I.27-95[a])', geht es um die Darstellung der Interpretation eines tibetischen buddhistischen Gelehrten aus dem 14./15. Jh. einer philosophischen Abhandlung aus Indien, die auf das 5 Jh. n.u.Z. zurückdatiert wird. Das Thema dieser Abhandlung, dem RatnagotravibhAga, ist die Buddha-Natur (Skt. tathAgatagarbha; Tib. de bzhin gshegs pa’i snying po), welche das grundlegende Potenzial der Lebewesen zur Erleuchtung darstellt, bzw. deren grundsätzlich bereits erleuchtete, jedoch von abtrennbaren geistigen Befleckungen verdeckte, Natur. \nIm ersten Teil der Arbeit gebe ich einem kurzen Überblick über die Lehre und stelle dessen kanonische Quelle vor. \nDer zweite Abschnitt behandelt den Ratnagotravibhāga als wichtigstes Werk der indischen Kommentarliteratur zu diesem Thema. Hier wird auf textgeschichtliche Fragen eingegangen, sowie auf die Rezeption dieses Werkes in Indien und in Tibet. Abschließend gebe ich einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Etappen der modernen wissenschaftlichen Darstellung der Thematik.\nDas dritte Kapitel behandelt Leben und Werk von Rong-ston Shes-bya kun-rig (1367-1449), dem Autor des von mir behandelten Kommentars, sowie dessen Darstellung der Buddha-Natur mittels einer Studie des zentralen Teils seines Kommentars, und vergleicht seinen Standpunkt mit denen anderer tibetischer Philosophen. \nDer letzte Teil meiner Arbeit besteht aus einer annotierten Übersetzung von Rong-stons Kommentar zum vierten Kapitel des RatnagotravibhAga.\nDen Abschluss der Arbeit stellen die aus Primär- und Sekundärliteratur bestehende Bibliographie, sowie drei Anhänge dar: ein detailliertes Inhaltsverzeichnis des übersetzten Kommentars, die deutschen Zusammenfassung In the process it attempts to identify in the early sources the precedents of some of the bold statements in the Lotus Sūtra which appear as complete innovations, but may be elaborations of elements contained in Pāli sources in germinal form. Century Mahāyāna Buddhist text Bodhicaryāvatāra (BCA) and its significance as a vehicle for cultural exchange. We trace its history in India and beyond, from its proposed author Śāntideva’s hand, its contemporary influence in India, and its impact in the lands—Nepal, Tibet, China, Mongolia, and beyond—and languages—Sanskrit, Newari, Tibetan, Chinese, Mongolian, and others—where it travelled. The nature of its influence has varied with the times and places where it has found itself, but in all instances it received a prominent place of canonical status, and was mostly revered. This is perhaps surprising taking into account its late composition. As the thesis illustrates this is due to the orthopraxic nature of Buddhism, where the criteria for buddhavacana (word of the Buddha) is less based on historical assumptions, and more on the practical content of the Buddhist teachings. The BCA has received quite a lot of attention in modern scholarship since the first publication of a critical Sanskrit edition by Minayev in 1889. A large number of new manuscripts of the text have surfaced since then, and a separate chapter is dedicated to philological concerns and the dire need for a new and updated version that will take into account also the new knowledge we now have of the texts history. A mostly unnoticed commentary, the Bodhicaryāvatāra-ṭippaṇi, also receives is long overdue attention in this chapter. The text is still very influential within Mahāyāna Buddhism today, and the last chapter presents a lecture given on the text by the 14th Dalai Lama in January of 2009. Traditionally, Buddhist fundamentalists in Burma have sought to achieve salvation in part through the building of shrines to Buddha, though sponsorship of other types of rites, eg, gifts of food or clothing, is also common. This focus on shrine building & other rites as paths to salvation led Buddhist fundamentalists to favor a socialist economic form in opposition to the Western capitalism imported by the British in the 19th century. However, Buddhist socialism fell into disrepute with the failure of the government's socialist initiatives. Buddhism in Thailand has developed a wider critique of capitalism than exists in Burma, largely due to the absence of political upheaval caused by colonialism & to a reformist fundamentalist movement that began in the 19th century. Neither form of Buddhist economics has played a large role in shaping debates about the relationship of local economies to the global system, primarily because they have not been able to translate their religious positions into effective public policy.
