In concentrations ranging from 2.48×10−4 up to 2.85&amp;#xa0;10−3&amp;#xa0;M the additive was able to increase the solution critical supersaturation (up to 8%) resulting in a significant crystallization inhibition effect, which promoted efflorescence growth on the porous stone surface as opposed to subflorescence growth. The former induced no damage to the stone support while the latter always resulted in crystallization pressure development inside the pores, causing granular disintegration—a process also known as “salt weathering”. Significant changes in NaCl crystal growth morphology (from {1&amp;#xa0;0&amp;#xa0;0} towards {1&amp;#xa0;1&amp;#xa0;0}, {1&amp;#xa0;1&amp;#xa0;1} and {2&amp;#xa0;1&amp;#xa0;0} forms) were observed in the presence of ferrocyanide ions, which also promoted the growth of dendrites with their main growth axis parallel to 〈1&amp;#xa0;1&amp;#xa0;1〉, and branched along 〈1&amp;#xa0;0&amp;#xa0;0〉, at the highest supersaturation. The possible inhibiting mechanism of ferrocyanide on NaCl crystallization and growth is discussed based on the evolution of NaCl growth morphologies, and some practical applications of ferrocyanides to prevent salt damage and enhance desalination in ornamental stones are outlined. </p>",

            "abstractNote": "The crack resistance of three different PVD coatings, TiN, Ti(C,N), and a multilayer system of alternating TiN and TiAlN, have been investigated. The three coating systems were deposited onto substrates with a different surface roughness to study the influence of this pretreatment on the crack resistance of the coatings. First, the microstructure and state of stress of the three PVD systems were detd. using X-ray diffraction and SEM. Then the coatings are loaded in tension in an ESEM to carry out in situ bending expts., to assess the crack resistance of the layers. Studying the results of the bending expts. in relation to the characteristic properties of the coatings shows that the compressive residual stresses have a large influence on the moment the first cracks arise. After the initiation of the first crack, the crack resistance of TiN, deposited on the smoothest substrate, is much better than that of TiN/TiAlN and Ti(C,N). Increasing the interface roughness for the Ti(C,N) and the TiN/TiAlN results in an increased crack resistance. For the coatings deposited on the roughest substrates, the crack resistance is, approx., the same for the three different systems. Spallation of the coatings also has been obsd. but does not occur frequently.",

            "abstractNote": "Antiparallel ferroelectric domains in LiTaO3 single crystal can be directly imaged by using environmental scanning electron microscopy in secondary electron emission mode. Because the observation was performed at a water vapor atmosphere (wet mode), the sample surface was free from charging, therefore, no surface treatment was required. The image of domains can be seen for several hours. The technique may be extended to study domain structures in other ferroelectric crystals and ceramics.",

            "abstractNote": "The YZS soil stabilizer (developed by authors) was used for solidification of natural saline soil in Ge Ermu, Qinghai Province. Alteration in mech. property of solidified soil after wetting-drying cycles was investigated. The microstructure of both core and outer part of the damaged solidified soil body was characterized by means of ESEM and mercury intrusion method. The failure mechanism of solidified soil in compression or split test was discussed. The results showed that the unconfined compressive strength of the soil body increased and its splitting strength decreased after wetting-drying cycles, which was resulted from the fact that the core of soil body was intensified and its outer part was weakened by wetting-drying process. Therefore, the compressive strength could hardly reveal the damaging effect from wetting-drying process on solidified soil body, but conversely splitting strength could do it. [on SciFinder (R)]",

            "abstractNote": "Relative content of 12 kinds of elements in Viburnum macrocephalum Fort. f. keteleeri pollen in Yangzhou city, Slim West Lake and Yangzhou university were analyzed with ESEM and X-ray EDS. The results showed that the content of some elements in Yangzhou city was higher than that in Slim West Lake, among which the content of Pb, Hg and S was 127%, 115% and 120% resp. However, the content of some elements in Yangzhou city was relatively lower than that in Slim West Lake, such as Cu and K with the value of 82% Cu and 85% K. The content of the other elements showed little difference between the sites investigated. In Yangzhou university the content of some elements was similar to that in Slim West Lake while the content of S, Pb, Cu, K and Ca were relatively higher with their value of 114% 103%, 101%, 114%, 128% resp. The results presented here indicate that this plant species can be used as a model plant to determinate the city pollution using X-ray EDS anal. [on SciFinder (R)]",

            "abstractNote": "Since rubber was applied in people's normal life, researchers have started to exploit the rubber reinforcing techniques and the relative mechanism. Developing high-effective, simple and economical reinforcing methods and fillers are the emphasis of rubber industry, technol. and science. In this paper a rubber ideal filler (IF) is shown. This IF is a kind of composite with core-shell structure which was synthesized by seeded emulsion polymn. It used styrene (St), polybutadiene oligomer (PBD) as monomers and divinyl benzene (DVB) as crosslinking agent. The effect of the amt. of crosslinking agent, concn. of emulsifier and initiator on the stability of the emulsion was studied. The morphol. of the latex particles with core-shell structure was characterized by high resoln. SEM (ESEM) and DSC (Tg).
