"abstractNote": "Aim of this paper is to indicate some serious problems in formulating the interchange of information among the component parts of a firm or, indeed, other organization. Team theory is taken as a basic model. The elements of a firm, in team theory, are agents among whom both decision making and knowledge are dispersed. The problem, at least as usually formulated, is that of design. It is to determine an allocation of information and a set of decision rules for the individual agents so as to optimize some given payoff function for the firm. The payoff depends on the actions taken by all the agents in the firm and on some environmental factors not known at the time the team is designed. These environmental factors are usually referred to as the state of the work. The concept of information for an agent is defined as usual in statistical decision theory or communication theory. A Paper of an economist Martin Weitzmann on prices vs. quantities as a team problem is studied, to illustrate the analysis in a simple case. This example was used for some reflections on the counterintuitive implications of the much-used quadratic payoff functions. The author conclude by resuming some recent developments which illustrate some economies in information transfer when the law of large numbers can be used.",

"abstractNote": "Scientific publishing is rapidly shifting from a paper-based system to one of predominantly electronic distribution, in which universities purchase site licenses for online access to journal contents. Will these changes necessarily benefit the scientific community? By using basic microeconomics and elementary statistical theory, we address this question and find a surprising answer. If a journal is priced to maximize the publisher's profits, scholars on average are likely to be worse off when universities purchase site licenses than they would be if access were by individual subscriptions only. However, site licenses are not always disadvantageous. Journals issued by professional societies and university presses are often priced so as to maximize subscriptions while recovering average costs. When such journals are sustained by institutional site licenses, the net benefits to the scientific community are larger than if these journals are sold only by individual subscriptions.",

Despite this shift, the basic patterns of journal pricing have remained largely unchanged. The large commercial publishers charge dramatically higher prices to institutions than do professional societies and university presses. These price differences do not reflect differences in quality as measured by citation rate. We discuss the effect of price and citation rate of a journal on library subscriptions and offer an explanation for why competition has not been able to erode the price differences between commercial and non-profit journals.</p>",

"abstractNote": "The widespread prevalence and persistence of misinformation in contemporary societies, such as the false belief that there\nis a link between childhood vaccinations and autism, is a matter of public concern. For example, the myths surrounding\nvaccinations, which prompted some parents to withhold immunization from their children, have led to a marked increase in\nvaccine-preventable disease, as well as unnecessary public expenditure on research and public-information campaigns aimed at\nrectifying the situation.\nWe first examine the mechanisms by which such misinformation is disseminated in society, both inadvertently and purposely.\nMisinformation can originate from rumors but also from works of fiction, governments and politicians, and vested interests.\nMoreover, changes in the media landscape, including the arrival of the Internet, have fundamentally influenced the ways in which\ninformation is communicated and misinformation is spread.\nWe next move to misinformation at the level of the individual, and review the cognitive factors that often render\nmisinformation resistant to correction. We consider how people assess the truth of statements and what makes people believe\ncertain things but not others. We look at people’s memory for misinformation and answer the questions of why retractions\nof misinformation are so ineffective in memory updating and why efforts to retract misinformation can even backfire and,\nironically, increase misbelief. Though ideology and personal worldviews can be major obstacles for debiasing, there nonetheless\nare a number of effective techniques for reducing the impact of misinformation, and we pay special attention to these factors\nthat aid in debiasing.\nWe conclude by providing specific recommendations for the debunking of misinformation. These recommendations pertain\nto the ways in which corrections should be designed, structured, and applied in order to maximize their impact. Grounded in cognitive psychological theory, these recommendations may help practitioners—including journalists, health professionals,\neducators,",
