Central government ordinances helped create ‘dysfunctional’ sprawl by mandating big lots and overly wide streets. Fifty percent of the city’s urban plan of approximately 1300 km2 represents a pattern of untimely, undeveloped subdivisions. Much of this premature sub-divisioning was a result of speculative land deals. The current area of undeveloped subdivided land is approximately 650 km2, which is roughly the equivalent to the city’s land currently developed. The author argues that government policies and inefficient urban planning practices have encouraged the transformation of the peripheral desert landscape into unchecked land sub-divisioning championed by land developers and speculators. Using a comparative approach, the paper attempts to highlight sociopolitical and other cultural factors that underlie this inefficient sprawl at the fringe. Quantifying landscape pattern and its change is essential for the monitoring and assessment of ecological consequences of urbanization. Combining gradient analysis with landscape metrics, we attempted to quantify the spatial pattern of urbanization in the Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona, USA. Several landscape metrics were computed along a 165 km long and 15 km wide transect with a moving window. The research was designed to address four research questions: How do different land use types change with distance away from the urban center? Do different land use types have their own unique spatial signatures? Can urbanization gradients be detected using landscape pattern analysis? How do the urban gradients differ among landscape metrics? The answers to these questions were generally affirmative and informative. The results showed that the spatial pattern of urbanization could be reliably quantified using landscape metrics with a gradient analysis approach, and the location of the urbanization center could be identified precisely and consistently with multiple indices. Different land use types exhibited distinctive, but not necessarily unique, spatial signatures that were dependent on specific landscape metrics. The changes in landscape pattern along the transect have important ecological implications, and quantifying the urbanization gradient, as illustrated in this paper, is an important first step to Second, the suburbs are much more of a problem than many environmental theorists suppose, in part because suburban patterns of development are entrenched and difficult to change, and in part because they pose an important challenge to the very idea of an environmental ethic. Study I compares interview data generated by residents living in two different locations. Dominant and shared themes characterizing respondents' “sense of self-in-place” suggests that eight themes undergird depictions and perceptions of residential location. Study II extends these findings by focusing on individuals who have recently taken up residence on the urban fringe. Analysis reveals a seven-dimension schema for housing preferences in line with reasons respondents from the first study used for wanting to relocate. Findings are discussed in relationship to the management of urban sprawl, the nature of appeals directed at potential homebuyers, and the protection of natural resources. metropolitan regions. A small number of metropolitan counties have adopted green belt strategies in an attempt to curb sprawling urban, suburban, and rural residential development in their hinterlands. These counties are using urban growth boundaries, low-density agricultural zoning, and the purchase of development rights to farmland to create and maintain green belts. The performance of green belts as a growth management tool in six counties is mixed. There has been notable success in the amount of farmland preserved in green belts compared with farmland developed. But in one-half of the counties, rates of population growth have exceeded the national average, and housing has become much less affordable than the national average. Still, the fiscal condition of these counties is strong.
