"abstractNote": "We report a study that probed the information media consumption trends of the New York City subway. A large number of Americans living in urban environments spend a significant part of their daily lives on public transport, yet there are relatively few studies of the commuters' information behaviour. The study collected data through observation, interview and survey. Observations were conducted on 15 New York City subway lines by seven Information and Library Science students. Observers recorded the number of riders, types and number of information devices the riders used and how these devices were used. A few riders were interviewed about their use of information technology during their commutes; notes from the interviews were recorded immediately after the interviews. A survey about commuters' information activities and preferences was distributed primarily to the Information and Library Science students at Pratt Institute. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were carried out on the data, which included 154 observations, thirteen interviews and 460 survey responses. Quantitative analysis employed the statistical package SPSS and Microsoft Excel. Analysis of the interview data was performed by two independent coders. We found that roughly one-half of the commuters relied on various information devices for reading, typing, listening to music and other activities. The most popular activities on the trains included reading books, using a smartphone, and listening to music. The other half of the commuters was not actively engaged in the use of information devices. Among the factors that were found to be correlated with the commuters' information activities were information device ownership, time of the day, commute length, commuters' demographic characteristics, environmental conditions and other variables. Comparison of the study findings with previous research suggests that while information technology and services will continue to evolve, their use by commuters will very likely fit into several categories (e.g., productive use, use for entertainment, and non-use). Implications of the study findings and directions for the future research are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Is there an achievement gap for online reading ability based on income inequality that is separate from the achievement gap in traditional, offline reading? This possibility was examined between students in two pseudonymous school districts: West Town (economically advantaged) and East Town (economically challenged; N = 256). Performance-based assessments were used within a simulation of the Internet developed as part of a larger project. Seventh graders completed two online research and comprehension assessments, which evaluated four skill areas (locate, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate) and two knowledge domains in science. Students also completed an assessment of prior domain knowledge and a short Internet use questionnaire. Standardized state reading and writing test scores served as measures of offline literacy skills. Results indicated that there was a significant achievement gap favoring West Town students in offline reading scores, offline writing scores, and online research and comprehension scores. A significant gap persisted for online research and comprehension after we conditioned on pretest differences in offline reading, offline writing, and prior knowledge scores. The results of the questionnaire indicated that West Town students had greater access to the Internet at home and were required to use the Internet more in school. These results suggest that a separate and independent achievement gap existed for online reading, based on income inequality. Current estimates of this gap, which rely solely on measures of offline reading, may underrepresent the true nature of the U.S. reading achievement gap in an online age. Policy implications are explored.",

very very very library services + resource focused
though also there are some interesting points of comparison -- definitely reread thoroughly for
specifics about campus/library and home/dorm
In Ch 4: Library Design and Ethnography, they discuss different characteristics of floors and areas in the library and refer to them as largely student-created and enforced. (pp. 20-21) We don’t seem to have that as much, in fact, we have student complaints that areas aren’t quiet (most library complaints are about noise) and that no librarians enforce the rules.
their design charrettes produced student drawings of comfortable places. we do have students who like home better b/c it is more comfortable. but we also have students who need the serious and quiet discomfort of the library to get their work done (p. 22)
students did indicate a desire for more quiet space, though (pp. 28-29)
in Chapter 7: Mapping Diaries, interesting to see that many Rochester students did see the library as the place they went during in-between times, sometimes for studying, sometimes for casual email, sometimes for socializing. Doesn’t look like they sleep there, though. (p. 54)
Conclusion (Chapter 9, Then and Now: How Today’s Students Differ) -- some Rochester students find the dorms noisy and go to the library to study and also to avoid electronic distractions (pp. 68-69)
also this project made them consider what they need to do to have a student-centered library (p. 83)

The most commonly observed behavior was reading print material (18.8%). The second most common behavior was the use of social media (11.4%).
