In order to help provide empirical data to help settle the longstanding debate about the direction of this relationship, we conducted a four-wave national panel study with repeated measurement of community attachment and local news media use across waves two, three and four, with antecedent demographic and structural variables measured in the first wave. Cross-sectional analyses confirmed the expected relationship between news use and community attachment, but more conservative panel analyses with control for prior levels of outcome variables indicated no significant relationships. An additional prediction about the role of community size as a moderator of the relationship between local news use and community attachment was not supported. This study examines the relationship between white ethnic diversity and community attachment in 99 small Iowa towns. Methods. Our data come from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Rural Development Initiative (RDI) at Iowa State University. The RDI data, which consist of interviews with approximately 110 people in each of the 99 towns, are used to develop a community attachment score for each town. These scores serve as the dependent variable in ordinary least squares regression models to assess the extent to which ethnic diversity is related to attachment. Results. The findings show that towns with high levels of white ethnic diversity tend to have low levels of community attachment. Moreover, residents of diverse towns tend to view their communities with more suspicion and tend to be less involved in community activities than citizens in more homogeneous towns. Conclusions. Looked at narrowly, these results indicate that white ethnic diversity may be detrimental to community building in small Iowa towns. Recent research, however, has focused on informal ties (acquaintanceships, friendships, neighboring) rather than on formal associations. This study specifies a systemic model that includes length of residence and other personal attributes as exogenous variables, and measures of formal and informal ties as intervening attributes; among formal ties, local church participation is given special consideration. Findings support the conclusion of others that community attachment is higher when friendships (informal ties) are predominantly local. Findings also demonstrate the importance of local associational participation (formal ties) both directly and, indirectly, as they affect friendship patterns. In particular, local churches aid in building secular ties and increase dependence on local friendships, both of which increase attachment. The present study uses multilevel modeling to test the linear development model (Berry & Kasarda, 1977) which predicts that community structural pluralism would be negatively associated with individual-level social trust, even while controlling for individual-level predictors including media use and length of residence. Using survey data from 21 communities included in the 2001 Social Capital Community Benchmark Study, the analysis includes a rigorous test of the community structural pluralism model by determining whether the relationship between media use and social trust varies across communities. In support of the linear development model, community structural pluralism was negatively associated with social trust even while controlling for individual-level predictors. This study challenges this notion and, drawing on the community attachment model, hypothesizes that personal experience normally will increase newspaper reading. Personal experience increases reading because rarely is it identical or isomorphic with news coverage, especially in pluralistic systems, and because, like social ties in general, personal experience often stimulates additional needs for information.
