In 1840, Lord Durham assumed 'Canadians' were French-speaking farmers, but by 1885 British colonists in the newly created Dominion of Canada had claimed the term 'Canadian' for themselves. This dissertation traces the discursive practices by which the transformation from canadien to 'Canuck' was effected. Using visual images as primary documents, this study looks at the ways in which British colonists represented themselves as native Canadians in sport, visual culture and public spectacles in order to construct and define a national identity which would distinguish them from both British and Americans. The central argument made is that Native and French-Canadian cultural activities such as snowshoeing, tobogganing, lacrosse, and hunting were appropriated and transformed by the professional and commercial middle classes in mid-Victorian Montreal. By appropriating these indigenous activities, and imposing on them British ideologies of order, discipline and fair play, English speaking Montrealers not only claimed distinctive visual attributes for themselves, but, in addition, the performance of these activities indigenised them through physical interaction with the environment, thus legitimizing their claim to be 'native-Canadian'. Since identity is not just embodied and enacted by individuals, but needs to be performed and acclaimed, the means by which the proposed national identity was transmitted and displayed in public spectacles, are also examined. Through the display of hunting photographs at international exhibitions, through tours abroad by lacrosse teams, illustrations of the North West Rebellion, and owing to the central role played by the snowshoe clubs in the Montreal Winter Carnivals in the 1880s, a particular image of Canadian identity was widely propagated. However, this image of an elite, white, male who possessed the robust physical health conferred by a pure, northern climate and love of vigorous outdoor sports, effectively marginalised women and working people. Specifically, it utilises a case study of basketball to address the issues surrounding the juncture between local cultural identities, sport and global processes: the local-global sports nexus. Characteristic of globalisation processes are the activities of sports-related transnational corporations (TNCs) in global markets. The presence of such TNCs raises questions regarding the juncture with ostensibly indigenous cultures and identities associated with sport. The thesis constitutes several interlocking components which seek to address the multi-faceted nature of the local-global basketball interplay. First, a review of literature details both the political-economic context of the development of 'indigenous' English basketball, and the interdependencies surrounding National Basketball Association (NBA) expansion to Britain. Second, media representation within the local-global interplay is addressed in a comparative textual analysis of NBA and indigenous game coverage on British television. It is argued that local and global basketball are represented in a varying manner, which reinforces a local-global basketball hierarchy. Third, a two season multi-method ethnographic case study, incorporating: participant observations, interviews, a questionnaire and focus groups explored the consumption of 'local' basketball. The findings reveal complex responses and engagement with global processes, contextualised by the heterogenous nature of basketball fandom. Specifically, local identifies and affiliations, while associated with consumption, also mediate broader global processes. By the 1880s, nonreservation federal boarding schools became the educational method of choice. The American Southwest became a focal point for these boarding schools, and New Mexico began two boarding schools in Albuquerque and Santa Fe by 1890. Daily life in these boarding schools was rigorous and included severe living conditions, harsh manual labor, and the ongoing process of adopting a foreign way of life. Extracurricular activities slowly emerged amidst these stressors. Though students could choose from various activities, athletics prominently emerged. From makeshift teams hastily scheduled by the players in the early 1890s to consistent district and even state championships in numerous sports throughout the 1930s, athletics developed into an integral part of school life at the Albuquerque and Santa Fe Indian Schools. American Indian participation in boarding school athletics provides insight into the Americanizing process that Indians experienced from 1885-1940. Indians were not alone in their struggle to maintain a sense of ethnic identity within the assimilation policies designed to strip them of their heritage, nor were they the only group that used sport to negotiate their transition into American society. Similar to other American ethnic and immigrant groups, Indian students quickly found an avenue through sport to negotiate the assimilation process. Athletics mitigated the assimilation process for these Indian students and provided meaningful experiences within the boarding schools. In their athletic participation, Indian boarding school students learned about being both American and Indian. Africa's recent economic performance is a reflection of the policies it has pursued since the 1960s. It summarises the progress of sub-Saharan African countries with a view to\nproviding a clearer understanding of the constraints they face in reaching the goals, with a special focus on the economic, poverty, education, and health targets. The paper also outlines the urgency for action at the national, regional, and international levels. It also demonstrates that the economic and social recovery that Africa experienced in the late 1990s cannot be sustained unless there is progress towards the goals.
