"abstractNote": "Hailed by The Financial Times as \"the most prominent and influential theorist and analyst of the modern communications and network age,\" Manuel Castells here offers a ground-breaking account of the modern communication revolution, a dramatic transformation of technology--and of the signals we receive--that is changing the way we feel, think, and behave. And that, writes Castells, is creating a revolution in power.\n\nWith his landmark trilogy, The Information Age, Castells offered one of the first comprehensive analyses of how the Internet was creating a networked society. Now he draws on neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and case histories from around the world to explore the psychology of decision making in the new communications environment, highlighting the rise of communication power. He ranges widely, exploring global media deregulation, the misinformation that surrounded the invasion of Iraq, environmental movements, the role of the Internet in the Obama presidential campaign, and media control in Russia and China. In a network society, he writes, politics is fundamentally media politics--and the politics of scandal is its epitome. That fact is behind a worldwide crisis of political legitimacy that challenges the meaning of democracy in much of the world. More fundamentally, Castells argues, the Internet's instant messaging, social networking, and blogging have given rise a new communication system, mass self-communication, that is profoundly altering power relationships.\n\nDeeply researched, far-reaching in scope, and incisively argued, Communication Power offers a profound new understanding of implications of the information revolution.\n\n\"Castells has done it again, a masterpiece of global perspective and enviable erudition.\"\n--W. Russell Neuman, Evans Professor of Media Technology, University of Michigan\n\n\"A powerful and much needed book for a world in crisis.\"\n--Antonio Damasio, Director, Brain and Creativity Institute, University of Southern California",

Rubbing two sticks together produces heat and light; one stick alone is just a stick. In both cases, it is friction that produces movement, action, effect. Challenging the widespread view that globalization invariably signifies a \"clash\" of cultures, anthropologist Anna Tsing here develops friction in its place as a metaphor for the diverse and conflicting social interactions that make up our contemporary world.\n\nShe focuses on one particular \"zone of awkward engagement\"--the rainforests of Indonesia--where in the 1980s and the 1990s capitalist interests increasingly reshaped the landscape not so much through corporate design as through awkward chains of legal and illegal entrepreneurs that wrested the land from previous claimants, creating resources for distant markets. In response, environmental movements arose to defend the rainforests and the communities of people who live in them. Not confined to a village, a province, or a nation, the social drama of the Indonesian rainforest includes local and national environmentalists, international science, North American investors, advocates for Brazilian rubber tappers, UN funding agencies, mountaineers, village elders, and urban students, among others--all combining in unpredictable, messy misunderstandings, but misunderstandings that sometimes work out.\n\nProviding a portfolio of methods to study global interconnections, Tsing shows how curious and creative cultural differences are in the grip of worldly encounter, and how much is overlooked in contemporary theories of the global.",

The first part defines the issue of multi-lingual video in the context of social movement and activism-related literature. The second part lists practice-based research initiatives that could be used to support multi-lingual video use for activism. I have chosen to upload this because multi-lingual communication and activism is a new area for me but I expect it will be a core focus of my work over the next few years. \n\nGiven its relevance to activism and citizen journalism, I hope to have discussions on this topic at our workshop. Your feedback and inputs (and potential collaboration!) would be extremely appreciated. Thanks, Tanya",

"abstractNote": "Media policy plays a prominent role in nation-building, but context determines whether policymakers view that\nrole as a positive or negative one. In Jordan, the press’s critiques of the government’s diplomatic outreach toward\nIsrael resulted in proscriptions on, and imprisonment for, any reporting that “harmed national unity.” In Rwanda,\nwhere decade-old genocidal rants read over the radio airwaves still ring in survivors’ ears, any discussion of ethnic\nstrife or mention of Hutus and Tutsis leads to charges of divisionism. By taking stock of each country’s\ncontemporary history, this article considers the ways in which freedom of expression is contested, shaped, and\ndefined by recent developments. A country’s media can be more or less “free,” but without a proper understanding\nof that country’s history, debate over its media policy is necessarily incomplete. One issue for developing countries\nand the scholars who study them is the degree to which context and history are being used to justify the suppression\nof legitimate speech, open debate, and a properly functioning media space. Another is whether a relative\nconceptualization of freedom of expression can be squared with what U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O.\nDouglas called free speech’s “high purposes”: inviting dispute, creating dissatisfaction with the status quo, and\nmoving its listeners to anger and action.",

The report provides an overview on the political usages of ditigal media in Pakistan. It is argued that Pakistan needs an open debate on the country’s future and identity in order to counter extremist ideas and reach an authentic discourse on democracy and human rights. Digital media may support this process by giving room to underreported topics and critical discussions. For some layers of civil society these media have already opened up a space for debate and civic engagement.",

"abstractNote": "Based on a survey of participants in Egypt's Tahrir Square protests, we demonstrate that social media in general, and Facebook in particular, provided new sources of information the regime could not easily control and were crucial in shaping how citizens made individual decisions about participating in protests, the logistics of protest, and the likelihood of success. We demonstrate that people learned about the protests primarily through interpersonal communication using Facebook, phone contact, or face-to-face conversation. Controlling for other factors, social media use greatly increased the odds that a respondent attended protests on the first day. Half of those surveyed produced and disseminated visuals from the demonstrations, mainly through Facebook.",
