"abstractNote": "Performance metrics inform hiring, promotion, and funding decisions; however, the choice of bibliographic database can substantially influence these outcomes. OpenAlex has emerged as a significant open alternative to proprietary sources; however, its suitability for research evaluation remains uncertain. Existing comparative studies across databases have largely focused on coverage and product-level assessments. In contrast, our work directly compares performance scores and rankings of scholars and institutions across data sources to identify the origins of any discrepancies. We rank the productivity and impact of Italian universities and professors in management engineering using OpenAlex, Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus. Productivity is measured using harmonized document types and author name disambiguation, while impact is derived from year- and field-normalized citations weighted by fractional authorship. We find strong agreement across databases for productivity, but only moderate alignment for impact. OpenAlex displays more heavily right-skewed distributions and greater dispersion, producing higher volatility in scholar and institutional rankings. Median absolute percentile differences are approximately 5–6 points across database pairs, with extremes exceeding 70 points for impact; around 30% of scholars shift at least one quartile when OpenAlex replaces WoS or Scopus. These discrepancies stem primarily from differences in field taxonomies, normalization procedures, and indexing-year conventions. We conclude that although OpenAlex enables open and reproducible analyses, high-stakes evaluations should triangulate multiple data sources and harmonize methodological assumptions in advance to ensure validity and reliability.",

"abstractNote": "Scientific publishing has become a fundamental component of the academic journey. The imperative to publish has been accompanied by the emergence and expansion of an industry that offers a potentially fateful shortcut, promising open access and extremely rapid responses, the so-called predatory journals. Despite warnings about predatory publishers, many researchers still consider them to meet publication requirements. Given the relevance and timeliness of discussions on predatory publishing practices, this study aimed to assess researchers’ perceptions of this phenomenon using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. To this end, a survey was disseminated to Brazilian graduate programs, obtaining 3,067 responses. The study employed a mixed-methods design, combining Pearson’s Chi-square tests for quantitative associations with textual analysis (n-grams and BERTopic modeling) for the open-ended responses. Results indicate that publication pressure significantly associates with experience in predatory publishing (p<0.01). Contrary to expectations, senior researchers showed greater concern regarding publication costs than early-career scholars. Furthermore, federal institutions appeared more vulnerable to predatory practices than state or private institutions. Geographic location did not influence awareness levels, suggesting a homogeneous lack of preparedness across the country. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest study ever conducted in this context, contributing to our understanding of this phenomenon. The conclusions provide a basis for developing more effective public policies and for guiding graduate and research programs to inform their participants about their publication choices.",

"abstractNote": "This report evaluates the structural viability of open bibliographic infrastructures for research assessment purposes, with a particular focus on how leading open databases compare with Scopus in terms of coverage, metadata quality, transparency, interoperability, and suitability for research evaluation workflows.\nWhile recent policy frameworks such as the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) and the Barcelona Declaration mandate a transition toward open research data, an empirical analysis reveals a critical bottleneck: a structural trade-off between scale and metadata standardization. Platforms such as OpenAIRE, which aggregates more than 150 million records, and open bibliographic platforms including OpenAlex and The Lens, each with over 200 million records, significantly surpass the publication volume covered by commercial curated databases, most notably Scopus, across the analyzed 1996–2024 period.\nHowever, this aggregation model prioritizes recall over structural consistency, which can lead to metadata gaps that compromise direct bibliometric application. The massive ingestion capabilities of open platforms are counterbalanced by substantial limitations in key metadata fields. Affiliation data are absent in more than 55% of records, severely constraining the feasibility of institutional evaluations, and key identifiers such as ISSNs and DOIs exhibit significantly lower levels of completeness than in Scopus. Document type classification also frequently lacks editorial rigor, relying heavily on algorithmic labeling that does not consistently standardize the categorization of scholarly outputs.\nFurthermore, the analysis of citation flows reveals a markedly asymmetric dynamic: the expansive long tail of open databases functions primarily as a reference feeder that reinforces the impact indicators of the already established commercial core, rather than substantially redistributing measured impact across the broader scholarly corpus. In this way, the additional literature that open sources seek to incorporate ultimately serves to strengthen the prominence of the publications already represented in commercial databases. This finding points to a structural paradox in open scholarly infrastructures and raises important questions that warrant further reflection and investigation.\nGeographic and editorial analyses reveal persistent asymmetries. Within the Global South, representation trajectories diverge: while regions such as Africa and Latin America have improved their visibility, significant coverage gaps, reaching up to 25%, remain in Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, deficits persist in specialized humanities monographs and complex publication structures like conference proceedings. Consequently, the theoretical advantage of the open \"long tail\" cannot currently be leveraged to offset these geographic and editorial biases, as its source-level metadata remains structurally incomplete or absent.\nThis operational friction stems from a fundamentally bifurcated data reality. Within the core literature that overlaps with Scopus, open infrastructures achieve high metadata completeness in fields essential for research evaluation. However, the extended literature outside this overlapping core suffers from profound structural deficiencies, including empty essential fields, duplication, and incomplete source data. \nThe corpus derived from Scopus's editorial processes exhibits a structural consistency without a direct equivalent in open platforms. While all databases utilize normalization methods, open infrastructures depend intensively on algorithmic procedures which are notably prominent in OpenAlex. Conversely, Scopus integrates automated processes with author and institutional feedback to refine data disambiguation. Although the data indicates that Scopus captures a higher number of affiliations per document, this study does not include an empirical comparison regarding the effectiveness of their respective disambiguation systems.\nConversely, open platforms face significant structural trade-offs: The Lens struggles with global metadata standardization, reporting the lowest global rates of ISSN and DOI presence and a 71.67% deficit in capturing conference proceedings. OpenAlex relies heavily on unstructured source data, with 41.5% of its records (having a source) lacking an ISSN, and faces potential analytical bias due to algorithmic over-labeling of documents as \"articles\". Finally, OpenAIRE presents important technical anomalies, including over one million duplicated DOIs and the highest rate of unclassified documents (23.1%) within the curated core, resulting in the lowest overall citation impact ratio of the group.\nDespite the structural limitations observed in their extended corpora, open bibliographic infrastructures present advantages when applied to targeted use cases. The Lens, with over 215 million records, integrates scholarly outputs with patent data, making it highly effective for mapping technology transfer while maintaining a 96.1% citable document density within its core overlap. OpenAlex demonstrates the highest absolute alignment with commercial standards by capturing 63.8 million Scopus-indexed records and highest citation density in that core among the three open databases. Finally, OpenAIRE offers the highest coverage of persistent identifiers (73.2% for DOIs and 59.7% for ISSNs) and the lowest rate of missing institutional affiliations (40.55%) among the open platforms. \nThe high structural availability of open data must not be uniformly equated with evaluative viability. Uncritical adoption of the full open dataset in its raw state risks introducing new, systemic biases into the global science policy landscape, imposing significant methodological compromises. Nevertheless, these infrastructures have evolved considerably. While direct aggregation currently complicates standard institutional evaluation, these platforms can deliver highly functional solutions for specialized bibliometric analyses, provided that institutions commit to investing in rigorous data normalization and disambiguation processes. Consequently, the transition toward open research assessment requires a technical shift from mere data accessibility to active data validation.",

We find a sharp rise in non-existent references following widespread LLM adoption, with a conservative estimate of 146,932 hallucinated citations in 2025 alone. These errors are diffusely embedded across many papers but especially pronounced in fields with rapid AI uptake, in manuscripts with linguistic signatures of AI-assisted writing, and among small and early-career author teams. At the same time, hallucinated references disproportionately assign credit to already prominent and male scholars, suggesting that LLM-generated errors may reinforce existing inequities in scientific recognition. Preprint moderation and journal publication processes capture only a fraction of these errors, suggesting that the spread of hallucinated content has outpaced existing safeguards. Together, these findings demonstrate that LLM hallucinations are infiltrating knowledge production at scale, threatening both the reliability and equity of future scientific discovery as human and AI systems draw on the existing literature.",

"abstractNote": "OpenAlex is an open bibliographic database that has been proposed as an alternative to commercial platforms in a context defined by the aim of transforming science evaluation systems into more transparent sources based on open data. This paper analyses its features, information sources, entities, advantages and limitations. The results reveal numerous records lacking abstracts, affiliations and references; deficiencies in identifying document types and languages; and issues with authority control and versioning. Although OpenAlex has been adopted in important initiatives and has yielded results comparable to those obtained with commercial databases, gaps in its metadata and a lack of consistency point to a need for intensive data cleaning, suggesting it should be used with caution. The study concludes by identifying three lines of action to improve data quality: increasing publishers’ commitment to completing metadata in primary sources; creating coordination structures to channel the contributions of institutional users; and endowing the project with sufficient human resources and reliable procedures to address internal quality control tasks and user support requests.",

One will briefly outline what should informetrics laws be, then one will define what is in our sense duality and statistic information field. Simple mathematical milestones will be given. The study relies on data gathered in libraries, in a document supplier, on a Web site visits. These data allow to formalize and modelize processes of information use and production . Thus, these data lead to define the concept of informetric field of use and production, with help of mathematics.",

"abstractNote": "Clarivate's Web of Science (WoS) and Elsevier's Scopus have been for decades the main sources of bibliometric information. Although highly curated, these closed, proprietary databases are largely biased toward English-language publications, underestimating the use of other languages in research dissemination. Launched in 2022, OpenAlex promised comprehensive, inclusive, and open-source research information. While already in use by scholars and research institutions, the quality of its metadata is currently still being assessed. This paper contributes to this literature by assessing the completeness and accuracy of OpenAlex's metadata related to language, through a comparison with WoS, as well as an in-depth manual validation of a sample of 6836 articles. Results show that OpenAlex exhibits a far more balanced linguistic coverage than WoS. However, language metadata are not always accurate, which leads OpenAlex to overestimate the place of English while underestimating that of other languages. If used critically, OpenAlex can provide comprehensive and representative analyses of languages used for scholarly publishing, but more work is needed at infrastructural level to ensure the quality of metadata on language.",
