"abstractNote": "In this paper, a mathematical model to capture information about learning capabilities of students for reusing across didactical units is presented. The model is based on the definition of a set of generic objectives related to the concepts, skills and attitudes the student is expected to assimilate by the end of a unit. Each objective is represented as an axis in a n-dimensional mathematical space. A relationship is established between the topics and each of the objectives. The grading process is modified to reflect how the student performs with respect to these objectives. The expected and obtained grades are then represented in this mathematical space. The proposed model provides support for diagnostics, facilitates the course characterization and comparison (even adaptive ones) and is suitable to be adopted in both new and on-going courses, because requires only the definition of the relationship between topics, evaluation and objectives.",

"abstractNote": "Automatic assessment has become an important technique to reduce the grading load on teaching staff while providing an exhaustive evaluation environment for students. Several systems have evolved over the years providing sophisticated evaluation capabilities. However, fully automated assessment covers only a portion of the overall evaluation requirements in a typical Computer Science course. In this paper we present a tool for automatic assignment management that aims at satisfying several objectives. First, to support the large variety of assignment types and grading policies under the same paradigm by means of a phgeneric architecture. Second, to provide a phmulti-agent, scalable platform to cope with large enrollment classes. And third, to provide phfull connectivity with other administrative tools already present in educational institutions.",

Parametric exercises allow\nfor multiple invocations of an exercise with different data, complexity,\nformulation, etc. An exercise instance is sent to the student, the\nanswers are processed, feedback is returned and a set of values are\nannotated. A graph is defined to interconnect these exercises. Edges\nin this graph are labeled so that exercise sequencing is performed\nbased on previously annotated values. This graph is created by a\ntutor or designer and defines a hierarchical structure that allows\nexercises to be organized and connected at different levels much the\nsame as how material is organized in a course. The work aims\nat filling the gap between generic course delivery tools with barely\nno support for automatic tutoring and sophisticated tutoring systems\nwhich are either too specific or too complex for the manage. The\nsystem has been deployed in a first year computer architecture course\nwith very positive preliminary results.",

"abstractNote": "Peer review has been widely used in multiple contexts ranging from childhood education to academic research. Numerous documents describe different aspects of the reviewing process. Interestingly, barely any discussion is found about how to better match peer assessors and assesses. In this paper an application of peer review in an educational environment is presented. In such context, it is considered as a pedagogical tool to improve the overall learning experience. It is shown that by carefully assigning reviewers to authors, peer review can be oriented to maximize the benefits of the process. Normally, the mapping between authors and reviewers is simplified to a blinded, random association. The proposed adaptive strategy suggests an effective method for assigning reviewers and authors depending on user profiles and based on fuzzy classification techniques. The strategy requires a set of prototypes (typical author-reviewer pairs) and a set of corresponding weights specifying the interest of each prototype. Genetic algorithms are used to obtain a solution to optimize the assignments of reviewers to authors.",

"abstractNote": "In the context of Intelligent Tutoring Systems, there is a potential for adapting either content or its sequence to student as to enhance the learning experience. Recent theories propose the use of team-working environments to improve even further this experience. In this paper an effective matching algorithm is presented in the context of peer reviewing applied to an educational setting. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem to search a solution that satisfies a set of given criteria modeled as “profiles”. These profiles represent regions of the solution space to be either favored or avoided when searching for a solution. The proposed technique was deployed in a first semester computer engineering course and proved to be both effective and well received by the students.",

"abstractNote": "Automatic assessment of laboratory assignments is a powerful technique to improve how students understand the body of knowledge of conventional information technology courses. Also, teaching techniques such as competitive programming, games and puzzles motivate students and increase their probability of becoming successful learners. In this paper a set of assignments that combine automatic assessment and competitive programming is presented in the context of a course on operating systems. Aside from the theory sessions, students are required to write C programs. A set of assessments is given, each of them with a clearly stated performance criteria. Upon arrival, all submissions are automatically processed and ranked depending on their performance. A web page is regularly updated with the ranked submissions plus additional remarks on how to improve them. Empirical results show that students make several submissions for each assignment to first achieve a correct solution and then gradually obtain performance improvements.",

"abstractNote": "Using a team-work, project-based methodology is a common approach when teaching Artificial Intelligence. However, a major drawback of such approach is that AI courses comprise a wide syllabus composed of quite independent topics. In consequence, students focus on one single topic from the entire course contents: although deep learning of such topic is probably ensured, learning of the rest of the contents is also probably much more superficial. In this paper, peer review is proposed as a complement to project-based learning. Students work not only on their project about a chosen topic, but also review peers' projects on distinct topics, providing them with a wider comprehension of the global syllabus of the course. Empirical results of the application of this approach to an actual course on Artificial Intelligence for senior students in Telecommunication Engineering are presented too. Analysis focuses on the effects of the reviewing task, as it is the one which broadens students learning. Positive results have been achieved, thus validating the interest of peer review as a useful instrument for learning improvement",

"abstractNote": "A web-based intelligent tutoring system with some swarm intelligence capabilities is presented. It is based on a former one which led to good results in experiments with real students. Adaptation to the students, necessary for a more efective learning experience is achieved through two means: the use of sequencing graphs and swarm intelligence techniques. Sequencing graphs determine which paths are available for the students. Succesful paths traversed by students are reinforced in the graph. This information is presented to the students every time they finish a learning unit, so they can choose next units with some information about how their peers did perform in the same situation. The mechanisms of stigmergy will lead to the appearance of optimum learning paths.",

One approach is to model the set of possible sequencings with a graph, but the process of designing and maintaining the graph may be tedious and error-prone. This paper presents some ideas to overcome this, inpired by swarm intelligence techniques. Problems that may arise, as well as possible solutions, are presented.",

The language is capable of capturing a wide range of pedagogic strategies facilitating course deployment, distribution and resource reuse. This paper presents the experience of capturing the structure of a regular course part of a degree in a higher educational institution using Learning Design. The course has a set of sessions and topics that run in parallel. Students work in small projects during a week while, in parallel, theory sessions are being held. Students exchange information among themselves and with the tutors about the projects through forums specifically created for it. Due to the highly parallel set of activities in the course, the organization of the course in acts was abandoned in favor of purely activity structure based paradigm.",

Such flow description for a course,\ncalled a Unit of Learning, must be able to be reproduced in different systems using a so called run-time\nenvironment. In the last few years there has been several tools implementing such functionality, but\nmost of them are standalone and do not benefit from the integration with a Learning Management\nSystem. This paper describes GRAIL, an IMS Learning Design run-time environment supporting all\nthree levels of the specification and fully integrated with the .LRN Learning Management System. The\npaper describes its functionality, explains how each level is implemented, shows the differences with\nother CopperCore based environments, and analyzes its integration with the rest of .LRN services and\nother specifications such as QTI and SCORM.",

This document describes a pedagogical model enhanced for effectively providing courses to a large number of students and producing media-rich content suitable to be managed by the open-source e-learning platform .LRN. Two case studies are presented: 1) a course for high school students to increase the popularity of engineering degrees; and 2) a regular engineering course with a blended learning approach. In both cases the proposed paradigm allowed the creation of successful learning experiences impossible with conventional teaching methodologies and tools.",

E-learning is a means of taking education even further reducing the space-temporal barriers in its access. In this process costs should be kept to a minimum. The open-source model is key to keeping costs down. This paper presents the results achieved obtained using open-source e-learning applications inside the E-LANE project. In addition of using an open-source Learning Management System and enhancing it by supporting open standards, a content production methodology has been developed. The resulting system has been deployed in real experiences throughout Latin America.",
