"abstractNote": "Growth performance was assessed for a diverse suite of canopy and emergent tree species in a lowland neotropical rain forest (the La Selva Biological Station, northeastern Costa Rica). Species were evaluated based on annual diameter measurements of large samples of individuals in all post-seedling size classes, over a 12-yr period. The study species were seven non-pioneers (Minquartia guianensis, Lecythis ampla, Hymenolobium mesoamericanum, Simarouba amara, Dipteryx panamensis, Pithecellobium elegans, and Hyeronima alchorneoides) and two pioneers (Cecropia obtusifolia and C. insignia). For each species, inherent growth capacity through ontogeny was estimated as the mean of the five largest annual increments (from different individuals) in each juvenile and adult size class. At all tree sizes, species differed highly significantly in this measure. In the small sapling sizes (less than or equal to 4-cm diameter), the two pioneers showed markedly higher maximum growth than all the non-pioneers, in line with current understanding. This growth advantage, however, was quickly lost with increasing tree size. For eight of the nine species, the ontogenetic patterns of maximal growth closely corresponded to species groupings previously based on juvenile microsites (forest stage, light levels). Average growth rates, however, which are the combined result of environmental and biotic factors, did not show this correspondence. The groups based on microsite occupancy and growth potential provide a starting point for treating the great numbers of species of tropical rain forest trees as many fewer functional types, a sine qua non for modeling these complex forests. The exceptional growth capacity of one of our focal non-pioneer species (Simarouba) suggests that it represents a hitherto unrecognized functional type among tropical rain forest trees. The data from this long-term study indicate that several assumptions of current forest-dynamics models are not applicable to trees of this biome, For most species (1) diameter growth during regeneration was not correlated with tree size; (2) adult sizes were not characterized by a constant maximal basal-area increment; and (3) growth capacity did not decline toward zero as trees approached maximum size. Evaluation of overall increment distributions revealed a broad adult size range of exclusively high growth in the emergent Hymenolobium; for two additional species, sectors of the adult size range showed an absence of very low or negative growth. At most sizes, however, all nine species displayed the full range of growth increments, from slightly negative to observed maxima. Describing the performance of tropical rain forest canopy trees will require similar analysis of growth data obtained from many individuals and intervals, and stratified across juvenile and adult life stages. More realistic forest-dynamics models will depend on such evaluations of many tree species, in diverse tropical rain forests. Such models are greatly needed, both for designing management for this biome and for predicting its responses to changing climate and atmospheric conditions.",

"abstractNote": "The past 15 years has seen the creation oflarge (>/16 ha) permanent inventory plots in each of the major tropical forest formations of the world. Currently, six such plots have been fully mapped, and five more and under way. A standardized methodology is used at all sites — a complete census of all trees and saplings down to 1 cm in diameter — thus assuring strict comparability between sites and allowing the development of general models for the dynamics of tropical forests. The inventories aim to gather demographic information on individual tree species, to provide long-term information on forest composition so that future changes can be detected, to estimate the economic value of forest resources, to generate models of sustainable extraction, and to provide data on underused native species for use in reforestation or plantation forestry. The plots also provide data from undisturbed forest to serve as a control for anthropological and management studies of harvested forests.",

"abstractNote": "This book attempts to make growth models more accessible to foresters and others interested in mixed forests, whether planted or natural. There is an increasing interest in, and controversy surrounding the use of mixed plantations and natural forests, and rational discussion and resolution of management options require reliable growth models linked to other information systems. It is my hope that this book will help researchers to build better models, and will help users to understand how the models work and thus to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. During recent years, vast areas of natural forest, especially in the tropics, have been logged or converted to other uses. Well-meaning forest managers have often been over-optimistic in estimating forest growth and yields, and this has contributed to over-cutting in some forests. Growth models can provide objective forecasts, offering forest managers the information needed to maintain harvests within the sustainable capacity of the forest, and providing quantitative data for land use planners to make informed decisions on land use alternatives. In this way, I hope that this book will contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of natural forests in the tropics and elsewhere. This is not a \"How to do it\" manual with step-by-step instructions to build a growth model for mixed forests. Unfortunately, modelling these forests isn't that easy. There is no single \"best\" way to build a model for these forests. Rather, many approaches can be used, and the best one depends on the data available, the time and expertise available to build the model, the computing resources, and the inferences that are to be drawn from the model. So instead of writing a \"cookbook\" with one or two recipes, I review and illustrate some of the many approaches available, indicate the requirements of and output from each, and highlight their strengths and limitations. The book emphasizes empirical-statistical models rather than physiological-process type models, not because they are superior, but because they have proven utility and offer immediate benefits for forest management. A more comprehensive treatment of all the options is beyond the scope of this book, which is intended to serve as a ready reference manual for those building growth models for forest management. Because of my limited linguistic ability, the material covered is more-or-less restricted to English-language material. I have not attempted to review all the published work on growth modelling (it would be a huge task), but have tried to highlight examples that may be applicable to mixed forests in tropical areas. I hope that the language and terminology used in this book will be accessible to all readers, especially those for whom English is a second language. The glossary may help to clarify some terms, and those that have a specific technical meaning are printed in italics the first time they are used. Readers should consult the glossary to clarify the meaning of these words unless they are sure of the meaning. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter to reinforce points made in the chapter. These are simple exercises, deliberately chosen so that they can be completed quickly with pen and paper or PC and spreadsheet, but within these constraints, I have tried to keep them realistic. Some exercises (e.g. 9.1 and 10.3) require more specialized statistical analyses, but many commercial statistical packages (e.g. GLIM) are suitable. Where possible, these exercises draw on real data, but some data were simulated to create interesting exercises with few data. Whilst my approach places more responsibility on the reader to choose and develop a suitable modelling methodology, I hope it will help readers gain a better understanding of modelling, which should in turn lead to better models and more reliable predictions. And I hope that better models will provide better information, greater understanding, and better management of mixed forests.",

"abstractNote": "Forest succession was studied in four plots in former grasslands at the Ngogo study area in Kibale National Park, Uganda. The plots were located in areas that had been protected from fire for 0.58, 25, 9 and ≈30 years for plots 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Species richness reflected the length of time that the plot had been protected from fire; it was highest in plot 4 and lowest in plot 1. Species density, stem density and basal area were all highest in plot 4 and lowest in plot 1. The species densities of plots 2 and 3 were not different. Similarly, plots 2 and 4 did not differ with regard to stem density or basal area.
