transformative ends as well. In a field study of a Reform synagogue, two liturgical rituals were identified which together reveal or express culture-wide tensions. One ritual reflects the dominance of modern values, in conformity with the institution's commitment to modernity; the other is an expression of \"counter-modern\" efforts. In rejecting some of the main features of the first ritual, the second ritual reflects changing values as it contests the dominant institutional order and projects alternative religious possibilities for its participants.
