The ISEAL Alliance is the global association for sustainability standards.

Founded in 2002 by a group of pioneering sustainability standards, the ISEAL Alliance is a young and dynamic organisation with an influential global reach. Our vision is for a world where social justice and environmental sustainability are the normal conditions of business. We believe credible standards can help to make this vision a reality.

We work with established and emerging sustainability standards in sectors as diverse as agriculture, fishing, carbon, waterand more, to develop guidance and deliver programmes that strengthen their social and environmental impacts. We reach out to governments and businesses which use or are considering using credible standards, to share learning and promote standards as effective tools for meeting sustainability targets.

We develop guidance and facilitate coordinated efforts to improve the effectiveness of sustainability standards and scale up their social and environmental impacts.

\n

We work with our members to define good practice for developing and increasing the impact of sustainability standards. OurCodes of Good Practice, which full members must meet, promote fair and transparent ways of working. Through our different programmes, we explore ways to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of standard systems and identify opportunities forscaling up and collaboration.

\n

We define what makes a standard credible and promote learning between established and emerging standard systems. This includes sharing experience and knowledge about how standards monitor and evaluate their impact, identifying trends in the standards movement and exploring ways to increase small producers’ access to certification.

\n

Working with governments and business, we promote standards as crucial tools to meet sustainability targets. We facilitate discussion about new and creative solutions to the challenges of purchasing sustainably sourced products and through our growing community of standard setters, business, governments, researchers and NGOs, we provide opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange. Taking this to the next level, our work in emerging economies sets out to explore how standards can be used to address sustainability issues in Brazil, India and China.

In short, everything we do is underpinned by our belief that products and services should be created and delivered in a sustainable way; credible standards can make this a reality. Through our work we strive to increase the uptake and impact of sustainability standards on a global scale.

ISEAL is governed by a Board of Directors that is supported by sub committees.

\n

ISEAL is overseen by a Board of Directors that consists of representatives from our full member organisations. The Board guides the strategic direction of ISEAL’s work and provides approval for ISEAL’s strategic plans, business plans, annual work plans and large-scale projects.

\n

The ISEAL Stakeholder Council is an advisory body to the ISEAL Board. Bringing together influential leaders from business, government and civil society, the Stakeholder Council advises the board on trends and issues in the sustainability standards landscape and particularly related to the users of sustainability standards. They also make recommendations to the Board on how ISEAL’s Codes of Good Practice could be further developed and used.

The Membership Committee and Finance Committee make recommendations to the Board about the financial management of ISEAL and issues concerning ISEAL’s membership.

The ISEAL Stakeholder Council is an advisory body to the ISEAL Board of Directors.
\n

Our Stakeholder Council was formed in 2010 with the aim of incorporating the voices and ideas of people that use credible standards into the development of our Codes of Good Practice and strategic planning. We believe that by responding to both the users of sustainability standards as well as those that set them (our members), change can be driven in both directions.

\n

The Stakeholder Council brings together influential leaders from business, government and civil society. Their individual knowledge of the sectors they work in enables ISEAL to gain a broader perspective of how existing and new credibility tools are adopted. Stakeholder Council members also act as ambassadors for ISEAL’s work and promote the uptake of credible standards within their own communities.
