McCarthyism.

ConstitutionAvenue parking is used by tourists visiting theVietnamVeterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, and the Korean War Memorial. In this area, the Einstein Statue, elevated above and situated 100 meters from the western end of Constitution Avenue, serves as a convenient hiding place for resident auto burglars. Concealment is provided on the statue’s north side by mature holly trees and on the south side by a dense mix of shrubs situated between the statue and ConstitutionAvenue (see Figure 2). Informants report they have witnessed resident offenders entering the roomlike interior of the rowof holly trees. The thick vegetation makes it difficult to see in but possible to see out—and to observe potential victims as they park and then walk away. Although some tourists are actually followed by burglars from their cars to determine destination and likely time away from the car, most victims are simply observed from the vegetation at the statue.
