"abstractNote": "Are campaigns for different offices isolated events, or do candidates observe and learn from each other? For example, when choosing which issues to emphasize, do candidates focus solely on their own strengths and their constituents’ desires, or do they emulate one another? The answers to these and other related questions have important implications for the genesis of the national policy agenda. To address these questions, we study the diffusion of issues across gubernatorial and senatorial campaigns in the general election of 2002. We find that candidates do learn, emulating other successful candidates, and that candidates learn more from copartisans and from those whose constituencies are ideologically similar. Moreover, we show that experimentation with new issues begins with risk-taking newcomers, followed by successful issues eventually spreading to the campaigns of entrenched incumbents. These results suggest that the national policy agenda is built from the bottom up, with new ideas attracting institutional support based on their proven electoral success.",

"abstractNote": "Little is known about the evolution of electoral sentiment over the campaign cycle. How does the outcome come into focus as the election cycle evolves? Do voters' preferences evolve in a patterned and understandable way? What role does the election campaign play? In this article, we address these issues. We translate general arguments about the role of campaigns into a set of formal, statistical expectations. Then, we outline an empirical analysis and examine poll results for the 15 U.S. presidential elections between 1944 and 2000. Our analysis focuses specifically on two questions. First, to what extent does the observable variation in aggregate poll results represent real movement in electoral preferences (if the election were held the day of the poll) as opposed to mere survey error? Second, to the extent polls register true movement of preferences owing to the shocks of campaign events, do the effects last or do they decay? Answers to these questions tell us whether and the extent to which campaign events have effects on preferences and, if so, whether these effects persist until Election Day. The answers thus inform us about what we ultimately want to know: Do campaigns have any real impact on the election outcome? The results of our analysis suggest that they do.",

"abstractNote": "Manipulation of dimensions, a heresthetic strategy advanced by Riker (1986), is described as a deterministic strategy. The dimensions of a political decision, once established, cannot be ignored. This article explores conceptually the factors that might make it impossible to ignore new or fixed dimensions. Two factors, the existence of an audience that could be persuaded to accept the dimension as relevant and the beliefs of manipulated actors about the audience, are claimed to play an important role in effective manipulation. Potential changes in the audience's support or opposition are the factors the manipulator seeks to affect by controlling the dimensions under consideration. Persuasion thus may play a role in manipulation of dimensions, both by facilitating a change in audience opinion and by influencing other actors' perceptions of audience opinion. Riker's central claim, however, that manipulation of dimensions as a form of heresthetic is distinct from persuasion is supported.",

"abstractNote": "In the context of a “beauty-contest” coordination game (in which pay-offs depend on the quadratic distance of actions from an unobserved state variable and from the average action), players choose how much costly attention to pay to various informative signals. Each signal has an underlying accuracy (how precisely it identifies the state) and a clarity (how easy it is to understand). The unique linear equilibrium has interesting properties: the signals which receive attention are the clearest available, even if they have poor underlying accuracy; the number of signals observed falls as the complementarity of players' actions rises; and, if actions are more complementary, the information endogenously acquired in equilibrium is more public in nature. The consequences of “rational-inattention” constraints on information transmission and processing are also studied.",

"abstractNote": "In this article, a two-party contest where candidates allocate their campaign resources strategically between two salient issues is studied. The analysis aims to determine the circumstances under which there is issue convergence (both parties emphasizing the same issue) or issue divergence (different parties emphasizing different issues) during a political campaign. For this purpose, the concepts of a party’s absolute and comparative advantage are used. A party has an absolute advantage on an issue if a majority of voters prefer its position on this issue to that of its opponent. A party has a comparative advantage on an issue if the percentage of votes that it would obtain if voters cared only about that issue is larger than those that it would obtain if voters cared only about the other issue. It is shown here that issue convergence can occur only if one of the parties has an absolute advantage on both issues, but its comparative advantage is not too large. Otherwise, there will be issue divergence in the political campaign.",

"abstractNote": "Politics must tackle multiple issues at once. In a first-best world, political competition constrains parties to prioritize issues according to the voters' true concerns. In the real world, the opposite also happens: parties manipulate voter priorities by emphasizing issues selectively during the political campaign. This phenomenon, known as priming, should allow parties to pay less attention to the issues that they intend to mute. We develop a model of endogenous issue ownership in which two vote-seeking parties (i) invest to attract voters with \"better\" policy proposals and (ii) choose a communication campaign to focus voter attention on specific issues. We identify novel feedbacks between communication and investment. In particular, we find that stronger priming effects can backfire by constraining parties to invest more resources in all issues, including the ones they would otherwise intend to mute. We also identify under which conditions parties prefer to focus on their \"historical issues\" or to engage in issue stealing. Typically, the latter happens when priming effects are strong, and historical reputations differentiates parties less.",

"abstractNote": "The non-existence of equilibria in models of electoral competition involving multiple issues is one of the more puzzling results in political economics. In this paper, we relax the standard assumption that parties act as expected utility maximizers. We show that equilibria often exist when parties with limited knowledge about the electorate are modeled as uncertainty-averse. What is more, these equilibria can be characterized as a straightforward generalization of the classical median voter result.",

"abstractNote": "studies repeated communication regarding a multidimensional collective decision in a large population. When preferences coincide but beliefs about the consequences of the various decisions diverge, it is shown, under some specific assumptions, that public communication causes the disagreement between beliefs either to vanish or to become one-dimensional at the limit. Multidimensional disagreement allows indeed for many directions of communication, including some which are orthogonal to the conflict, along which agents can communicate credibly. The possible convergence towards a one-dimensional conflict where no further communication takes place may be related to the empirically observed geometry of the political conflict in many countries.",
