"abstractNote": "To investigate the behavior of mechanomyogram (MMG) and electromyogram (EMG) signals in the time and frequency domains during sustained isometric contraction, MMG and surface EMG were obtained simultaneously from four muscles: upper trapezius (TP), anterior deltoid (DL), biceps brachii (BB), and brachioradialis (BR) of 10 healthy male subjects. Experimental conditions consisted of 27 combinations of 9 postures [3 shoulder angles (SA): 0°, 30°, 60° and 3 elbow angles (EA): 120°, 90°, 60°] and 3 contraction levels: 20%, 40%, and 60% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Subjective evaluations of fatigue were also assessed using the Borg scale at intervals of 60, 30, and 10 sec at 20%, 40%, and 60% MVC tests, respectively. The mean power frequency (MPF) and root mean square (RMS) of both signals were calculated. The current study found clear and significant relationships among physiological and psychological parameters on the one hand and SA and EA on the other. EA's effect on MVC was found to be significant. SA had a highly significant effect on both endurance time and Borg scale. In all experimental conditions, significant correlations were found between the changes in MPF and RMS of EMG in BB with SA and EA (or muscle length). In all four muscles, MMG frequency content was two or three times lower than EMG frequency content. During sustained isometric contraction, the EMG signal showed the well-known shift to lower frequencies (a continuous decrease from onset to completion of the contraction). In contrast, the MMG spectra did not show any shift, although its form changed (generally remaining about constant). Throughout the contraction, increased RMS of EMG was found for all tests, whereas in the MMG signal, a significant progressive increase in RMS was observed only at 20% MVC in all four muscles. This supports the hypothesis that the RMS amplitude of the MMG signal produced during contraction is highly correlated with force production. Possible explanations for this behavioral difference between the MMG and EMG signals are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "The influence of hand tool weight and arm position on shoulder muscle load was studied by electromyography. The investigation was made to facilitate recommendations on work place design. The aim is to reduce the occurrence of occupational shoulder disorders in industry. Nine volunteers held 21 different arm positions with the hand over waist level. In each position, the hand was loaded with 0, 1, and 2 kg. Each load was maintained for 15 s. The myoelectric activity in six shoulder muscles was recorded and analyzed automatically with respect to the amplitude. The results indicate that the degree of upper arm elevation is the most important parameter influencing shoulder muscle load. Short rotator muscles stabilizing the shoulder joint were found to be more hand-load dependent than the deltoid muscle. The ergonomic implications of this study are that work situations should be designed so that the arm can be kept close to the body and the hand load minimized.",

"abstractNote": "In order to relate EMG signs of localized muscle fatigue to subjectively perceived muscle fatigue, a study was undertaken on 20 healthy volunteers exposing their right trapezius muscle by raising the arm to 90° of abduction. Every person performed two contractions: 0 kg hand load during 5 min and 2 kg hand load during 2.5 min. Surface EMG was recorded and analysed with respect to RMS amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF). Subjective muscle fatigue was estimated with a psychophysical rating scale (Borg's CR-10 Scale). At high load level we found a significant correlation between MPF and the CR-scores (r = − 0.46), but at low load level there was no correlation. At high load level there was a linear decrease of MPF with increasing load dose, but at low load level the MPF did not change, despite significant subjective fatigue. There was a linear rise of the CR-score with increasing load dose, more pronounced at high load level. It was concluded, that at low load levels common in working life, MPF and subjective scores seem to provide different fatigue information. Moreover, the MPF did not seem to work as a valid estimator of muscle fatigue at this low load level. Caution is recommended if it is to be used in static low-load situations.",

"abstractNote": "The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between a fatigue-induced increase of perceived exertion in the neck with a decrease of mean power frequency (MPF) in the surface electromyography (sEMG) signal during repeated shoulder elevation endurance tasks. About Thirty-two healthy women (age range 20-62) performed two maximum 6-min shoulder elevation endurance tasks at 30% of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) level, separated by a rest of 6 min. During these exercises, perceived exertion was estimated using the Borg scale (range 0-10), whereas the MPF of the sEMG signal from the upper trapezius was simultaneously detected. Linear regression analysis was applied over time for each trial and subject for both MPF and Borg scale rating values. The MPF was normalized by the intercept of the linear regression analysis. The resulting slopes of normalized mean power frequency (nMPF) and Borg scale rating were correlated with each other by linear regression for both trials. In order to investigate the individual behavior of fatigue effects between trials, Delta (trial 2-trial 1) slopes of nMPF and Borg scale ratings were calculated for each subject. These slopes of nMPF and Borg scale ratings were correlated with each other as well by linear regression. The increase of Borg scale ratings, as well as the decrease of nMPF, were significantly higher in trial 2 than trial 1 (P<0.01). The results show a linear correlation between slopes of nMPF and Borg scale ratings for both trials 1 and 2 (r=0.76, P<0.01). Trial-to-trial slopes (Delta (trial 2-trial 1)) of nMPF and Borg scale rating, were also significantly correlated (r=0.68, P<0.05). Thus, the individually sensed increase of perceived exertion in the neck during trial 2 was accompanied by a simultaneously higher detected decrease of nMPF. These findings indicate a close relationship between subjective perception of exertion in the neck and objectively assessed muscle fatigue of the upper trapezius.",

"abstractNote": "OBJECTIVE: To investigate the numerical relationship between the changes of surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal indexes and subjective assessment of muscle fatigue during isometric contractions.\nMETHOD: Eleven healthy subjects participated in the experiment. The sEMG signals of biceps were recorded during their sustained isometric contractions at 50% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Fatigue was subjectively rated using a Borg CR-10 scale. Correlations between Borg ratings and a series of fatigue-related indexes such as MPF, MF and Lempel-ziv complexity were analyzed, and curve estimation was also explored.\nRESULT: A strong positive correlation was found between Borg ratings and endurance time, and negative correlations at different degrees were found between Borg ratings and each of sEMG signal indexes. Curve estimation (Logarithmic curve and Power curve) was also significant.\nCONCLUSION: The significant correlation between the Borg scale, sEMG signal indexes and endurance time indicates a close relationship between subjective and objective assessment of muscle fatigue. The numerical relationship between them accord with the power law of Stevens in psychophysics relatively.",

"abstractNote": "BACKGROUND: Various test methods which engage the back muscles in different tasks have been used in studies of back muscle fatigue with electromyography. The present objective was to study task dependency in lumbar muscle fatigue by comparing two test methods.\nMETHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 22 healthy subjects performed a seated (45s) and a prone test (to the limit of endurance) of back muscle fatigue in randomised order. Fatigue of the lumbar muscles was assessed using electromyography spectral variables and ratings of back muscle fatigue (Borg scale). Linear regression of the median frequency during contraction, and conventional statistical tests of group differences and correlations were used.\nFINDINGS: Significant differences (P<0.001) between the seated and the prone test were found for the initial median frequency, the slope, the median frequency decrease during the whole contraction, and for the ratings. However, correlation coefficients between the seated and the prone test were low for the median frequency decrease (r=0.42), absent for the slopes of median frequency (r=-0.08), higher for the Borg ratings (r(s)=0.51; P<0.05) and highest for the initial median frequency (r=0.69; P<0.05). Within each test, correlations between the Borg ratings and the electromyography variables were essentially absent (r<0.19).\nINTERPRETATION: Electromyography variables assessed in one type of task in a fatiguing test may not be valid for other types of fatiguing tasks, for example in daily life work situations. Thus task dependency has to be considered when using surface electromyography in determining lumbar muscle fatigue. Ratings of fatigue, however, seem to be less task dependent than the electromyography variables.",

"abstractNote": "Quantifying muscle force and fatigue is important in designing ergonomic work stations, in planning appropriate work-rest patterns, and in preventing/assessing the progress of disorders. In 14 subjects (seven males, seven females), muscle force and fatigue were estimated by subjective perception (based on Borg scale CR10) and objective indexes extracted from surface electromyogram (EMG). The experimental protocol consisted of an isometric task selective for the upper trapezius muscle at different force levels (10-80% of maximal voluntary contraction--MVC, in steps of 10%MVC) and one fatiguing contraction (constant force level at 50%MVC until exhaustion). Surface EMG signals were detected by a two-dimensional (2D) array of electrodes placed half way between C7 and the acromion. The following variables were calculated from EMG signals: muscle fibre conduction velocity (CV), root mean square value (RMS), mean frequency of the power spectrum (MNF), fractal dimension (FD), and entropy. All detected signals were also used to build topographical maps of RMS. Both subjective and objective indications of force and fatigue can provide information on exerted force and endurance time (ET). In particular, Borg ratings, RMS, and entropy were significantly related to force, and the rate of change of CV, MNF, FD, and Borg ratings were predictive of the endurance time. Moreover, significant differences were found in Borg ratings between males and females. The correlation coefficient of pairs of topographical maps of RMS was high (of the order of 0.8). This reflects a characteristic spatial-temporal recruitment of upper trapezius motor units that is not affected by force levels or fatigue.",
