After using Zotero for the term I have become convinced Zotero is the way of the future. Please do not misinterpret me, Zotero is not perfect but the system it uses is exactly what is needed in the current digital environment. In a sense Zotero is nothing new. There are programs that can generate citations, programs that can allow you to make note, and programs that allow you to tag post and retrieve all post with that tag. What is revolutionary about Zotero is it allows you to do all of these in one programs and that I believe is what makes it revolutionary. Before I had Zotero the only way I could keep track of my webpages was through the bookmarking pages and my search history. Yet both these systems get bog down and less user friendly the more data you add to them. Keeping track of eight book marks is easy keeping track of 40 is impossible. Zotero allows you to tag not just the resources but the notes on those resources and you can tag a note different from what you tagged the original resource which is extremely helpful. I for one see a program similar to Zotero becoming standard in internet browsers within my life time. There are so many benefits to the programs that it really streamlines research an managing your web resources. Though as I have sung Zotero’s praises I will briefly talk about some of its issues.
\nOne of the main problems with Zotero is not every one tags their webpages with Meta Data, the data Zotero draws on to create its citation. The issue is that when a site is not compatible with Zotero it is complicated to input all the information necessary. Not to mention the way Zotero stores all your resources in a long list makes it very messy and can make finding a single resources without using the tag system difficult. It can also be very cluttered if you have extensive notes on a resource as the notes do not have an organizational system beyond the tag system. If you don’t use the tagging system for your notes than your notes are simply organized alphabetically which is very frustrating. In summary the issues with Zotero are linked. Not every webpage works with Zotero, yet, and that can lead to having to do data entry manually which is the second issue. The second issue is that manually managing data in Zotero, ex: entering an articles information manually or managing your resources without the tag system is very difficult. Thus Zotero is just a bit ahead of its time and when it does force the user to ‘do things the old fashion way’ are it’s greatest moments of weakness. Know that we will wrap up this note on some of Zotero’s greatest strengths.
\nRegardless of whether Zotero goes main stream and becomes part of internet browsers everywhere it will be key to the next generation of scholars. Citation styles are diverse and most undergraduates have to learn how to use at least two. Zotero takes all the guess work out of citations and makes them quick and easy. Further more it can cite any webpage which is honestly the hardest part of learning citation because citations are still changing for digital media and webpages. The ability to attach PDF and notes allow scholars to do research even when they do not have an internet connection. The tagging system allows user to keep track of their information from course to subject matter. In conclusion Zoteor is very useful for keeping track of digital resources. Not simply in terms of where that resource is on the web but actually managing the resources itself. What you think of it, what it relates to, and what you use it for; Zotero allows you to do all of these with your digital resources. That is why I suspect it will go further in the future. It is hard enough keeping track of resources on the internet and goodness know the book mark system is archaic. Thus Zotero is a potential vision of what the future of personal data management might look like.
