Cada día, las tecnologías de la información son creadas, modificadas y actualizadas, para hacerlas capaces de abarcar cualquier campo de la vida humana; solucionando necesidades y, a veces, generando otras. La producción del conocimiento académico no es la excepción. Las disciplinas universitarias se han enriquecido con las distintas herramientas que ofrece la internet. El mundo de la comunicación digital ha implicado que los estudiantes de México puedan consultar las bibliotecas londinenses desde la comodidad hogar, por ejemplo. Así, los anaqueles del conocimiento, cada vez más, se vuelven universales con el apoyo del desarrollo de la informática.

Los autores de este artículo, se encargan de desmenuzar las vitalidades y consecuencias que para la disciplina histórica tiene el desarrollo de la tecnología informativa. Son propositivos al tratar de especificar, cómo los medios digitales pueden mejorar el trabajo del historiador. Destacan que hay una coherencia intrínseca, pues tanto la Historia, como este tipo de tecnología, tienen en la comunicación un factor preponderante.

No obstante, los medios digitales, creados para facilitar las minucias del trabajo, han ocasionado, por sus características y la relación que implica con otras comunidades, que el historiador cambie sus orientaciones metodológicas y epistemológicas. En principio,  como en antaño se hacía de disciplinas auxiliares como la numismática, ahora el historiador debe adquirir conocimientos informáticos para hacer su labor. También, al estar en contacto directo con su público, el historiador debe presentar su conocimiento de manera tal que pueda ser comprendido, y se ajuste a las necesidades de los demás navegantes de la red.

El desarrollo de hipervínculos, en términos epistemológicos, ha ocasionado que la lectura no sea algo lineal; cada usuario tiene la posibilidad de hacerse su imagen de mundo con los paquetes de información seleccionados por él. Empero, quizá el reto más importante para la disciplina es la aparición de la Web 2.0. en la cual, cualquier usuario pude editar la información y complementarla con sus propias experiencias. Digamos que la historia se vuelve colectiva y elimina las fronteras entre autor-lector. Así las cosas, queda en estado enigmático la función del historiador, un problema que los autores invitan a reflexionar.

Desde múltiples ejemplos de juegos exitosos con contenido histórico, no solo medieval, se demuestra como la historia hace parte fundamental de esta industria. A partir de los diferentes tipos de jugador se tiene que el videojuego es un elemento de sociabilidad, con el ejemplo de los MMORPG, y de aprendizaje, especialmente aquellos con contenido histórico fuerte, como el ejemplo de Age of Empires II o Medieval Total War II. Aunque no se dejan de lado los imaginarios creados por universos fantásticos como los de Tolkien o Lewis. Se señala también que el videojuego debe ser de calidad, en lo gráfico y su jugabilidad así como teniendo un equilibrio entro lo lúdico y lo histórico. Las personas que se dedican a cartografiar los paisajes de dicho tiempo son personas asociadas a la religiosidad, representados en los mapas T-O que reflejan la existencia eterna, siendo por ende atemporales. \nEl tiempo de Cronos se asocia al tiempo secular, el cual guía la cartografía moderna y está sujeto a un dinamismo mayor, siendo revitalizado por los cambios geográficos —tanto físicos como humanos—. En este punto, Dickason explica las redefiniciones de la cartografía histórica que conllevan una democratización de la misma. El autor inicia hablando de un cambio de lenguaje en la era cibernética, cambio que implica un mayor margen de error en los procedimientos por no ser estos controlados directamente por humanos. No obstante, afirma que es imposible ser adversos a esa nueva realidad, y que es necesario debatir su impacto en la cultura, y sobre todo la forma en que las prácticas intelectuales se vinculan con las nuevas formas de comunicación. El autor pasa a explicar las características del blog, donde destaca el orden cronológico y la necesidad de renovar los contenidos posteando constantemente, lo cual exige también una forma específica de pensar.

Con todo, no se trata sólo de escribir historia y publicarla en blogs, sino de cambiar la forma de pensar la historia, sin que reflexionar sobre ésta tenga que ajustarse a los lenguajes tradicionales, sino que pueda adoptar lenguajes que incluyan nuevas posibilidades, y en los cuales esté incluido un mayor número de personas. El autor llama este grupo la blogósfera, la cual es una comunidad –que se expresa en el blog- que está implicada en todo el proceso de creación histórica, y por tal, también contempla el impacto de este conocimiento sobre la sociedad.

Posteriormente el autor pasa a explicar los usos que puede tener el blog para la historia: como distribuidor gratuito de material bibliográfico y documental, como almacenador de notas o diarios de campo, como herramienta institucional que divulgue trabajos hechos, y como un diario de noticias que recoja información y polémicas actuales. Finalmente el autor enfatiza en el blog como un espacio de encuentro e interacción entre lectores y escritores, que llegue a una retroalimentación entre las dos partes.  Rescata también la ventaja de la velocidad de circulación y evaluación de la información, y hace un llamado a abandonar las prisiones del papel, y a no desacreditar información sólo por encontrarse en un blog y no en un libro, ya que por esto mismo se debe hacer un esfuerzo conjunto por guiar las búsquedas y evitar las contingencias.

El autor inicia indagando sobre las posibilidades que ofrece el internet a los estudiantes de aprender. Se basa en la creencia de que un aprendizaje apegado a las páginas de internet, es una recolección de basura; aunque no está tan de acuerdo con esto. El problema para él radica en que si solo se consulta el internet, el estudiante puede caer en una falta de comprensión real de lo que está consultando, y del área de conocimiento en general. La razón para esta está en que en el internet no se leen contextos ni se asume la historia como una ciencia interpretativa que requiere un profundo nivel de análisis para llegar a unir la información tan incompleta e imperfecta que tenemos del pasado y de los hombres del pasado. Las búsquedas en línea han hecho que los estudiantes piensen la historia como una mera recopilación de datos incuestionables, escritos a partir de una información objetiva y completa; y no advierten que cada texto histórico esconde una forma del autor de ver el mundo, y es la defensa de algún modo de pensar. El autor nos dice, entonces, que es necesario tener mucha precaución, y enseñarles a los estudiantes a tenerla, en las búsquedas de información en internet, pues un ejercicio de buscar por tags, y copiar lo que allí sale, aleja a los estudiantes de entender el rigor involucrado en el intento de dar sentido al pasado. Es necesario, pues, entender la fragilidad de la información, contrastar textos, mirar sus debilidades, sus métodos, y para esto es necesaria la lectura comparada, y no quedarse con un solo texto. El internet puede ser una herramienta incluso muy útil y eficaz para este propósito, por la cantidad de información que permite almacenar, y por ser un medio gratuito de publicación; pero para aprovecharla es necesario controlar las búsquedas, establecer normas, fijar controles de calidad y dirigir el tráfico.
