The Light Matrix is a gestural interface which is compiled of LEDs. The LEDs are used for both the of sensing light and emitting light for optical feedback. Pak believes that a greater sense of control can be achieved with the gestural movements of hands. This ideal is a combination of previous systems discussed:a virtual gestural systems that claims to have more expressivity then other NIMEs. In comparison to The Plank system, The Light Matrix allows for greater control and engagement with the instrument.

Music via Motion(MvM) is a dance based interface for the live control of sound. Trans-Domain Mapping(TDM) is introduced. This is a framework which is used to utilize the activities of a creative domain and apply them to another ie. dance and music. The relevance of this in relation to our topic is that the system is focused on the action of dancing not the skill of the performer. That being said, a major influence of the interface was the Theremin because the skill involved in using the interface is solely based on practice and not the previous knowledge of the user.

We present a system that allows users to create harmonic melodies without being in need of a previous training period. Our software solution enables users to control melodies by the interaction, utilizing a novel technique of algorithmic composition based on soft constraints. The proposed algorithm does not generate music randomly, but makes sure that the interactive music is perceived as harmonic at any time. The Vodhran is a virtual representation of the traditional Irish percussion instrument, the Bodhran. To begin the design approach they first analyzed how the Bodhran was played. Motion tracking devices were attached to both hands to interpret movements while performing. The sound model for the system was then developed around this performance analysis. Experienced Bodhran players were introduced to the system to test its difficulty and sense of realism. All confirmed that the system was realistic in the sense that the system resembled the actual instrument(only without haptic feedback). The lack of haptic feedback allows users to have a realistic simulation of playing a Bodhran without the knowledge of proper technique.

The Plank is a tabletop interface which is designed with the focus of haptics in novel instruments. This project explores the involvement of the user by incorporating haptic feedback. A goal of the interface was to in some way simulate the 'feel' of a traditional instrument by allowing the performer to manipulate the audio precisely and quickly using their hands. The use of ones hands is somewhat overlooked in the NIME community as many approaches look at virtual, novels ways of controlling sound. This instrument would be considered a very basic interface as it acts on one axis, thus the cost of entry is very low.

This paper discusses the augmentation of the Djembe drum, which is a traditional African drum. The way in which the drum was augmented was with the use of a This paper discusses the augmentation of the Djembe drum, which is a traditional African drum. This was achieved by using webcams and tracking the movement of the players hands. To create a mapping strategy, they analysed an experienced performer and developed an new style of playing based on the system. This is interesting as the sound model and mapping is based on how the drum is played normally and extending that technique. Users with different levels of skill and musical background were chosen to test the systems 'playability'. There is a certain degree of practice involved in playing the 'augmented' version, but users tended to adapt to this with ease.

The focus of this paper is the designing of a gesture tracking interface aimed for members of the public. The main consideration when designing this system is that all the users are presumed to lack in both musical knowledge and awareness of gesture based interfaces. So, the DIYSE(do it yourself smart experience) Music Creation Tool was made. It is made specifically for people who have ILD to help make music easy to learn, comprehend and adopt to. A prototype was made utilizing the 'Guitar Hero' and 'Wii' controllers and applying them to a GUI in Max/MSP. Through user testing and evaluation an efficient system was created.

DIYSE(do it yourself smart experience) Music Creation Tool is an interface designed for those who suffer from Intellectual Learning Disabilities. The interesting aspect about this design approach is that it targets a group of users that would not normally be considered when designing a novel instrument. Because of their disability, learning such instruments(especially traditional instruments) is a difficult task. Considering the system was to be kept as simple as possible, it was decided to utilize existing controllers that users would be familiar with and possibly be somewhat competent in. The 'Guitar Hero' and 'Wii' controllers were chosen to be re-mediated.
