Abstract | This paper focuses on the changes in the titles of university programs about cinema to argue that the approach adopted by the film teaching community is quite different from the one that prevailed until quite recently. The terms cinema and movies often disappear in favour of an ‘extended’ definition: ‘Moving image’ becomes the new creed of universities. Other institutions such as cinémathèques or scholarly associations are too in the midst of a cinematic identity crisis. The paper then analyzes the context of this transformation, the advent of digital, and examines the turmoil it causes. |

Abstract | Cet article est la dernière partie d'un texte dont l'objectif est de comprendre le rôle des travaux de Christian Metz dans l'histoire de la théorie sur le montage, plus précisément en ce qui concerne les figures de l'alternance. Dans la première partie, publiée dans le numéro précédent, les auteurs mettaient en lumière la manière dont Metz (notamment grâce à son tableau de la grande syntagmatique) a levé une part importante de l'ambiguïté qui prévalait dans les définitions de ces figures de montage. Dans cette seconde partie, les auteurs examinent trois problèmes concernant les figures de « type alternant » rencontrés par Metz dans le cadre de son analyse syntagmatique de la bande-images du film Adieu Philippine (Jacques Rozier, 1962). Ces trois problèmes représentent en définitive autant de chantiers auxquels il faudra s'attaquer si l'on désire un jour jeter une lumière nouvelle sur les modalités d'émergence du montage alterné. |

Abstract | Dans ses premiers travaux sémiologiques, Christian Metz s’est penché sur les divers mécanismes du montage cinématographique, ce dont rend bien compte son fameux tableau de la « grande syntagmatique ». Il s’agit dans cet article d’essayer de comprendre le rôle de ces travaux dans l’histoire de la théorie sur le montage, plus précisément en ce qui a trait aux figures de l’alternance (soit, essentiellement, le montage alterné et le montage parallèle). Les auteurs dressent d’abord un portrait de la « situation définitionnelle » des figures de l’alternance dans les écrits de théoriciens ou d’historiens français des années 1950 et du début des années 1960 (dont Étienne et Anne Souriau, Henri Agel, André Bazin et Jean Mitry), pour mettre ensuite en lumière la manière dont les propositions de Metz ont levé une part importante de l’ambiguïté qui prévalait dans la définition de ces figures de montage, ouvrant ainsi la voie à l’écriture d’une histoire renouvelée du montage alterné. |

Abstract | This chapter revisits a model of the “double birth of media.” The expression “the double birth of cinema” refers to, on one hand, the invention between 1890 and 1895 of a device for capturing-restoring moving images—Lumière Cinématographe being the most successful example—and, on the other, the establishment of an institution for producing and exhibiting moving pictures. Cinema, however, cannot be simply reduced to merely projecting photographic images; it is not something one “invents.” There is no cinema patent because cinema is not a technique but rather a social, cultural, and economic system. The justification for the double birth model is its implied refusal of a one-dimensional conception of something as complex as the emergence of a new medium. The chapter argues for a pluralistic view of cinema's birth, one that projects how the history of cinema is a succession of deaths and beginnings. |
