"abstractNote": "The word “superstition” appears lately in China. Before 1990, the\nfrequency of its appearance was low, largely referred to the supernatural\nbeings or religions. However, the times of its appearance have obviously\nincreased and its meanings have been extended and become more\nabundant since 1902. The meanings of the word include not only the\nsupernatural beings or religious beliefs, but the unconfirmed worship.\nThe statistics show that there are two climates in terms of the times of\nusing the word. One occurs from 1902 to 1905 and the other from 1915\nto 1921. The Confucianism as the core value in the traditional Chinese\nsociety functioned as the substitution for the religion, which caused the\nidea of the superstition related to the religion occur less frequently. After\nnineteenth century, due to the strong military and economic invasion of\nthe west, the China could not resist beginning to adopt the technology\nand the institution from the west, which the science was also introduced\nat that time. “The religion” (representing the word entry) began to be noticed because of being opposed to “the science” (representing the word\nentry). This phenomenon caused the word “superstition” to be popular and\nused widely. Nevertheless, with the ideology of New Culture Movement\nbeing shifted to embracing the science and democracy from applying the\nwestern science and technology on the basis of the Chinese traditional\nstandards⬚⬚Zhong Xue Wei Ti, Xi Xue Wei Yong ⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚⬚, the\nConfucianism, which was originally against superstition, was changed into\nsignifying the superstition. This change of the ideology is enough to reveal\nthat the intellectuals had the absolutely different concepts with respect to the\nConfucianism. By means of the investigation of the word “superstition” on\nthe different contexts, it is concretely shown how the ideology in the New\nCultural Movement was changed.\nKeywords: superstition, science, religion, Confucianism",

"abstractNote": "Languages continually enrich themselves and other languages with\nconcepts they exchange. While not a modern phenomenon, denser and\nfaster communication during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has\nresulted in a large-scale homogenization of the newly-emerged national\nlanguages around a core of globalized concepts with a modern order and\nhierarchy. The common features of these concepts are hidden below the\nlinguistic surface of the respective languages, with most speakers being\ngenerally unaware of their existence. As concepts are abstract and therefore\nunable to guide action in time and space directly, recourse is generally\ntaken to metaphor and simile. These in turn lend themselves to visual\nrepresentations such as political cartoons.\nThis article investigates the migration of such metaphors and their\nvisualized forms across languages and cultures. It will focus on the\nmetaphor of “China asleep/China awakened”, which became common\nparlance during the nineteenth century and has remained in the global\nmetaphorical canon to this day. The article addresses the dynamics of this\nhighly asymmetrical translingual and transcultural migration, the cultural\nbrokers involved, as well as the contact zones where the exchanges take place.\nKeywords: metaphors, asymmetry, transcultural, cartoons, politics,\nlinguistics",

Taking readers from ancient Rome to today, Helena Rosenblatt traces the evolution of the words \"liberal\" and \"liberalism,\" revealing the heated debates that have taken place over their meaning. In this timely and provocative book, Rosenblatt debunks the popular myth of liberalism as a uniquely Anglo-American tradition centered on individual rights. It was only during the Cold War and America's growing world hegemony that liberalism was refashioned into an American ideology focused so strongly on individual freedoms.\"--",

"abstractNote": "This article intends to clarify what distinguishes the so-called new “politico-intellectual history” from the old “history of political ideas.” What differentiates the two has not been fully perceived even by some of the authors who initiated this transformation. One fundamental reason for this is that the transformation has not been a consistent process deriving from one single source, but is rather the result of converging developments emanating from three different sources (the Cambridge School, the German school of conceptual history or Begriffsgeschichte, and French politico-conceptual history). This article proposes that the development of a new theoretical horizon that effectively leads us beyond the frameworks of the old history of political ideas demands that we overcome the insularity of these traditions and combine their respective contributions. The result of this combination is an approach to politico-intellectual history that is not completely coincident with any of the three schools. What I will call a history of political languages entails a specific perspective on the temporality of discourses; this involves a view of why the meaning of concepts changes over time, and is the source of the contingency that stains political languages.",

"abstractNote": "Conceptual history is a useful tool for writing the history of emotions. The investigation of how a community used emotion words at certain times and in certain places allows us to understand specific emotion knowledge without being trapped by universalism. But conceptual history is also an inadequate tool for writing the history of emotions. Its exclusive focus on language fails to capture the meanings that can be derived from emotional expressions in other media such as painting, music, architecture, film, or even food. Here emotion history can contribute to a rethinking of conceptual history, bringing the body and the senses back in. This article proposes a theoretical model to expand conceptual history beyond language by exploring three processes of emotional translation: First, how the translation between reality and its interpretation is mediated by the body and the senses. Second, how translations between different media and sign systems shape and change the meanings of concepts. Third, how concepts translate into practices that have an impact on reality. The applicability of the model is not limited to the research on concepts of emotion; the article argues that emotions have a crucial role in all processes of conceptual change. The article further suggests that historicizing concepts can best be achieved by reconstructing the relations that actors have created between elements within multimedial semantic nets. The approach will be exemplified by looking at the South Asian concept of the monsoon and the emotional translations between rain and experiences of love and romance.",

There are even signs that intellectual historians are returning to the longue dure´e. What are the reasons for this revival of long-range intellectual history? And how might it be rendered methodologically robust as well as historically compelling? This article proposes a model of transtemporal history, proceeding via serial contextualism to create a history in ideas spanning centuries, even millennia: key examples come from work in progress on ideas of civil war from ancient Rome to the present. The article concludes with brief reflections on the potential impact of the digital humanities on the practice of long-range intellectual history.",

"abstractNote": "Guenther Roth once called Max Weber ‘the would-be Englishman’. The characterization can be extended to Weber’s admiration for the Westminster Parliament and its political practices. Later German scholars have disputed the accuracy of Weber’s interpretation of British parliamentarism, claiming it was distorted by his critique of the contemporary German situation. The author’s thesis is that Weber well understood the Westminster practices, while his critics misunderstood in particular his distinction between ‘working’ and ‘talking’ parliaments (Arbeitsparlament vs. Redeparlament). German political scientists of the post-war era have neglected the Westminster tradition of parliamentary committees and reduced parliamentarism to a system of government, whereas for Weber it still refers to a political culture of debate.",
