Educators are continually searching for ways to encourage parent participation in the educational process (Dunman, 1998). If parents understand what's going on in the classroom and what's expected of them and the students, they'll he more able to help their child at home and will feel more comfortable with the teacher and the teaching methods employed (Ludwig, 1999). This process may be facilitated when parents have access to a class web site through the Internet. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a physical education/health web site on parental knowledge of the program. A web site was developed for four physical education and two health classes. Ninety-four parents of the seventh grade students in these classes were selected. Parents completed a pre and post web site questionnaire. Results show the information they searched for in order of importance was related to: assessment, assignments, content, and program knowledge to aid parental assistance. Prior to using the web site, the majority of parents did not know what activities their children were doing in class. After having the opportunity to use the web site, the majority of parents said they always knew what activities their children were doing. The number of parents who knew their child's progress in class increased after using the web site. However, the majority of parents did not know what assignments their child had in class before and after using the web site. Results show that web designers should put high emphasis to ease users' browsing experience by providing a good web navigation system. The educational website should also be appealing by appropriately manipulating multimedia elements including color, graphics, fonts and typography. The multimedia learning principles should further be applied to enhance the educational purposes of the website. However, there is a dearth of research in which PE program websites have been examined. We investigated and described the online presence of PE programs by examining the prevalence, content, and design quality of public school PE program websites in the state of Alabama. Data collection included a review of all public school websites (N = 1,280) in Alabama for the presence of webpages and websites dedicated to PE programs. PE program webpages and websites (n = 84) were analyzed according to content, control, consistency, and corroboration features. Findings revealed an exceptionally low prevalence and quality of PE program websites or webpages in Alabama public schools. A well developed website is an educational tool physical educators can use in their efforts to teach students about physical activity and health. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of website utilization and the components of websites in use in middle and high school physical education programs. In order to determine the status of active websites as well as the content and design quality of physical education websites in middle and high schools, 285 school websites in two Southern California counties were searched during October 2007. In order to assess the quality of those websites, a website checklist was utilized to evaluate content and design features that should be included on a website. The features on the checklist were organized into categories of content, control (navigation), consistency (readability), and corroboration (accountability). Only 50 (17.5%) of the 285 identified schools had an active physical education department website. In addition, most of the physical education websites were incomplete and lacked important design and content features. Consequently, most of the websites did not favorably represent their departments or the profession of physical education. The low percentage of websites found and the low quality of the websites that were discovered indicate that most physical educators are not taking advantage of an educational tool that has great potential to both promote their department and aid in student learning.
