This paper contributes to research by providing further evidence about such challenges from the tutor perspective and offers suggestions about how institutions may address these issues. The paper draws upon 23 semi-structured interviews conducted with tutors in a range of subject areas, from Scottish further and higher education. Tutors were positive about the role that ePortfolios could play in the learning environment to encourage personal development and a more reflective approach to studies, assist student transition and, in some cases, support assessment. Concerns were raised, however, relating to moving paper-based assessed portfolios online, the legal issues of implementing an ePortfolio and the technical robustness and flexibility of systems. Barriers were identified regarding tutors' lack of understanding about personal development and reflection, and their role in the academic environment, initiative fatigue and lack of access to information technology. It was felt that these could be overcome, especially with long-term institutional commitment, significant staff development and the creation of tutor support networks. In this study, the effect of the web-based portfolio building process on academic achievement and retention is explored. For this purpose, a study platform known as a computer-assisted personal development portfolio was designed for 30 Turkish students who participated in a web-based portfolio process. The academic achievements of the students were examined through an experimental design in which participants were divided into an experimental group and a control group and given a pre-test and a post-test. The results of the study revealed that the levels of both academic achievement and retention in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Methods A questionnaire containing statements and open questions was used to obtain feedback from students at the University of Dundee Medical School, Scotland. The responses to each statement were compared over 4 years (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003). Results Response rates were 83% in 1999, 70% in 2000, 89% in 2002 and 88% in 2003. A major finding is that students perceived that portfolio building heightened their understanding of the exit learning outcomes and enabled reflection on their work. Student reactions to the portfolio process were initially negative, although they appreciated that senior staff took time to become familiar with their work through reviewing their portfolios. Student attitudes became more positive over the 4 years as the process evolved. Although portfolio assessment was recognised as supporting student learning, portfolio building was perceived to interfere with clinical learning as a result of the excessive amounts of paper evidence required. Conclusions Paperwork should be kept within manageable limits. A student induction process that highlights the importance of providing evidence for achieving all learning outcomes, not just theoretical knowledge and skills, may be helpful in allaying student concern over portfolio building and assessment and support preparation for lifelong learning and reflective clinical practice. Large-scale systems are being developed in Europe and the United States, based on specially-designed proprietary or open-source software. In contrast, most Australian ePortfolio projects in schools are small-scale, locally-developed attempts to take advantage of digital formats to develop a range of literacies, express learners’ identities and present achievements to various audiences. This study aimed to explore practice educator perceptions of 'Generation Y' students. Methods: A questionnaire survey was sent to all practice educators affiliated with the university. The survey contained fixed choice questions on demographics and educators' knowledge of the term 'Generation Y', followed by open-ended questions on practice educator perceptions of occupational therapy 'Generation Y' students and the educational strategies used in practice education. Results: Anonymous responses were analysed using descriptive statistics, attribute coding and content analysis. Most educators considered that there was, in fact, a 'Generation Y student', describing them as confident with technology, over confident in their skill level and easily bored. Practice educators raised concerns regarding students' casual communication, poor professional behaviour, shallow professional reasoning and difficulty when receiving negative feedback. Conclusions: Overall, the results of this study suggest that 'Generation Y' students are having both a negative and a positive impact on practice education in occupational therapy. For educators, management of the overconfident student and professional reasoning development should be addressed in university practice education workshops. For students, the need for clarification of placement expectations on professional behaviour and communication was indicated. Students may also require 'listening to feedback' skill development prior to practice education. Universities and practice educators should consider the development of technological resources for practice education, including simulation, to meet the needs of the, now recognised 'Generation Y' student. The faculty taught six-credit, three-credit, and two-credit online courses to 701 students in the winter 2004 term using the WebCT platform. The data were collected using an 11-question survey that focused on faculty's use of technology; time spent in online instructional activities; perceptions of faculty role; and assessment of student work. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were used to interpret the data. The investigators intended to use the results for several purposes. The first purpose was to collect data on the use of WebCT tools and determine the level or faculty expertise in online teaching. The second purpose was to add to the growing body of research about online teaching and learning that currently contains very little information about graduate faculty experiences. The third purpose of the study was to provide data that corroborates the notion that online teaching needs to be defined and rewarded in new ways. Research indicates that more and more higher education institutions, particularly private universities, are expanding their online course offerings at meteoric rates (Allen & Seaman, 2003; Berg, 2002; Huber & Lowry, 2003). This trend, however, has not resulted in the appropriate changes with regard to traditional teaching and learning paradigms (Bender, 2003; Goodyear, 2002; Stephenson, 2001; Palloff & Pratt, 1999, 2001; Yoon, 2003). The online instructional trend is also resulting in the ability to deliver courses and programs to greater numbers of students at much lower costs to institutions (Berg, 2002; Palloff & Pratt, 2001). On the basis of Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of flow, flow was conceptualised as a complex, multimentional, reflective construct composing of ‘enjoyment’, ‘telepresence’, ‘focused attention’, ‘engagement’ and ‘time distortion’ on the part of learners. A flow model was put forward with regard to virtual class environment in a traditional university context, comprised with flow antecedents, flow and flow consequences. Based on the model, a virtual-course flow measure was developed and administered to 525 undergraduate students engaged in virtual classes in order to examine the empirical relationships between measured flow antecedents, flow experiences and flow consequence-course satisfaction in this case. The analysis of the data showed that: (1) students’ perceptions of their level of ‘skill’ and ‘challenge’ specific to each course are critical to determining the level of flow, (2) flow is a significant predictor of course satisfaction and (3) other than flow, individual differences such as ‘gender’ and ‘having a clear goal’ can make a significant difference in the level of flow in a virtual course. These findings are discussed along with the implications for bringing up a computer-mediated environment more conducive to flow and learning. Although teachers used computers at home and school, they were not wholly comfortable with the technology. Familiarity with computers predicted greater comfort with technology and greater comfort was related to greater integration in the classroom. Thematic analysis of the focus groups yielded six major themes, including issues related to: support, teachers, context and access, students, computer hardware and software problems, and external or other priorities. The discussion of computer integration also inspired substantial emotional responses on the part of teachers. Together, the survey and focus-group findings yielded a framework for identifying individual and environmental issues which impact on computer integration.
