interplay between patients’ attachment style and their ability to create, remember, and use benignly influential representations of their experiences with their therapists. We focused on 2 interrelated questions: Are there significant attachment‐related differences in the thematic content of the remembrances and fantasies that patients have about therapy? And, if so, what are the implications for practice? Results of a study of individuals currently in therapy (N = 176) indicated that although all the patients with different insecure attachment styles struggled to evoke positively valenced therapist representations, the specific nature of their representational patterns varied as a function of specific attachment styles. We offer several clinical strategies that may increase insecure patients’ abilities to form adaptive representations of their therapist and therapy. Seventy-five clients who were currently in therapy at a large university counseling center participated in the current study. Multilevel regression analyses demonstrated that alliance and clients' perceptions of their therapists' use of PI techniques were positively associated with clients' general thoughts about therapy between sessions. Also, stronger alliances were associated with more therapeutic activities between sessions and more positive (and less negative) thoughts about therapy between sessions. In addition, clients at later sessions who described their therapists as using more PI techniques also reported engaging in more therapeutic activities between sessions (after controlling for the variance in the other variables, such as use of CB techniques). Clients' perceptions of their therapists' use of CB techniques in the most recent session were not related to thinking about therapy or therapeutic activities after controlling for the variance in the other variables. sessions with their therapists, but these \"intersession processes\" (ISP) have been largely neglected in psychotherapy research. This study presents a German version of the Intersession Experience Questionnaire (IEQ, Orlinsky et al. ) called the Inter-Session-Fragebogen (ISF). The ISF was used to study a total of 3.778 intersession intervals in 249 therapy episodes involving 229 patients. The factor structure of the ISF appears to be stable over therapy (up to 25 or even 50 sessions), and also over therapy settings (outpatient, day clinic, inpatient). Just as in the original American samples, there were evidently cross-culturally invariant factors like \"Recreating the therapeutic situation\", \"Applying therapy,\" and \"Relationship fantasies\". It is important to identify patients at risk for failure early in the treatment process. Eighty-five consecutively admitted inpatients (DSM IV) were treated with an integrative approach including a treatment contract. Failure at discharge was defined as leaving with a BMI of less than 17.5 kg/m² or gaining <2 kg/m² in weight. Statistical analysis consisted of growth curve analysis, methods of regression with optimal scaling and ROC-curves. Twenty percent of patients were rated as 'failures'. Parameters of weight curves of week 3 and 4 predicted outcome at an effectiveness of p = 0.84. Thirty percent of the patients were classified as 'at-risk-of-failure' and 82.4% of these were identified correctly. Known predictors of the long term course did not predict outcome status at discharge. Characteristics of the weight gain curve (first four weeks of treatment) allowed identification of a substantial proportion of patients at risk for failure. Results indicated that clients in the beginning phase of therapy were less likely to employ representations in the service of continuing the therapeutic dialogue in-between sessions, and less likely to use representations to relieve the pain associated with missing the therapist during separations than clients who have been in therapy for more than one year. Results indicated that in the context of a good therapeutic relationship, clients' internal representations combined auditory, visual, and kinesthetic (i.e., felt presence) modalities; were triggered when clients thought about past or future sessions, or when distressed; occurred in diverse locations; and varied in frequency, duration, and intensity. Clients felt positively about their representations and used them to introspect or influence therapy within sessions, beyond sessions, or both. The frequency of, comfort with, and use of clients' internal representations increased over the course of therapy, and the representations benefited the therapy and therapeutic relationship. explore if process aspects of the first 12 individual psychotherapy sessions of anorexic patients (6 weeks of treatment) are associated with a good or bad outcome at discharge. MethodN = 38 patients with anorexia nervosa (DSM-IV) were treated in a multimodal setting. Process measures were available from the perspectives of both patients and therapists for N = 344 sessions. Results79% of the successful patients (discharge BMI > 17.5) and 68% of the failures could be correctly identified by process variables measured in the initial treatment phase. Patients' experience of negative emotions re therapy between sessions was associated with a bad outcome, whereas a frequent and intense process of ærecreating the therapeutic dialogueÆ was found to be associated with a good outcome. Early therapeutic interventions with a focus on symptoms and interpersonal relationships were related to a positive outcome, whereas a focus on self-concept was related to a bad outcome. This study explores the frequency of therapists' thoughts and feelings about their patients between sessions (intersession experiences) and the relation of these to therapists' professional and demographic characteristics, difficulties experienced and coping strategies used in practice, and personal quality of life. Therapists (N=1,040) from the United States, Canada, and New Zealand completed the Therapist Intersession Experience Scale included in a survey with the Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionnaire (Orlinsky & Ronnestad, 2005). Controlling for nationality, analyses showed that frequency of intersession experiences was associated most strongly with therapists' general level of difficulties in practice (10.3% of variance), use of constructive coping strategies (3.4%), and a few professional characteristics (3.9% combined). This study presents a German version of the Intersession Experience Questionnaire (IEQ, Orlinsky et al. ) called the Inter-Session-Fragebogen (ISF). The ISF was used to study a total of 3.778 intersession intervals in 249 therapy episodes involving 229 patients. The factor structure of the ISF appears to be stable over therapy (up to 25 or even 50 sessions), and also over therapy settings (outpatient, day clinic, inpatient). Just as in the original American samples, there were evidently cross-culturally invariant factors like \"Recreating the therapeutic situation\", \"Applying therapy,\" and \"Relationship fantasies\".
