I heard about Zotero in a past History class, and I found the concept interesting. I often struggled with having a lot of different sources, losing track of them, not keeping the right information (ex publisher), and having to go through the process of finding them all over again if I did lose them.

Zotero seemed to be a good way to avoid these issues. I did not start using Zotero until this class though. When I first started adding to it I was doing so randomly, as I did not know what I was doing my project on at the time. Zotero therefore became clogged up with useless items that I would not look at again, solely for the purpose of getting a certain amount of each source for the first part of the project.

In the period between the first submission of the Zotero Bibliography and now, I have not used the tool. This was due to a number of things. I have only recently decided what to do my project on, so I only recently added those items to Zotero. I was not in the habit of using Zotero for other classes, as most of my essays do not call for a lot of sources, and the sources that are required are journal articles. Sticking to my own habits, I continued to just download the PDF onto my computer, and organizing it based on folders for various classes. The final thing that caused me issues was that after submitting the first part of the Zotero project I ran into issues with my computer, and I had to switch to a different laptop. I did not download Zotero right away, as I was only borrowing the computer, and imagined I would get my old one back before I needed to use Zotero again. Unfortunately I still have not fixed my computer, but I was happy to discover that Zotero Standalone maintained my sources when downloaded onto a new computer.

For this part of the project I streamlined what I had saved to Zotero, so that I only had sources relevant to my project. Once I had streamlined my sources, I then went through to edit these items, making sure they were under the right item type, that they had the right title, and that there was an author named attached (if applicable). This ended up being really tedious. It seemed like a waste of time, having to return to websites and journal articles, and shift through pages in order to find an author name or dates (which I always find really hard to find on a website). Journal articles are very helpful in having all of that information convert into Zotero though, when I save it to Zotero from online.

The best time to organize the information would be when I was first saving the article, rather than leaving it all to the last minute (like I did this time). Usually when I am first collecting articles though, I am never sure whether they will actually be helpful, so I do not see the point in organizing them if I am never going to use them.

Another issue I ran into was the software not working when I wanted to add PDF’s to the online library. It would not let me drag the files into the library on Zotero Standalone. It was only after it was explained to me that I had to create a file for the PDF or go back and find the article and save it from the website, that the issue was fixed.

Now that I have organized all the information, and tagged my sources, I see that it could be useful. It is satisfying to have all that information so close at hand, instead of having to open the PDF and search through the document, or returning online to find the information. It does take quite a bit of time to organize that information even in Zotero though. Perhaps under different circumstances I would have used it more frequently and gotten into a habit with it. During this term I found myself getting, more often than not, frustrated with the tool.
