This tragic event led to a prompt increase in the use of internet technologies by local citizens who utilized platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and blogs in order to reconstruct online the offline local public spaces of communication which had been damaged or destroyed by the quake. \n\nA year after the tragedy, to protest against the Italian state due to the problem of the debris that continued to be unremoved from the historical city centre, some citizens decided to fled into the streets with their wheelbarrows and autonomously remove the rubble: a new movement had emerged which would have later been labelled as “the people of the wheelbarrows”. These people aim at involving the citizenship in the decisional processes regarding L’Aquila reconstruction, in contrast to the government’s bottom-up strategies. Moreover, they want to promote transparency in the management of the disaster funds and to re-open the militarized “red zone” created in the city centre. Finally, the movement wants to make the public opinion aware of the issue of the debris removal and the urgent need for the historical centre reconstruction. \n\nThe aim of this paper is to analyse the internet related practices of the actors of “the people of the wheelbarrows”. With the triangulation of semi-structured interviews, a content analysis of the movement’s official Facebook group and a combination of online and offline ethnography, we try to answer to the following research questions: how do the people of the wheelbarrows interact with the internet to organize collective action? How is the movement participation articulated between online spaces and offline squares, meetings and events? \n\nOur findings highlight the importance of the local dimension and the interplay between the online and the offline dimensions (Bennett, 2003, 2005; Loader 2008). Dominant approaches to such events in the field of\nmedia and communications are often text-centred, focussing on the media’s\nframing of protest, overlooking the actions against and interactions with the\nmedia at such sites. This oversight is significant given that contemporary political\nstruggle occurs on the ground, as well as with and through the media.\nThe theoretical framework applies past media/movement scholarship to\nemerging discourses on mediation which view media – its content, producers,\nusers, technologies, culture and rituals – as an ongoing and reflexive process,\nactualised through analysing activists’ media-oriented practices (Couldry, 2004,\nSilverstone, 2005). The methodological approach follows Burawoy’s (1998)\n“extended method” drawing on a year of participant observation and 32 in-depth\ninterviews.\n\nAnalysis is undertaken on an activist, group and network level; before and at the\nSummit. The findings show that activists demonstrate a reflexive awareness of\nmedia, including lay theories of media which inform their actions. On a networklevel,\nDissent! established a policy abstaining from media interaction. Yet,\ndespite this, on a group-level, the CounterSpin Collective formed within Dissent!\nto manage media interest. The Collective’s media practices are shown to be\ncharacterised by a strategy of dual adaptation; adapting to both Dissent!’s\npolitical limitations and the media’s demands. The analysis of the site of protest\nin Scotland – Hori-Zone eco-village – and the protest actions undertaken from it,\nfurther demonstrates the way in which media orients and permeates activists\npractices. The concept of spectacular action is developed to analyse a shift in the\ntype of protest activities conducted at a media event from direct action to the\nsimulation of direct action, valuing symbolic over physical disruption.\nThis thesis contributes to a growing interest in the concept of mediation through\nthe emerging field of media practice, offering both empirical evidence and revised\ntheory. this article takes a case study approach to the protests of the Dissent! network at the 2005 Gleneagles G8 Summit. Of interest is how activists anticipated, understood and reflexively navigated the ‘mediated opportunity’ and shifting media dynamics of the G8 Summit. The analysis focuses largely on the representational reverberations of the July 7th, 2005 London bombings (7/7 bombings) on Dissent! protests. Es reseñable la manera en que los activistas anticipan, comprenden y negocian de forma reflexiva la oportunidad mediatizada y la dinámica cambiante de los medios de comunicación en relación con la citada cumbre. El análisis realizado se centra en las consecuencias representacionales para las protestas de Dissent!, derivadas de los ataques terroristas del 7 de julio en Londres.
