The pushback in the comments is telling. Arguing for their culture of connection v others arguing for their culture of distraction.
\nJun 1 2012: I'd like to hear what Sherry's daughter feels about this. I am also 20, and as such I am part of the first generation to have grown up with computers. I grew up in an entirely different way than Sherry and those of all previous generations, and for some reason they continue to categorize us as lonely, isolated, and devoid of the skills and experiences to form 'proper' relationships in the 'real world'.
I feel like the fact that they are so blatantly ignoring is that the internet is a part of the 'real world' for me and many others of our generation. I owe so many of my deepest and longest relationships to technology and social media. I recently moved across the country and met my now best friend through a craigslist room-mate ad. We had 6000 miles between us, but started corresponding via email, then skype and facebook and when we both moved to the new city, we already had a history and friendship that flourished in person.
There are also people with whom I've known only fleetingly in real life whom I've been able to connect with even more deeply because we were given the opportunity by technology to stay in touch. There are friends that I've made online that I've known for years and trust and know deeply, through conversations via email, video chat, call, text, and in-person.
People still want to develop relationships, that's an inherent fact of humanity. I wish I could show Mrs. Turkle and all those who a weary of the social development of my and all subsequent generations is not diminished by technology. It is too subjective even to say that it is better or worse, what needs to be understood is simply that it is a different experience.
Classic example of analog v digital. What makes this better than a moleskine? Where I would tape the ticket for the concert into my moleskine instead I would take a photo. How does this make our lives different?
