The system is based on the idea of utilizing QR codes (two-dimensional barcode) affixed to an object and scanned using a camera phone equipped with QR reader software. The reader decodes the barcode to a URL and directs the phone’s browser to fetch an audio file from the Web that contains a verbal description of the object. Our proposed system is expected to be useful in real-time interaction with different environments and to further illustrate the potential of our work, two scenarios are presented.",

"abstractNote": "Blind people face a number of challenges when interacting with their environments because so much information is encoded visually. Text is pervasively used to label objects, colors carry special significance, and items can easily become lost in surroundings that cannot be quickly scanned. Many tools seek to help blind people solve these problems by enabling them to query for additional information, such as color or text shown on the object. In this paper we argue that many useful problems may be better solved by directly modeling them as search problems, and present a solution called VizWiz::LocateIt that directly supports this type of interaction. VizWiz::LocateIt enables blind people to take a picture and ask for assistance in finding a specific object. The request is first forwarded to remote workers who outline the object, enabling efficient and accurate automatic computer vision to guide users interactively from their existing cellphones. A two-stage algorithm is presented that uses this information to guide users to the appropriate object interactively from their phone.",

To this end, we have designed and implemented a hardware/software module, which can be easily plugged into current PDAs to assist blind users in orientation. The solution, which comprises a two-channels haptic module as well as vocal support, has been exploited for moving through tagged objects. We also report on a user evaluation carried out with a number of blind users.",

"abstractNote": "Despite growing awareness of the accessibility issues surrounding touch screen use by blind people, designers still face challenges when creating accessible touch screen interfaces. One major stumbling block is a lack of understanding about how blind people actually use touch screens. We conducted two user studies that compared how blind people and sighted people use touch screen gestures. First, we conducted a gesture elicitation study in which 10 blind and 10 sighted people invented gestures to perform common computing tasks on a tablet PC. We found that blind people have different gesture preferences than sighted people, including preferences for edge-based gestures and gestures that involve tapping virtual keys on a keyboard. Second, we conducted a performance study in which the same participants performed a set of reference gestures. We found significant differences in the speed, size, and shape of gestures performed by blind people versus those performed by sighted people. Our results suggest new design guidelines for accessible touch screen interfaces.",

"abstractNote": "Many people with visual disabilities mainly use audio feedback as a primary modality for interaction. Representing the visual environment with appropriate sounds contributes to make it intelligible to the blind. This audio-encoded environment still needs to be accessed in the same way as sighted people scan visual contents with their gaze. A finger-based scanning could be seen as a gaze-like strategy for those with visual impairments to be able of sensing an audio-represented context. We present in this work a computational interface that meets both, the visual-audio codification and the multi-touch interaction, so as to enlarge legibility of the environment for the blind and to facilitate navigating to desired locations, exploration, and serendipitous discovery. The core of this interface is the color and depth codification into musical instruments sounds, which effectively provides spatial awareness, audio revealing of boundaries and obstacles detection. The main contribution of our work is the assistance provided by this interface toward an active interaction of the user with his fingers that makes it possible to selectively explore, to discover points of interest, develop personalized strategies for navigating, and, in general, enjoy a greater sense of independence.",

This paper describes an experiment to investigate the use of non-speech sounds to present dynamic information without using visual display space. Results showed that non-speech sound could be used in a simple share-dealing scenario to present a “sound graph” of share prices. This allowed participants to reduce the workload they had to invest in share-price monitoring as they could listen to the graph whilst they worked in a share accumulation window.",

To meet the needs of these users, a methodology for transforming graphical interfaces into nonvisual interfaces has been developed. In this design, the salient components of graphical interfaces are transformed into auditory interfaces. Based on a hierarchical model of the graphical interface, the auditory interface utilizes auditory icons to convey interface objects. Users navigate the interface by traversing its hierarchical structure. This design results in a usable interface that meets the needs of blind users while providing many of the benefits of graphical interfaces.",

"abstractNote": "This thesis proposes a set of principles to aid the design of user interfaces that enable blind users to read complex information by listening. Prior to this work speech based interfaces tended to ‘read at’, rather than being read by the listener. By addressing the themes of control of information flow and the lack of external memory, a set of guidelines have been produced that transform the passive listener to an active reader.\nProsody was used to add information to a spoken presentation of algebra in order to enhance its role as an external memory. A set of rules were developed that inserted prosodic cues for algebra into synthetic speech. An experiment found that these cues enhanced the recovery of syntactic structure; the recovery of content and reduced mental workload.\nA structure vbased browsing method and associated command language were used to add control over the information flow.An iterative cycle of design and evaluation allowed the development of a style of browsing that would allow the fast and accurate control needed for active reading.\nThe final component of the system was an audio glance at the structure of an algebra expression. This was a combination of the prosodic rules that enabled presentation of structure and audio messages called earcons. Experiments were conducted that showed these algebra earcons were able to rapidly convey a suitable representation of an expression from which structural complexity and type could be judged, thus facilitating the planning of what browsing moves to use.\nThe three components of the system wer drawn together and evaluated. A comparison was made with a conventional style of presentation. The new design was found to be more effective, efficient and satisfying by the users of the system. The design guidelines set forth in this thesis offer a method to make the access to complex information by blind people more usable.",

"abstractNote": "Motivation -- To provide suitable mobile text-entry interfaces for the disabled, designed considering their capabilities and needs. Research approach -- We analyzed 20 blind users and the difficulties they face with traditional text-entry approaches. We designed a new text-entry method, modelled accordingly to the design guidelines retrieved from the user studies and evaluated in comparison to the traditional approach through user evaluation. The navigation model presented shows to be effective both on keypad and touch screen based devices. Findings/Design -- Results show that if the user's limitations and capacities are taken into account, the first approach with the mobile device is subtle and the learning curve is accentuated. In opposite to traditional approaches, the theoretical values are likely to be achieved. Research limitations/Implications -- As the available set of target users is limited, the user studies were made with five users per group (3 groups/15 users). Originality/Value -- The research presents an innovative text-entry method and its comparison with commonly used methods. We also present a solution to provide text input in touch screen mobile devices for blind users. Take away message -- If the interaction is designed with the end users in mind, the best theoretical values are likely to be achieved.",

Their key advantages mean that users could use a player without having to look at its controls when on the move. Two very different evaluations of the player took place: one based on a standard usability experiment (comparing the new player to a standard design) and the other a video analysis of the player in use. Both of these showed significant usability improvements for the gesture/audio-based interface over a standard visual/pen-based display. The similarities and differences in the results produced by the two studies are discussed",

"abstractNote": "Recent advances in touch screen technology have increased the prevalence of touch screens and have prompted a wave of new touch screen-based devices. However, touch screens are still largely inaccessible to blind users, who must adopt error-prone compensatory strategies to use them or find accessible alternatives. This inaccessibility is due to interaction techniques that require the user to visually locate objects on the screen. To address this problem, we introduce Slide Rule, a set of audio-based multi-touch interaction techniques that enable blind users to access touch screen applications. We describe the design of Slide Rule, our interaction techniques, and a user study in which 10 blind people used Slide Rule and a button-based Pocket PC screen reader. Results show that Slide Rule was significantly faster than the button-based system, and was preferred by 7 of 10 users. However, users made more errors when using Slide Rule than when using the more familiar button-based system.",

However, these empowering devices have their own accessibility challenges. We present a formative study that examines how people with visual and motor disabilities select, adapt, and use mobile devices in their daily lives. We interviewed 20 participants with visual and motor disabilities and asked about their current use of mobile devices, including how they select them, how they use them while away from home, and how they adapt to accessibility challenges when on the go. Following the interviews, 19 participants completed a diary study in which they recorded their experiences using mobile devices for one week. Our results show that people with visual and motor disabilities use a variety of strategies to adapt inaccessible mobile devices and successfully use them to perform everyday tasks and navigate independently. We provide guidelines for more accessible and empowering mobile device design.",

"abstractNote": "This paper describes the development of a new technique for touchscreen interaction, based on a single gesture-driven adaptive software button. The button is intended to substitute the software keyboard, and provides text-entry functionality. Input is accomplished through recognition of finger gestures that is comprised of movement towards the eight basic directions in any position. The target user group of such an interaction technique is primarily blind people who could benefit significantly. The adaptability of the button provides complementary help and follows the style of interaction in a natural way. The analysis of the results, collected from twelve blindfolded subjects, revealed an encouraging tendency. During blind manipulation on touch screen, three of the subjects achieved a maximal typing speed of about 12 wpm after five trials. This suggests that the technique developed is reliable and robust enough to be possibly applied to diverse application platforms, including personal device assistants.",
