The direction of these adoptions is from south to north and from east to west. Scrutiny of previous research shows that there is a discrepancy between the supply and demand of children for adoption. While there are millions of orphans and children in the world needing homes, Western adoptive parents queue for what are considered to be `adoptable' children. Drawing on 15 thematic interviews with Finnish adoptive parents this article considers the reasons behind the recent trend to adopt from abroad, and how parental preferences are formed in individual families. It is shown that adopting is primarily connected to family formation, and is linked to a powerful desire to experience parenthood. Parental preferences are a function of the changing demands and expectations of parenting in general in the West. Adoption from abroad just provides a new way of fulfilling these expectations. The ideal child is a healthy female infant of European or Asian origin that allows the adoptive parents to fulfil and perform their ideal parental roles. On the global level parents' hopes and anxieties result in the stratification of children in transnational adoption by age, skin colour, health and gender, further escalating the discrepancy between demand and supply. // ABSTRACT IN FRENCH: L'adoption transnationale connaît aujourd'hui une période de pointe. Ces adoptions se font du sud au nord et de l'est à l'ouest. L'examen de la recherche antérieure démontre qu'il existe une différence entre l'offre et la demande d'enfants à adopter. Tandis qu'il y a des millions d'orphelins et d'enfants dans le monde qui ont besoin de foyers, les parents adoptifs occidentaux font la queue pour des enfants qui sont considérés comme \"adoptables.\" Se basant sur 15 interviews à thème avec des parents adoptifs finlandais, cet article traite des raisons derrière la tendance récente à adopter de l'étranger et la manière dont les préférences parentales se construisent dans des foyers individuels. Il est démontré que l'adoption est surtout connectée à la formation de familles et qu'elle est liée à un fort désir d'expérimenter la parenté. Les préférences parentales sont fonction des demandes et attentes changeantes de la parenté en général en occident. L'adoption de l'étranger ne fait que proposer une nouvelle façon de remplir ces attentes. L'enfant idéal est un bébé femelle en bonne santé d'origine européenne ou asiatique et qui permet aux parents adoptifs de remplir leurs rôles parentaux idéaux. Au niveau global, les espoirs et inquiétudes des parents résultent en une classification des enfants dans l'adoption transnationale en fonction de leur âge, couleur, état de santé et sexe, ce qui renforce la différence entre l'offre et la demande. // ABSTRACT IN SPANISH: La adopción internacional ha alcanzado unas cuotas imprevistas. La dirección de las adopciones es de sur a norte y de este a oeste. El análisis de investigaciones anteriores demuestra que existe un claro desequilibrio entre la demanda y la oferta. A pesar de que hay millones de niños huérfanos y necesitados de hogar en el mundo, los padres adoptantes occidentales hacen cola para tener \"niños idóneos para la adopción.\" El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar, a la luz de entrevistas temáticos con padres adoptantes finlandeses, sobre las razones de la actual tendencia a adoptar un niños desde el extranjero. También son objeto de análisis las preferencias de los padres sobre su futuro hijo, así como la formación de estas preferencias dentro de la familia. Las adopciones están, al parecer, estrechamente relacionadas con la creación de familia y el deseo de vivir la paternidad. Los deseos y preferencias de los padres sobre el niños se inscriben dentro de un extenso cambio que se ha producido en el papel de los padres en el occidente. La adopción internacional debe verse tan sólo como un nuevo medio para alcanzar el objetivo deseado. El niños adoptivo ideal, el que ofrece las mejores posibilidades para realizar una paternidad ideal, es una niña sana de origen europeo o asiático. En el plano global, los deseos y preferencias de los padres conducen a la formación de una jerarquía enter los niños adoptivos en relación con la edad, el color de la piel, el estado de salud y el sexo, lo cual, por otra parte, es susceptible de intensificar aun más las presiones de la demanda.
