Drawing from Adams's rhetorical theory and practice, this study theorizes a rhetoric of public-academic praxis that more accurately and effectively accounts for the complex relationship between universities and local communities. Adams's civic rhetoric additionally offers a useful point of departure for analyzing the historical development of this public/academic binary as part of broad U.S. social, political, and material transformations.
