One thing addressed by this study that is not seen in many others is a measurement of how long it takes in order to process material after it is acquired. The study needed this data:

Important source: OCLC Research 2010 survey includes statistics about what percentage of material in special collections have been processed, and how. For us, this should be useful because it shows the baseline types of statistics that are necessary in order for us to make cross-institutional data available for similar studies.

This study's approach was to count whether there was an online record *at all* for material, and split the material by format (e.g. book, archival, AV, born-digital). They did not distinguish between levels of cataloging (e.g. accession records, minimal-level collection records, full records, etc.).

\n

In counting online records for archival collections specifically, they only tracked the existence of finding aids; they did not ask about what percentage of the collections had only accession records, MARC records, etc.

\n

Also interesting: the study notes what percentage of respondents use software such as Archon or Archivists' Toolkit. This could be useful for us, because these programs can automatically generate many types of statistics. This may be relevant to note when addressing the \"Cost/Benefit\" problem of tracking processing statistics.

\"One notable, early attempt to apply cost/benefit analysis across an entire library system was performed by MIT Libraries in 1969 and reported by Raffel and Shishko. However, despite acknowledging that cataloging used 21.2  percent of MIT Library’s general and research collection budget at the time—3.4 percent higher than the purchasing budget itself—the authors dedicate only four pages of the book to analysis of cataloging operations. Reviews of the cost/benefit analysis methods applied to MIT were not positive across the profession, largely because the analysis was performed by an economist and a political scientist, not a librarian. McAnally observed that “the authors suffer from two severe handicaps—relative ignorance about the details of libraries, learning, and research, and also the absence of clear objectives and good measures of success or effectiveness in the university library world.” Indeed, Raffel and
Shishko themselves had recognized the limitations of their method, noting that “much of the analysis that has been presented so far has relied primarily upon impressionistic judgments of the benefits associated with a given system and of comparisons among systems serving different objectives.” The study did not have broad impact either at MIT

Since its publication in 2005, of Mark A. Greene and Dennis Meissner's “More Product, Less Process: Revamping Traditional Archival Processing” has led to much discussion and self-examination within the archival community about working through backlogs. This article discusses the impact of Greene and Meissner's work and considers the questions and implications that the possible implementation of minimal processing provokes, in relation to financial, time, and privacy considerations, among others.
