"abstractNote": "In the past 20 years, China has seen the active redevelopment of old towns and construction of new towns around booming cities. Zhengdong New District is one of them. Zhengdong (150 sq km) is located in central China, and was planned by the Japanese architect, Kisho Kurokawa (1934–2007). After the plan was approved in 2001, Phase I of 33 sq km was constructed in 5 years with monumental buildings and grand plazas. Why did this foreign designed project receive tremendous support from the Chinese government during its planning and implementation? What are the problems of redeveloping new towns at such a fast pace? With these crucial policy and praxis questions, the authors studied the project on site and visited the stake-holders. This paper describes the birth of the plan and discusses how it was developed and nurtured into being by the various forces of government, developers and architects in the background of contemporary China. Through the process of development and construction in Zhengdong New District, the authors analyze the reasons behind the support and success of this unique planning phenomenon with strong Chinese characteristics.",

"abstractNote": "Planning in United States during the last forty years has focused more on the automobile usage and less on pedestrian movement. This approach has created an automobile dependent society where walking has become more and more difficult and unsafe. Today due to an increasing awareness on environmental issues and public health, people are realizing the negative consequence of their over automobile usage and have started to support walkable communities. Substantial research has been carried out on the importance of walking and on ways to create walkable neighborhoods. But have these researches found its way into the actual planning practice? How much have the local governments and practitioners adopted the current research on walkability to create a pedestrian friendly environment? This book is an effort to answer these questions. It uncovers the existing disparities between the research and the practicing world with respect to walkability. The analysis and recommendations provided in this book to improve the pedestrian environment should be of equal interest to planning students, practitioners and local planning agencies.",

"abstractNote": "Guangzhou has experienced a pattern of dual-track urbanization since economic reforms began in the 1980s. Industrialization and an increasing population have caused the city to relocate jobs and housing to the suburbs. Simultaneously, town governments have developed township and village enterprises (TVEs) and built affordable housing in villages. TVEs have become major industrial processing centers, and the towns that house them have seen the emergence of co-location effects whereby migrant workers become concentrated in urban villages and live near TVEs to optimize their commuting time. It is argued that these co-location adjustments are heavily influenced by institutional policies. This paper reports the results of two surveys, the first a questionnaire survey administered in Shijing Town and the second comprising a series of in-depth interviews carried out in two of Shijing’s urban villages. The results show that a high proportion of the respondents worked and lived in Shijing Town or one of the research villages. Most respondents spent a short time commuting to work. The results also suggest that the pattern of co-location among migrant workers and TVEs observed here reflects the desire to optimize commuting time. Some respondents noted that they had relocated to the research villages because they were ineligible to apply for public housing due to the hukou system.",

"abstractNote": "Research on Dubai has typically focused on the spectacular and the city’s rapid urban transformation. This study seeks to go beyond the city as spectacle by offering a detailed, empirical account of a street in one of its low-income districts, Hor Al Anz. The neighborhood is a locale for South-Asian migrant workers, for whom the street is the only recourse for public interaction. The street-corner in particular becomes a site for social gatherings, and thus provides a microcosm for the lives of these migrant workers. The study is set within a larger context of informal urbanism where city residents take matters into their own hand and begin to subvert established planning practices. Moreover, I am also providing a brief overview of Dubai’s urban development to contextualize the case study, in particular looking at immigration laws and the place accorded to such migrants. Census data and content analysis of media reports have been used in that regard. The study adopts a unique mapping methodology utilizing GIS technologies, behavioral mapping and videography. The result is a detailed portrayal of the street’s inner life. Through this, policy makers and urban planners would have at their disposal a much more nuanced and richer depictions of the lives of these migrant workers. Findings should lead to a more empathetic understanding of inhabitants’ lives and accordingly spaces and neighborhoods would be planned which are more responsive to their needs.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years, considerable interests in improved walking environments have been generated to encourage non-motorized transportation modes to reduce pollution emissions and to improve public health. The transit-oriented development (TOD) model has become one of the effective priority solutions. TOD planning gives us an idea that urban design factors and a pedestrian-friendly design are positive planning factors in reducing automobile use through the reduction of automobile traffic speed and enhancing pedestrian accessibility to a transit center. To investigate the pedestrian needs and the walkability design for TOD is the aim for aiding in identifying an approach that would allow an appropriate assessment of the walking environment and justification for improvements.\n\nThe purpose of this study is to improve and enhance the city design of the pedestrian space in a city. Furthermore, we hope to meet the needs of users and utilize the existing resources in order to achieve the maximum benefits. To solve this complex problem, we apply multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) technique to the specific problem. Using the top down and bottom up together technique named house of quality (HOQ) matrix combined with analytic network process (ANP), we can realize the relationships between the technical requirements and the pedestrian needs of the planning and design issues of the walkability under the transit-oriented development. In this way, we can establish an objective and effective urban pedestrian space design model. Finally, in order to illustrate the research problem more practically, we take the MRT station of Xindian in New Taipei City, Taiwan as the empirical example.",

"abstractNote": "ABSTRACT There is a certain optimism among policy makers concerning the ability of producer services, viewed as locationally flexible, to stimulate economic growth in lagging regions. Four issues related to the location of producer services are used to critically examine this notion: (1) observed centralization and decentralisation trends. (2) the influence of corporate ownership and control, (3) intrafirm functional separation, and (4) the impact of telecommunications technology. Producer service growth has not benefited central and peripheral regions equally. The empirical and conceptual evidence presented suggests that these activities have little positive impact upon lagging regions. Some essential elements of a regional strategy involving producer services are proposed.",

Irvine-Minnesota Inventory (IMI) walkability audits showed that new urban blocks provided more traffic safety, pleasurability, crime safety, density, and diversity. New urban routes offered greater traffic safety, accessibility, pleasurability, crime safety, and diversity, but suburban routes had greater housing density, net of controls (parental education, rooms in the home, home ownership, parent preference for child to walk to school). Parents and children perceived new urban routes to be more walkable and children walked more when they lived on more walkable routes. The suburban hierarchical street design exposed children to varied traffic safety conditions by funneling their walks from cul-de-sacs to arterials. The new urban routes to a centrally located school passed by pleasant open spaces, suggesting how community organization can create better walking conditions.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents an artificial intelligence approach integrated with geographical information systems (GISs) for modeling urban evolution. Fuzzy logic and neural networks are used to provide a synthetic spatiotemporal methodology for the analysis, prediction and interpretation of urban growth. The proposed urban model takes into account the changes over time in population and building use patterns. A GIS is used for handling the spatial and temporal data, performing contingency analysis and mapping the results. Spatial entities with similar characteristics are grouped together in clusters by the use of a fuzzy c-means algorithm. Each cluster represents a specific level of urban growth and development. A two-layer feed-forward multilayer perceptron artificial neural network is then used to predict urban growth. The model, applied to the prefecture of Attica, Greece, delineates the current and future evolution trends of the Athens metropolitan area, which are illustrated by maps of the urban growth dynamics. The proposed methodology aims to assist planners and decision makers in gaining insight into the transition from rural to urban.",

"abstractNote": "This article develops a rapid response ridership forecast model, based on the combined use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), distance-decay functions and multiple regression models. The number of passengers boarding at each station in the Madrid Metro network is estimated as a function of the characteristics of the stations (type, number of lines, accessibility within the network, etc.) and of the areas they serve (population and employment characteristics, land-use mix, street density, presence of feeder modes, etc.). The paper considers the need to evaluate the distance threshold used (not the choice of a fixed distance threshold by assimilation from other studies), the distance calculation procedure (network distance versus straight-line distance) and, above all, the use of distance-decay weighted regression (so that the data from the bands nearer the stations have a greater weighting in the model than those farther away). Analyses carried out show that weighting the variables according to the distance-decay functions provides systematically better results. The choice of distance threshold also significantly improves outcomes. When an all-or-nothing function is used, the way the service area is calculated (straight-line or network distances) does not seem to have a decisive influence on the results. However, it seems to be more influential when distance-decay weighting is used.",

"abstractNote": "As large cities seek to expand their transit systems to accommodate increasing travel demand, provide alternatives to growing road traffic congestion, and improve accessibility, more research attention has been focused on the land use effects of transit, most notably in the form of transit-oriented development (TOD). Many cities in the USA are starting or expanding rail transit systems with objectives that include more focused economic development near transit stations and along transit corridors. Denver, Colorado is one of the cities that is aggressively expanding its rail transit system and encouraging high-density, mixed-use development in the station areas. This study analyzes TOD data from the Denver Regional Transportation District and the Denver Regional Council of Governments for 0.5-mile areas around current and proposed rail transit stations. Early evidence indicates that the scope of transit-oriented development in Denver is considerable, resulting in nearly 18,000 residential dwelling units, 5.3 million square feet of retail space, 5.4 million square feet of office space, and 6.2 million square feet of medical space within one-half mile of existing or planned transit stations from 1997 to 2010. As one of the critical elements of the regional land use and transportation plan, the rail transit system and the emphasis on transit-oriented development is contributing to an increase in the average density of the Denver urbanized area.",

"abstractNote": "This study examined the reliability and validity of the interviewer-administered Chinese version of the abbreviated Neighbourhood Environment Walkability Scale (Chinese NEWS-A). One hundred and twenty-four Chinese-speaking adult residents of Hong Kong were recruited from neighbourhoods objectively differing in walkability (dwelling density and street connectivity) and socio-economic status (SES). They completed the interviewer-administered Chinese NEWS-A, and half of them were reassessed 7–10 days later. The Chinese NEWS-A had good test–retest-reliability. Residents of high walkable neighbourhoods reported higher residential density, land use mix, street connectivity, infrastructure and safety for walking but lower levels of traffic load, and fewer cul-de-sacs and hilly streets. Residents of higher SES areas reported higher aesthetics but less traffic and crime. Overall, this study lends support for the construct validity and reliability of the Chinese NEWS-A. It is concluded that this instrument can be used in cross-national studies of the effect of the built environment on residents’ walking.",

"abstractNote": "Through Paris, New York City, Toronto, North Vancouver, and Singapore, this examination depicts how the architectural evolutions of major cities have changed the lives of their ordinary citizens—in both positive and negative ways. According to this account, making a metropolis navigable by foot again is crucial, and it suggests how people can reorganize their personal lives in order to make this possible again. From Baron George Eugene Haussmann and his ruthless transformation of Paris to the redevelopment of North America to adapt to automobiles, this chronicle investigates the dramatic changes that have occurred in the past 200 years, providing a valuable critique of the ideas regarding how cities should be designed.",

"abstractNote": "Elderly fall has become an issue of great public health concern and typically important to the aging population in Hong Kong because it carries a great burden to the individuals and the society. More accurate information about environmental risk factors to falls among the elderly could alleviate if not overcome the situation. Conventional approaches to elderly falls were mainly conducted using statistical methods and clinical tests on falls. This study employs ecological and associative analysis using the geographic information systems (GIS) technology to visualize spatial association of falls and environmental factors. The study identified eleven hot spots of elderly falls with unique environmental characteristics. Amongst various environmental attributes, busy streets and junctions, outdoor markets, and refuse collection points, exhibit a strong spatial relationship with the hot spots. The results have demonstrated that GIS can offer an excellent synergic platform to explore the role of space and pattern in fall occurrences.",

To meet this often overlooked need, we apply a newly developed extension to the Hausman-Taylor model that treats multiple housing transactions occurring in a spatial location as a panel. This methodology allows us to account for omitted variables within a subdivision while instrumenting for variables identified through differences between subdivisions. We measure capitalization of open space at three distinct spatial extents: adjacency, walkability, and subdivision-wide. We find that the interactions between subdivision open space and private open space in the form of lot size change from complementarity at small scales to substitutability at large scales. These results confirm much of the intuition developed by ecologists and public planners on the likely service flows associated with open space and show how our approach to accounting for multiple spatial scales of capitalization in the evaluation of non-market goods could be beneficial to other areas of applied research.",

"abstractNote": "Despite emerging evidence about the association between the built environment and travel behavior, the relationship between bus transit demand and urban form remains largely unexplored. By relying on primary and secondary data analyzed with a geographic information system, this paper examines the built environment characteristics related to stop-level ridership for Bogotá’s successful bus rapid transit system. After accounting experimentally and statistically for the simultaneity between transit supply, transit demand, and the built environment, we find evidence of the importance of the built environment in BRT station boardings. Specifically, environmental supports for walking and personal and environmental barriers to car use were related to higher BRT boardings. Our results underscore the importance of urban environmental interventions to support transit use.",
