"abstractNote": "Mindfulness has emerged as an important construct in the mental health field. Although evidence suggests benefits, it also appears that excitement over the clinical applications of mindfulness has largely suspended concentrated efforts to clarify fundamental elements of the construct. This article explores conceptual confusion and contrasts primary mindfulness‐based techniques before investigating attrition factors, adverse effects of mindfulness practices, and populations contraindicated for mindfulness‐based techniques. Implications for practice are provided. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: journal abstract)",

"abstractNote": "Whereas previous studies of fearful-face perception have probed visual awareness according to either objective or subjective criteria, in the present study, we probed the perception of briefly presented and masked fearful faces by assessing both types of perception within the same task. Both objective and subjective sensitivity measures were assessed within a common signal detection theory framework. To evaluate single-participant awareness, we employed a nonparametric receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of the behavioral data, which involved collecting a large number of trials over multiple sessions. Our findings revealed that nearly all subjects could reliably detect 17-ms fearful-face targets, thus exhibiting above-chance objective perception at this target duration. Reliable subjective sensitivity was also observed for 33-ms fearful-face targets and, for some subjects, even for 17-ms targets. The analysis of single-session data suggests that previous experiments may have lacked sufficient statistical power to establish above-chance performance. Taken together, our findings are consistent with a dissociation of fear perception according to objective and subjective criteria, which could be assessed for each individual participant. The determination of such a dissociation zone may help in understanding the conditions linked to aware and unaware fear perception. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved). "abstractNote": "This article draws on research in neuroscience, cognitive science, developmental psychology, and education, as well as scholarship from contemplative traditions concerning the cultivation of positive development, to highlight a set of mental skills and socioemotional dispositions that are central to the aims of education in the 21st century. These include self-regulatory skills associated with emotion and attention, self-representations, and prosocial dispositions such as empathy and compassion. It should be possible to strengthen these positive qualities and dispositions through systematic contemplative practices, which induce plastic changes in brain function and structure, supporting prosocial behavior and academic success in young people. These putative beneficial consequences call for focused programmatic research to better characterize which forms and frequencies of practice are most effective for which types of children and adolescents. Results from such research may help refine training programs to maximize their effectiveness at different ages and to document the changes in neural function and structure that might be induced.",

"abstractNote": "Some scholars of Chinese Chan Buddhism maintain that the innovations associated with early (eighth-century) Chan were largely in the area of doctrine and mythology. In other words, early Chan meditation and ritual practices would have been indistinguishable from non-Chan forms until the emergence, in the Song, of distinctive new methods such as kanhua meditation. This article argues that at least some of the early Chan patriarchs did indeed experiment with a new method (or methods), and that this method foreshadowed, at least superficially, techniques developed in twentieth-century Burmese Theravāda that we now associate with the satipaṭṭhāna movement (i.e., “mindfulness,” understood as “bare attention”); similar innovations, possibly influenced by early Chan, can be found in Tibetan Dzogchen. There is evidence that in eighth-century China, as in twentieth-century Burma, these new techniques emerged in order to make Buddhist practice more accessible to the laity, who were not in a position to engage in more traditional forms of meditation. And in China, as in Burma, the innovations sparked controversy: opponents held that the cultivation of a non-judgmental, non-discursive meditative state was ethically dubious and at odds with orthodox Buddhist teachings.",

"abstractNote": "Thirty years ago, \"mindfulness\" was a Buddhist principle mostly obscure to the west. Today, it is a popular cure-all for Americans' daily problems. A massive and lucrative industry promotes mindfulness in every aspect of life, however mundane or unlikely: Americans of various faiths (or none at all) practice mindful eating, mindful sex, mindful parenting, mindfulness in the office, mindful sports, mindfulness-based stress relief and addiction recovery, and hire mindful divorce lawyers. Mindfulness is touted by members of Congress, CEOs, and Silicon Valley tech gurus, and is even being taught in public schools, hospitals, and the military. Focusing on such processes as the marketing, medicalization, and professionalization of meditation, Jeff Wilson reveals how Buddhism shed its countercultural image and was assimilated into mainstream American culture. The rise of mindfulness in America, Wilson argues, is a perfect example of how Buddhism enters new cultures and is domesticated: in each case, the new cultures take from Buddhism what they believe will relieve their specific distresses and concerns, and in the process create new forms of Buddhism adapted to their needs. Wilson also tackles the economics of the mindfulness movement, examining commercial programs, therapeutic services, and products such as books, films, CDs, and even smartphone applications.Mindful America is the first in-depth study of this phenomenon--invaluable for understanding how mindfulness came to be applied to such a vast array of non-religious concerns and how it can be reconciled with traditional Buddhism in America.",

"abstractNote": "An authoritative handbook, this volume offers both a comprehensive review of the current science of mindfulness and a guide to its ongoing evolution. Leading scholars explore mindfulness in the context of contemporary psychological theories of attention, perceptual processing, motivation, and behavior, as well as within a rich cross-disciplinary dialogue with the contemplative traditions. After surveying basic research from neurobiological, cognitive, emotion/affective, and interpersonal perspectives, the book delves into applications of mindfulness practice in healthy and clinical populations, reviewing a growing evidence base. Examined are interventions for behavioral and emotion dysregulation disorders, depression, anxiety, and addictions, and for physical health conditions.",

"abstractNote": "This dissertation is an historical study of Tibetan Buddhists generally referred to as \"madmen\" (smyon pa ), whose \"madness\" carries a positive valuation more often than a negative one. Technically they are referred to as \"mad siddha s\" (grub thob smyon pa ) or \"mad yogi s\" ( rnal 'byor smyon pa ). This study seeks to uncover the purpose behind the eccentric behavior that got these ascetics labeled \"madmen\"; this understanding is arrived at through a systematic consideration of the ascetics' eccentric behavior in the context of their actual lives, and the greater context of the historical moment in which they lived. This study views this eccentric behavior as strategic, purposeful activity, rather than being the byproduct of a state of enlightenment. This study also considers how these holy madmen have been understood by Tibetans and Euro-Americans, with the purpose of highlighting certain lines of thinking that have become commonplace within those respective discourses.\nThis study takes into consideration \"madmen\" living from the 12th century to the present, but with a special focus on the three most famous exemplars of the tradition: Sangyé Gyeltsen (better known as the Madman of Tsang, 1452-1507), Drukpa Künlé (better known as the Madman of the Drukpa, 1455-1529?) and Künga Zangpo (better known as the Madman of Ü, 1458-1532). I argue that the distinctive eccentric behavior of the Madmen of Ü and Tsang is best understood as a form of \"tantric fundamentalism\" in that it was based on following a literal reading of the Highest Yoga tantras, enacted as a strategic response to changes taking place in late 15th-century Tibetan religious culture. The \"madness\" of Drukpa Künlé resulted from his taking a critical stance towards Tibetan religious culture in general. This study concludes that the \"holy madman\" tradition is constituted by highly self-aware individuals making strategic use of the theme of madness in the construction of their public personas.",
