This article discusses the long search to improve training for instruction librarians, and offers in-house training as an option to make improvements. The authors note the lack of training in library schools (and possible explanations for its absence in curricula), and arent optimistic about LIS programs changing to include instruction training. This means that library administrators must take on the responsibility and provide adequate in-house training in order to "avoid horror in the classroom." Authors identify proficiencies needed to be an effective instructor, and reference a survey that studied where these skills are learned and should be learned. Authors note that trainers must possess certain qualities, and that team-training has proved effective since not all instructors possess all of these necessary qualities. Time frame of training is also important, as "training should be held at the time of trainee's need," but too often training is either too early or too late to be effective. The article goes on to identify three in-house training programs that exist, and also identifies resources for those interested in setting up an in-house training program.
This article, although out of date, offers some insight into the state of in-house training programs at the time, and many of the points made are still relevant today. (lack of training in lis programs, some resources listed are still around, etc.)
