During the term, students will have the opportunity to engage:\n\nTools and techniques for analyzing source materials, assessing problems, and communicating results common to those working in the discipline of the humanities,\n\nMajor computing tools (software, hardware, and peripherals) and techniques used by those working in the digital humanities, focusing on their broad application across the discipline of the humanities,\n\nElectronic research methods and approaches to critical thinking required to find and evaluate electronic sources,\n\nMethods of analyzing humanities research problems in terms of appropriate computing solutions, with an awareness of the potential limitations and benefits of a particular situation,\n\nCollaborative research in fields of the humanities that have traditionally promoted individual research, and\n\nThe social, ethical, legal, and philosophical implications of computing and technology.\n\nIt is important to note that, while the course will introduce students to tools, techniques, and skills, HUMA 150 is an academic course, not a “skills” course. Students are expected to have basic writing and reasoning skills—including a working knowledge of standard word processing and Internet applications—such that assignments can be written, argued, and presented effectively.\n\nLearning Outcomes for the Course\nBy the conclusion of this course, students should learn to:\n\nCollaborate with their peers through not only the use of new technologies but also an agreed-upon and democratic workflow,\n\nPurposefully read, analyze, and synthesize electronic texts and new media using the appropriate research tools and techniques,\n\nConcisely articulate issues (e.g., social, cultural, economic, technical, and aesthetic) common to digital humanities research and explain why they are relevant to today’s audiences,\n\nPersuasively communicate the stakes of digital humanities research,\n\nDemonstrate awareness of various strategies used by digital humanities practitioners to interpret history and culture, and\n\nCollaboratively produce a proof of concept for a new digital humanities project, which is relevant to students, staff, and faculty at the University of Victoria.\n\nStudent work will be evaluated through individual blog entries, a collaborative project, a project proposal, an oral presentation, and class discussions. Throughout the term, students will use a course WordPress blog as a networked writing environment to provide constructive feedback on the work of their peers. This course is dedicated to identifying these changes and assessing their conse- quences for literary scholarship.\nThe first third of the semester will serve as an introduction to (new) media studies, since the changes wrought by digital texts are in part the result of the ways in which they are physically distinct from dead-tree books. We’ll read some of the founding texts of media studies (McLuhan, Kittler), as well as more recent work devoted to the specific is- sues raised by digital texts and the Web (McGann, Galloway). We’ll also deal with some of the large-scale philosophical and theoretical issues brought to the fore by new media generally (Hansen, Manovich). Finally, as a preface to the sometimes more quantitative orientation of digital studies proper, we’ll read Bruno Latour’s work on the relationships between scientific practice, social interactions, and claims to truth or knowledge.\nIn the later and larger part of the course, we’ll deal with the literary-critical opportuni- ties presented by the increasing availability of electronic texts. Some background: Over the last fifty years or so—roughly coinciding with, and perhaps equivalent to, the rise of theory—literary studies as a field has moved away from evaluating the aesthetic merits of individual texts, toward understanding their place in larger cultural systems. This phe- nomenon has necessarily produced a healthy distrust of canons and canonicity, that is, of the idea that a relatively small number of books are objectively great and ought to be read in preference to others. But we have become no less finite beings in the last half-century, and we are still faced with the problem of many books and little time. So we have tended to treat the relatively small set of texts that we do manage to read as, if not great, then at least distinctly and importantly symptomatic of trends and tensions in the cultural situa- tions that produce them. (This practice is in fact more or less constitutive of literary and cultural theory.) Still, this is an (extraordinarily useful) accommodation to a regrettable\n2\tSyllabus, English xxx, Spring 2009\nlimitation, rather than something we desire in itself; as scholars (if not as discerning read- ers), we would prefer to read everything.\nHappily, it is now becoming possible for us to analyze and extract information from bodies of text far larger than those we can read directly. We’ll look at several examples of this work—known collectively as “digital humanities” and culled mostly from the field’s two leading journals, Literary and Linguistic Computing and Digital Humanities Quar- terly—to see how it works and what it can do for us as literary scholars. We’ll also study some of the technical aspects involved in doing digital humanities work (McCarty, Baayen), and we’ll read Franco Moretti’s influential study-cum-manifesto Graphs, Maps, Trees.\nObjectives\nThis course has three primary objectives, which can be arranged in order of increasing generality. First, it aims to provide a specific body of knowledge about digital humani- ties—what it is, how it works, and where it came from. Students who complete this course will be prepared to undertake more advanced work in this hybrid area and to begin mak- ing their own contributions to it.
