            "abstractNote": "Textbooks are a cornerstone of education, but they have a fundamental limitation: they are a one-size-fits-all medium. Any new material or alternative representation requires arduous human effort, so that textbooks cannot be adapted in a scalable manner. We present an approach for transforming and augmenting textbooks using generative AI, adding layers of multiple representations and personalization while maintaining content integrity and quality. We refer to the system built with this approach as Learn Your Way. We report pedagogical evaluations of the different transformations and augmentations, and present the results of a a randomized control trial, highlighting the advantages of learning with Learn Your Way over regular textbook usage.",

            "abstractNote": "Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) launched Canada&rsquo;s first zero textbook cost (ZTC) program in 2018, aiming to alleviate the financial burden of expensive course materials for students. This initiative has since grown to encompass eight credentials and nearly 800 individual courses from which over 24,000 students have benefited from nearly CA$13 million in cost savings. The present study investigated the multi-year impact of KPU&rsquo;s ZTC initiative on educational outcomes, through an analysis of institutional-level data encompassing 13,605 course sections across the four academic years between September 2018 and August 2022. The study&rsquo;s pre-registered hypotheses posited that ZTC course sections would exhibit either similar or enhanced levels of student course enrolment, persistence, and performance. Multilevel modelling that controlled for both between-course and within-courses sources of variance showed that ZTC course sections exhibited comparable mean fill and withdrawal rates and slightly higher mean GPAs than non-ZTC course sections. The findings of this study hold significant implications for higher education policy and practice, demonstrating that the substantial student cost savings that result from the programmatic adoption of open educational resources (OER) via institutional ZTC initiatives do not come at the cost of educational outcomes. As post-secondary institutions strive to widen equitable access and better support both pedagogical innovation and student success, the adoption and expansion of ZTC initiatives should be considered as a strategic priority. Limitations, practical recommendations, and directions for future research are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper examines pedagogical biases in AI-powered educational tools, focusing specifically on lesson plan generators. We investigate how these tools may implicitly embed outdated educational approaches that limit student agency and classroom dialogue. Through analysis of 90 lesson plans from commercial lesson plan generators, we found that AI-generated content predominantly promotes teacher-centered classrooms with limited opportunities for student choice, goal-setting, and meaningful dialogue. To mitigate this issue, we further experimented with intentional prompt engineering, which showed promise in significantly enhancing these dimensions in AI-generated lesson plans. We offer practical strategies for educators and developers to mitigate harmful pedagogical biases while promoting contemporary educational values. This work contributes to the critical conversation about how AI tools should be designed and used to support, rather than undermine, the future of education that values student agency and productive classroom dialogue.",

            "abstractNote": "This mixed methods study explores 315 distance learning students’ perceptions of artificial intelligence digital assistants (AIDAs) over an 11-month period in three distinct studies. The research investigates student perspectives on both a publicly available AI digital assistant (p-AIDA), such as ChatGPT, and a potential institutionally developed AI digital assistant (i-AIDA). Findings indicate that students highly valued 24/7 immediate academic feedback and the personalisation of the i-AIDA, and these perspectives remained largely stable across the three studies. However, concerns about academic integrity, data privacy, and ethical implications persisted across the studies. A cluster analysis identified three distinct student groups of highly critical, supportive, and keenly supportive learners, with key differences based on prior GenAI experience, educational background, and age. This study underscores both the potential and challenges of developing institutional AI solutions to enhance student learning while addressing privacy and ethical concerns.",

            "abstractNote": "Conflicting results exist in the literature on whether Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) can improve learning performance. Additionally, limited studies, in this context, have attempted to systematically measure and understand this phenomenon. To address this research gap, this study conducts a two-level analysis based on a systematic review of the OER and OEP literature. It first conducts a meta-analysis to measure the effect of OER and OEP on learning performance. It then conducts a meta-synthesis based on the activity theory to understand what led to this effect (measured in the first phase). Specifically, 32 studies (N = 134905 participants) were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. The obtained results revealed that OER and OEP have significant negligible effect (g = 0.10; p < 0.05), which indicates that learners are mostly consumers of knowledge in a very traditional way. Additionally, it is found that the learning process was mainly in formal settings in classrooms using traditional technologies like websites and learning management systems. The findings of this study can help to enhance the effective adoption of OER and OEP by highlighting the confounding variables that should be considered when developing their open education initiatives.",

            "abstractNote": "Although Open Educational Resources (OERs) can help reduce costs and maximize access to instructional materials, academics face significant problems in identifying good OER textbooks. This can be traced, in part, to the low quality of many OER directories. This study evaluated more than 350 potentially relevant resources, identifying 95 multidisciplinary and 23 subject-limited OER directories that include a relatively high proportion of free textbooks rather than other OERs (syllabi, assessment materials, etc.). Comparative information is presented for each of the 118 directories, with special attention to those with high recall, high precision, explicit and meaningful selection criteria, and consistently good textbook quality. The results focus on the characteristics of the OER directories, the extent to which they support the discovery of textbooks, the particular directories that are likely to be most useful, and the ways in which the most useful directories are systematically different from the others. There are at least 24 high-quality OER directories, but three—the Open Textbook Library, the B.C. Open Collection, and LibreTexts Commons—are especially useful. By devoting more attention to directories such as these, we can overcome the greatest barrier to the adoption of OER textbooks—the difficulty of identifying titles that can replace conventional texts.",
