"abstractNote": "Background Active Virtual Reality Gaming (AVG) may be useful for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) to practice motor skills if their movement patterns are good quality whilst playing AVG.\nObjective This study aimed to examine: 1) the quality of motor patterns of children with DCD playing AVG by comparing them to typically developing children (TD), and 2) whether differences existed in the motor patterns utilized on two AVG types: Sony PlayStation 3 Move and Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect.\nDesign Quasi-experimental biomechanical laboratory based study.\nMethods Twenty-one children with DCD, aged 10 to 12 years, and 19 age and sex matched TD children played a match of table tennis on each AVG type. Hand path, wrist angle and elbow angle were recorded using the Vicon motion analysis system. Linear mixed-model analyses were utilised to determine differences between DCD and TD groups and Move and Kinect AVG type for forehands and backhands.\nResults Children with DCD utilized a slower hand path speed (backhand Mean Difference (MD): 1.20ms-1, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.41 to 1.98); greater wrist extension (forehand MD: 34.3°, 95% CI: 22.6 to 47.0); and greater elbow flexion (forehand MD: 22.3°, 95% CI: 7.4 to 37.1) than TD children when playing AVG. There were also differences in movement patterns utilized between AVG types.\nLimitations Only simple kinematic measures were compared and no data regarding movement outcome were assessed.\nConclusions If a therapeutic treatment goal is to promote movement quality in children with DCD clinical judgement is required to select the most appropriate AVG type and determine whether movement quality is adequate for unsupervised practice.",

"abstractNote": "Differences in the kinematics and kinetics of overground running have been reported between boys with and without developmental coordination disorder (DCD). This study compared the kinematics of overground and treadmill running in children with and without DCD to determine whether any differences in technique are maintained, as this may influence the outcome of laboratory treadmill studies of running economy in this population. Nine boys with DCD (10.3±1.1 year) and 10 typically developing (TD) controls (9.7±1 year) ran on a treadmill and overground at a matched velocity (8.8±0.9km/h). Kinematic data of the trunk and lower limb were obtained for both conditions using a 12-camera Vicon MX system. Both groups displayed an increase in stance time (p<0.001), shorter stride length (p<0.001), higher cadence (p<0.001) and reduced ankle plantar flexion immediately after toe-off (p<0.05) when running on the treadmill compared with overground. The DCD group had longer stance time (p<0.009) and decreased knee flexion at mid-swing (p=0.04) while running overground compared to their peers, but these differences were maintained when running on the treadmill. Treadmill running improved ankle joint symmetry in the DCD group compared with running overground (p=0.019). Overall, these findings suggest that there are limited differences in joint kinematics and lower limb symmetry between overground and treadmill running in this population. Accordingly, laboratory studies of treadmill running in children with DCD are likely representative of the energy demands of running.",

"abstractNote": "OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of neonatal caffeine treatment on rates of developmental coordination disorder (DCD).\nSTUDY DESIGN: Children in the Caffeine for Apnea of Prematurity trial were assessed for motor performance (Movement Assessment Battery for Children [MABC]), clinical signs of cerebral palsy, and Full-Scale IQ at 5 years of age by staff who were unaware of the children's treatment group. DCD was defined as MABC <5th percentile in children with a Full-Scale IQ >69 who did not have a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.\nRESULTS: There were 1433 children with known MABC corrected-age percentile as well as known Full-Scale IQ at 5 years and cerebral palsy status, of whom 735 had been randomly assigned to caffeine and 698 to placebo therapy. The rate of DCD was lower in those treated with caffeine (11.3%) than in the placebo group (15.2%) (OR adjusted for center and baseline covariates, 0.71, 95% CI, 0.52-0.97; P = .032).\nCONCLUSIONS: Neonatal caffeine therapy for apnea of prematurity reduces the rate of DCD at 5 years of age. As more children have DCD than have cerebral palsy, this is an important additional benefit from neonatal caffeine treatment.",

"abstractNote": "The present study aimed to explore the effectiveness of chronic aerobic exercise intervention on the behavioral and neuroelectric performances of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) when carrying out a visuospatial working memory (VSWM) task. Twenty typically developing children and 40 children with DCD, equally divided into DCD-training and DCD nontraining groups, performed the cognitive task with concomitant event-related potential recording before and after 16 weeks of endurance training. Results indicated that the children with DCD displayed VSWM deficits with regard to behavioral performance (i.e., slower reaction time and low accuracy rate) and the neuroelectric indices (i.e., smaller P3 and pSW amplitudes) during the retrieval-process phase as reported in previous studies. However, after the exercise intervention, DCD-training group showed significantly higher accuracy rates and enhanced P3 amplitudes during the encoding and retrieval-process phases, compared with their pre-training performances. These findings suggest that increased cardiorespiratory fitness could effectively improve the performance of the VSWM task in children with DCD, by enabling the allocation of greater working memory resources related to encoding and retrieval.",

In a first study on a large sample of children, we assessed the reliability and structure of the Italian adaptation of the MOQ-T. Results showed a good reliability of the questionnaire and a hierarchical structure with two first-order factors (reflecting motor and handwriting skills), which are influenced by a second-order factor (general motor function) at the top. In a second study, we looked at the external validity of the MOQ-T and found that children with symptoms of Developmental Coordination Disorder (children with high scores on the MOQ-T) also had difficulty reproducing gestures, either imitating others or in response to verbal prompts. Our results also showed that children with high MOQ-T scores had visuospatial WM impairments. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Objectives: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of the physical motion of a horse (riding therapy) combined with the audiovisual perception of this motion on a group of children with dyspraxia in terms of cognition, mood arousal, and gait variability. Design: The study design was a pretest/post-test. Settings/location: The study was conducted at the Fettercairn Youth Horse Project, Fettercairn, Tallaght, Dublin. Subjects: Forty (40) children ranging from 6 to 15 years of age with a primary diagnosis of dyspraxia were the study subjects. Interventions: Children meeting inclusion criteria participated in six 30-minute horse-riding sessions and two 30-minute audiovisual screening sessions. Outcome measures: A Standard Progressive Matrices test (also known as the Ravens test) was used to measure aspects of general intelligence. A Childhood Depression Inventory (CDI) questionnaire was used to assess cognitive, affective, and behavioral signs of depression. A GAITRite Pressure Mapping System analyzed foot function and gait variability by measuring single and double support, cycle time, cadence, toe in/out, and stride length. Results: Significant improvements were evident on the Ravens test and the CDI by the end of the study period. The amount of both single and double support required while completing the walking task also was significantly reduced. Improvements were visible on toe in/out values, cycle time, and cadence. Changes in stride length did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: These findings support the theory that riding therapy and/or the perception of beat-based rhythms, as experienced by the rider on the horse, stimulates cognition, mood, and gait parameters. In addition, the data also pointed to the potential value of an audiovisual approach to equine therapy.",

"abstractNote": "We reviewed 11 articles, including efficacy and effectiveness studies, addressing intervention effectiveness for children and youth published in 2012 in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy and organized them by level and type of research according to a framework adapted from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Compared with articles published in previous years, these studies showed improvement in their ability to guide practitioners to make evidence-based decisions by increasing understanding of the intervention's pragmatic relevance and the extent to which it promotes participation in childhood and adolescent occupations. Studies' evidence levels have increased along with efforts to increase scientific rigor. Intervention fidelity was included in several of the studies, but not consistently. Siblings and other family members were not examined, and none of the articles reviewed described longitudinal studies. Measures of client acceptability and cost-benefit analysis need more attention in future studies.",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to determine whether children with potential developmental coordination disorder (p-DCD) demonstrate increased arterial stiffness and thickness compared to age and school matched controls (mean age 14.7 yrs). We also assessed whether these measures differed by sex. Compliance, distensibility, and intima-media thickness (IMT) were measured at the common carotid artery for 28 children with p-DCD and 47 controls. ECG-R-wave-toe pulse wave velocity (PWV) was also measured for 29 children with p-DCD and 45 controls. We found that compared to controls males with p-DCD had significantly higher PWV (3.8±0.2 vs. 4.1±0.3, p=0.001) and lower distensibility (0.82± 0.19 vs. 0.70± 0.17, p=0.034) while females showed no significant differences (p=0.523 and p=0.123 respectively). As a result, it is apparent that sex differences exist with respect to arterial health within this population and that children with p-DCD may be more likely to develop cardiovascular disease later in life.",

"abstractNote": "Introduction: In light of current research data we assessed the role of CNTF in the treatment of specific developmental motor disorders in infants. Methods: Forty-nine infants aged between 1 and 12 months presenting specific developmental motor disorders of different degree of severity (study group) and 15 healthy children were investigated. The study group patients were administered CNTF medication (Italian company-Guna). We assessed serum levels of CNTF before and after treatment using the immunoenzymatic method. Results: Our results are in line with research data and suggest a relationship between the serum concentration of CNTF and motor disorders in infants. We observed significantly lower serum levels of CNTF in patients with severe motility abnormalities in comparison to the control group (p<0.05), but the difference between control group and infants with mild disorders hasn't reached the significance level. Moreover, we observed a significant increase of the serum concentration of CNTF in the study group after the treatment, but it remained lower in comparison to the control group. Conclusions: Our results suggest a relationship between the serum level of CNTF and the severity of the motor disorders in infants. Furthermore, our results show an augmentation of serum levels of CNTF after the administration of the CNTF medication. We suggest that CNTF has an important role in the survival of the motor neurons and the maintenance of the muscle fibers trophicity in infants with neurological problems. Further studies should investigate clinical aspects and prevention effects of neurotrophic factors in cerebral palsy.",

Method: A systematic search for papers investigating the relationship between motor and social skills was conducted, including research in typical development and in Developmental Coordination Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Specific Language Impairment. Results: The search identified 43 studies, many of which highlighted a significant relationship between motor skills and the development of social cognition, language and social interactions. Conclusions: This complex relationship requires more attention from researchers and practitioners, allowing the development of more tailored intervention techniques for those at risk of motor, social and language difficulties. 2014 Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.",

"abstractNote": "Difficulties with handwriting are reported as one of the main reasons for the referral of children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) to healthcare professionals. In a recent study we found that children with DCD produced less text than their typically developing (TD) peers and paused for 60% of a free-writing task. However, little is known about the nature of the pausing; whether they are long pauses possibly due to higher level processes of text generation or fatigue, or shorter pauses related to the movements between letters. This gap in the knowledge-base creates barriers to understanding the handwriting difficulties in children with DCD. The aim of this study was to characterise the pauses observed in the handwriting of English children with and without DCD. Twenty-eight 8-14 year-old children with a diagnosis of DCD participated in the study, with 28 TD age and gender matched controls. Participants completed the 10 min free-writing task from the Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting (DASH) on a digitising writing tablet. The total overall percentage of pausing during the task was categorised into four pause time-frames, each derived from the literature on writing (250 ms to 2 s; 2-4 s; 4-10 s and >10 s). In addition, the location of the pauses was coded (within word/between word) to examine where the breakdown in the writing process occurred. The results indicated that the main group difference was driven by more pauses above 10 s in the DCD group. In addition, the DCD group paused more within words compared to TD peers, indicating a lack of automaticity in their handwriting. These findings may support the provision of additional time for children with DCD in written examinations. More importantly, they emphasise the need for intervention in children with DCD to promote the acquisition of efficient handwriting skill. Copyright 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.. "abstractNote": "An established tool for the assessment of motor performance in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is the Movement-ABC-2 (M-ABC-2). The Zurich Neuromotor Assessment (ZNA) is also widely used for the evaluation of children's motor performance, but has not been compared with the M-ABC-2. Fifty-one children (39 males) between 5 and 7 years of age with suspected DCD were assessed using the M-ABC-2 and the ZNA. Rank correlations between scores of different test components were calculated. The structure of the tests was explored using canonical-correlation analysis. The correlation between total scores of the two motor tests was reasonable (0.66; p<0.001). However, ZNA scores were generally lower than those of M-ABC-2, due to poor performance in the fine motor adaptive component and increased contralateral associated movements (CAM). The canonical-correlation analysis revealed that ZNA measures components like pure motor skills and CAM that are not represented in the M-ABC-2. Furthermore, there was also no equivalent for the aiming and catching items of the M-ABC-2 in ZNA. The two tests measure different motor characteristics in children with suspected DCD and, thus, can be used complementary for the diagnosis of the disorder. Copyright 2014. "abstractNote": "Our objective was to examine the association of attention deficit and disorganization in boys with and without specific developmental disorder of motor function. Four groups of boys between the age of 7 and 12 years-(1) Disorganization + coordination disorder (n = 30); (2) Coordination disorder (n = 33); (3) Disorganization (n = 28); and (4) Control (n = 29)-were included. Teachers completed the Questionnaire for Assessing the Students' Organizational Abilities for the Teacher and the Conners' Teachers Rating Scale-Revised. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children and 2 subscales of an intelligence test (vocabulary and similarities) were administered. A significantly increased rate of attention deficit in children with organizational deficit was identified. Attention deficit in children with specific motor disorder was exclusively associated with an organizational deficit. Organizational deficit in childhood is highly associated with attention deficit, and this association is particularly relevant in children with specific coordination disorder.",
