“2012 Doomsdays: Stigmatized Knowledge, Extraterrestrials, and the Varieties of Vernacular Eschatology”

Beliefs about the apocalyptic destruction and millenarian redemption of the world are an ancient and enduring aspect of religious expression that have been continually updated and transformed in response to current contexts and issues of ultimate concern. With the development of new communication technologies and the Internet, recent millennialist belief systems have been characterized as an increasingly eclectic bricolage of ideas that often originate in a cultic milieu of conspiracy theories and stigmatized knowledge. This paper examines the seemingly improvisational aspects of eschatological beliefs associated with the year 2012, contextualizing such ideas in terms of previous millennialist worldviews, apocalyptic fears, metaphysical traditions, and vernacular religious beliefs. Particular focus is given to widespread ideas about the apocalyptic or redemptive role of flying saucers and extraterrestrials central to much 2012 belief, as related to New Age spiritualities, UFO religions, and a variety of other discourses that have influenced 2012 speculation (ancient astronaut theories, the return of the Elohim, the Nephilim, the Annunaki, Quetzalcoatl, et al.). The features and appeal of such ideas are analyzed in terms of the established category of catastrophic millennialism (premillennialism), and also as expressions of avertive apocalypticism and progressive millennialism, distinctive types of eschatological thought that have received less scholarly attention but that are characteristic of much 2012 prophecy belief.
