A study was undertaken in order to enumerate the operations at risk for epicondylitis. Workers were interviewed in order to identify difficult operations and systematic observations were done over 4 workdays. Although tasks were extremely varied, certain movements at risk for epicondylitis were repeated many times. Fifty-three valves were turned against resistance as part of this job, and one valve requiring a particularly difficult movement was turned 20 times in one day. There were at least 61 operations at risk for epicondylitis per day over a 4-day period. Strain on the elbow joint was particularly intense for the woman worker because the design of the workplace gave an advantage to taller workers with larger hands. Although this case study does not permit us to conclude that the worker's epicondylitis was due to her job, it enables us to suggest that it would be wise to adapt the dimensions of relevant equipment and worksites to a wider range of potential worker sizes. We also raise some questions about the definition of repetitive strain in epidemiological studies. We suggest that it may be necessary to consider not only the cycle time but also the total of forces exerted on a joint in order to study workplace injuries to the musculoskeletal system.", However, the nutritional benefit from omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) may offset the deleterious effects of mercury. Increased n-3 FA have been associated with lower rates of mood disorders. The authors examined neuropsychiatric symptoms among 243 freshwater fish-eaters, with low serum n-3 FA (median = 0.11 mg/mL) and low mercury exposure (median in blood and hair = 2.22 and 0.54 microg/g). They assessed neuropsychiatric symptoms with the Brief Symptom Inventory. The results did not show the expected inverse association between serum n-3 FA and neuropsychiatric symptoms. For men who consumed more than 130 g of alcohol per week, the authors observed a positive association between serum n-3 FA and neuropsychiatric symptoms, possibly reflecting an alcohol-related release of n-3 FA from membranes into blood. But numbers can play an important role in illustrating analyses in qualitative research. Their persuasive, concrete nature can help ensure the success of a workplace intervention, especially in the North American context, where numbers are treated very seriously. We describe a method of work analysis and transformation developed at the Conservatoire national des arts et metiers in Paris, where the meaning of the numbers used is critical. We think that the numbers used in work analysis have a different meaning from that in a \"pure\" quantitative study, where they are submitted to statistical procedures for hypothesis testing. Exposure to high doses of manganese is associated with irreversible neurodegenerative disorders resembling idiopathic Parkinson disease. Although there is a risk of Mn accumulation in the foetus during pregnancy, little information exists about developmental effects of environmental low-level exposure in human. For this reason, we conducted a prospective epidemiological study in 247 healthy pregnant women and their babies to determine the long-term effect of in utero Mn levels on child's psychomotor development. Concurrently, we examined the relationship between Mn tissue levels at delivery and foetal plasma monoamine metabolites. Of the newborns, 195 were examined at 9 months, 126 at 3 years and 100 at 6 years. At 9 months, the Brunet-L�zine scales were administered. The McCarthy scales of children's abilities were used at 3 and 6 years. After adjustment for potential confounding co-factors (child's gender, mother's educational level), negative relationships were observed between cord blood Mn levels and several psychomotor sub-scales at age of 3 years: \"attention\" (partial r=-0.33, P<0.001), \"non-verbal memory\" (partial r=-0.28, P<0.01), and \"hand skills\" (partial r=-0.22, P<0.05). No significant relationships were observed between Mn measures at birth and the general psychomotor indices, Brunet-L�zine developmental quotient (DQ) at 9 months or McCarthy general cognitive index (GCI) at 3 and 6 years. Maternal blood Mn levels were negatively associated with foetal plasma HVA and 5-HIAA concentrations (adjusted for labour duration, child's gender, and smoking during pregnancy), but the adjustment for monoamine levels at birth did not change the association between the Mn levels and the psychomotor scores. Monoamine oxidase (MAO; EC 1.4.3.4) regulates biogenic amine concentration in the brain and peripheral tissue and has been shown to be a molecular target of Hg compounds in animal models. Blood platelet monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) activity may reflect MAO function in the central nervous tissue. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between platelet MAO-B and Hg exposure in fish-eating adults (n=127) living along the St. Lawrence River (Lake St. Pierre, Que., Canada). Hg concentrations were determined in blood and hair samples. A significant negative association was observed between platelet MAO-B activity and blood-Hg (r=-0.193, p=0.029) but not with hair-Hg levels (r=-0.125, p=0.169). Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that blood-Hg (beta=-4.6, p=0.011) and heavy smoking (beta=-8.5, p=0.001) were associated with reduced platelet MAO activity in the total population. In addition, this reduction in MAO-B activity appeared to be associated with blood-Hg concentrations above 3.4 microg/L (75th percentile). Possible gender related differences were also observed and are discussed. Our results suggest that MAO-B activity in blood platelets may be a useful tool to assess biochemical effects of Hg exposure in human populations. Des déséquilibres dans les écosystèmes provoquent des situations qui accroissent la vulnérabilité des êtres humains à la maladie. De plus, nous commençons à peine à comprendre les problèmes de santé propres aux centres urbains surpeuplés et sévèrement pollués. Researchers need to consider the effect of gender on how occupational health issues are experienced, expressed, defined, and addressed. More serious consideration of gender-related factors will help identify risk factors for both women and men. METHODS: The authors, who come from a number of disciplines (ergonomics, epidemiology, public health, social medicine, community psychology, economics, sociology) pooled their critiques in order to arrive at the most common and significant problems faced by occupational health researchers who wish to consider gender appropriately. RESULTS: This paper describes some ways that gender can be and has been handled in studies of occupational health, as well as some of the consequences. The paper also suggests specific research practices that avoid errors. Obstacles to gender-sensitive practices are considered. However, some attendants suggest that women attendants do not carry out their fair share of tasks involving physical effort, resulting in male attendants being exposed to increased risk of injury. To examine this assumption, the authors observed attendants carrying out 1,169 physical operations for a total of 61 hours. Surprisingly, women performed significantly more operations per hour than their male counterparts. After discussions with participants, a number of factors were proposed to account for the divergence between the assumption (that women did not share equally in physical tasks) and the authors' observation (that women carried out more tasks per hour than men). These factors include: retention of stronger women, stereotyping, and recourse to men for rare, extremely demanding operations.
