Design: This study was structured to identify relationships and predictors of goalie performance. Material and Methods: Because athletes playing solo positions in team sports have not been analyzed in depth in terms of precompetition anxiety and because goalkeeper performance is critical to game outcome, we undertook a study of 43 goalies at a hockey camp, These goalies completed psychometric inventories to assess trait and state anxiety, confidence, life stress, and social support, Holter monitors measured heart rate while the goalies rotated through on-ice stations, Goalies were videotaped at the puck-shooting machine station, and performance (percent saves) was calculated. Results: Trait (somatic) anxiety and positive mood state (ability to share) had different but significant relationships with on-ice performance, Heart rates ranged from 88 to 208 beats/min at the on-ice stations, Mean heart rate for older goalies (14 to 18 years of age) was 164 beats/min at the puck-shooting machine and 176 beats/min at other stations such as the slap-shot station. Mood measures were administered pre- and postgame at four games: 2 games were won, 2 were lost. A mixed between and within subjects design was used for data analysis, in which game outcome (win or loss) was the between subjects factor, and the within subjects factor was time of testing (pre- vs, postgame). Numerous statistically significant results concerning the emotional states experienced prior to competitive sport and in response to winning and losing were obtained. Winning produced a range of pleasant emotional outcomes and reductions in arousal and stress: losing produced strong unpleasant emotional changes, a reduction in arousal but no reduction in stress. Results showed that effect sizes (ESs) for the level of achievement metaanalysis were minimal (Weighted Mean ES = .10, SD = .07), a finding consistent with a previous meta-analysis by Rowley, Landers, Kyllo, and Etnier (1995). Larger effects were found for the performance outcome meta-analysis (Weighted Mean ES = .31, SD = .12). Effects were moderate for vigor, confusion, and depression, small for anger and tension, and very small for fatigue. All effects were in the direction predicted by Morgan's (1985) Mental Health Model. Effects were larger in sports of short duration, in sports involving open skills, and where performance was judged using self-referenced criteria. Pooled time-series analysis showed significant associations between the average of teammates' happy moods and the players own moods and subjective performances; the associations 4 ere independent of hassles and favorable standing in the match. Mood linkage was greater when players were happier and engaged in collective activity. An intraperson analysis of data from these teams and ? other teams showed that mood linkage was also greater for players who were older, more committed to the team. and more susceptible to emotional contagion. The model postulates that as an athlete's mental health either worsens or improves performance should fall or rise accordingly, and there is now considerable support for this view. Studies have shown that between 70 and 85% of successful and unsuccessful athletes can be identified using general psychological measures of personality structure and mood state, a level superior to chance but insufficient for the purpose of selecting athletes. Longitudinal MHM research indicates that the mood state responses of athletes exhibit a dose-response relationship with their training load, a finding that has shown potential for reducing the incidence of the staleness syndrome in athletes who undergo intensive physical training. The MHM also has implications for the general care of athletes as support services have traditionally been limited to preventing or treating physical problems. Despite its simple premise and empirical support, the MHM has often been mischaracterised in the sport psychology literature and recently some authors have questioned its validity. Performance was self-referenced by comparing fitness test scores with a previous best score assessed four weeks earlier. Participants who equaled or bettered their previous best score were classified as Successful, Those who did not match their previous score were classified as Unsuccessful, Discriminant function analysis indicated that 31 participants (81.6%) could be correctly classified as Successful or Unsuccessful based on preperformance Brunel Mood scores, Discriminant function coefficients indicated that Confusion, Fatigue, and Vigor contributed significantly to the discrimination. For the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, discriminant function analysis indicated that 26 participants (68.4%) could be correctly classified as Successful or Unsuccessful, with Negative Affect and Positive Affect contributing significantly to the discrimination, Summarizing negative mood into a single factor may lead to a substantial loss of information. The POMS is a questionnaire for the measurement of moods, that has shown to be useful in different settings, particularly in sports. In a preliminary work (Arce, Andrade & Seoane, 2000) the POMS was translated into Spanish and administered to a 374 students' sample. Considering both psychometric and semantic criteria, some items had to be replaced and two of them were eliminated from the original scale. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the 63-item POMS version with a sample of 216 athletes. Using item and factor analyses the questionnaire was shortened to 48 items measuring six mood factors: Anger, Depression, Tension, Fatigue, Vigor, and Friendliness. Reliability coefficients (Cronbach's Alphas) for the factors ranged from .76 (Friendliness) to .91 (Anger). Besides, athletes' scores were compared with the scores obtained by a sample of 268 non-athletes. Significant differences were found between athletes and non-athletes on Anger, Tension, Vigor, and Friendliness. The observed differences between both samples on Depression were not significant.
