This study aimed to contribute to this body of literature by exploring the meaning, experience, and place of play and playfulness in the day-to-day lives of older women. Interpreting older women’s play as a phenomenologist informed by the feminist gerontology literature, I explored, described, and interpreted play using the voices, words, lived experiences, and artful reflections of four focus groups comprised of nineteen women between the ages of 63 to 95 years. Play emerged to be a wonderful, complex, and paradoxical phenomenon for older women that interconnected in three ways: as a doing, a feeling, and a being. Within and across the women, play was characterized by these paradoxes: time flies by and time slows down, productive and unproductive, social and solitary, and serious and silly. Play was infused into the everyday lives of these older women. Arts-based methods served to invigorate and engage the women and me, and transformed the research environment into a comfortable, open space to play and be playful, and to share, gather, and build knowledge. It further focused on their understanding, perceptions, impacts and complexities of body image within the realm of dietetics. Methods: The Listening Guide method was applied in the form of a secondary data analysis of reflection papers written by senior-level undergraduate dietetic students who were enrolled in a senior-level Professional Practice course at Mount Saint Vincent University. This enabled access to their individual reality by examining the multiplicity of voices found within their narratives. Results: A complex interrelationship exists between participants’ strongly felt responsibility to meet holistic, client-centred professional expectations and the unforgiving bodily expectations imposed upon them by societal norms. The contrapuntal voice of conviction captures participants’ distanced stance to their perceived future role as dietetic professionals, providing indication into their felt discomfort in directly identifying themselves in this capacity. Through the integration of self-exposure, the art module further fostered strong connection-building,strengthening participants’ development of authenticity, compassion, and understanding for themselves and each other. The inter-relationship of the contrapuntal voices of vulnerability and transformation captures the significance of their emotionally-laden, personal journeys. Finally, participants’ involvement in the art module provided them with powerful skills in effectively navigating their evolving professional and personal identity. Conclusion: This research contributes to the understanding of the professional, interpersonal, and bodily connections fostered from an arts module. This allows for a more thorough understanding of the dietetic student as a learner and individual who embodies a complex identity: an identity that closely follows transitioning into their role as future health professionals. theory, and an arts-informed research method have important value for teacher professional practice and teacher education. I refer to two phases of a study involving women who have immigrated to Maritime Canada and were teachers in their countries of origin. I illustrate a process through which participants can weave multiple perspectives, unpack constructed realities, and become more reflective about their teacher identity and teaching practice.\n\nHISTOIRES MÉTISSÉES ET SYMBOLES FABRIQUÉS: RÉFLEXION CRITIQUE ET THÉORIE DE L’APPRENTISSAGE PAR TRANSFORMATION POUR LES ENSEIGNANTS\n\nRÉSUMÉ. Par le biais de cet article, je démontre que la théorie de l’apprentissage par transformation, une théorie de l’apprentissage associée aux clientèles adultes et une méthodologie de recherche axée sur les arts, se révèle d’une valeur cruciale pour la pratique professionnelle des enseignants ainsi que la formation des maîtres. Pour ce faire, je fais référence aux deux phases d’une étude impliquant des femmes enseignantes dans leur pays d’origine et ayant immigré dans la région canadienne des Maritimes. interviews, focus groups, learning journals, and observations, we explored the impact of an arts-based adult education project on 20 homeless/street involved women in Victoria and members of the public who attended exhibitions of the artworks they produced. Although not without challenges, the project created a strong sense of belonging by building trust and new connection. It also encouraged artistic skill development and metaphoric and creative responses to difficult social issues.
