"note": "
Reflection on using Zotero as a digital tool this term and going forward
\n
While using Zotero this past semester, I have gained a better understanding of how to integrate my sources into a database and how to cite my sources properly for papers and assignments. However, upon looking back, while seeing the wide variety of sources I have used in the last semester for various courses is impressive, I found the whole process frustrating and would not likely maintain a Zotero database in the future.
\n
Before I had to use Zotero for this class, my main strategy for collecting notes for sources was to start with a bibliography of the sources I wanted to use on Microsoft Word. Then I pull out quotations or important ideas from each reading and type those below each corresponding citation. While this process may seem more inefficient that Zotero, I prefer this process because it allows me to see easily all the important quotes I want to use in my paper at a glance and compare each source's arguments. In contrast, in Zotero, it is more difficult to compare my notes from several sources at the same time.
\n
In addition, because of the requirements for the database checks, when using Zotero I always had to be hyper vigilant about adding information to all the important blanks when entering a new source. While this information would be vital if I were going to integrate these sources into a paper, the fact remains that a vast majority if these sources in my database were class readings or supplements to classwork that I never planned to integrate into a paper. For this reason, I often felt like I was wasting my time worrying about whether or not each of my source entries was labeled correctly when I never planned to use the sources intensively ever again.
\n
In addition, while Zotero is a great tool or organizing large amounts of data, the tool's interface is somewhat lackluster when it comes to note taking. The note taking application is very minimalistic, which can be frustrating for users. For example, Zotero will underline words in red that are spelled improperly, but it will not suggest a new spelling. In an ironic twist, the note taking feature actually says that the word 'Zotero' is spelled wrong. In addition, because Zotero does not allow users to change the font or font size, it can be difficult to even read the notes, let alone identify where in the word the spelling mistake might have occurred. These limitations make Zotero's note taking more like Microsoft's WordPad rather than Microsoft Word. Because the note taking interface is limited, it made it frustrating for me to interact with the notes I had already written and I often ended up copying notes in off Word so that I could read and edit the notes more efficiently.
\n
Ultimately, I believe that the differences between traditional note taking techniques and using Zotero is similar to reading physical books versus using an e-reader like a Kindle. Ideally, a Kindle is superior, as you can download thousands of books to one place, highlight, annotate, search the text, and find related books easily. However, at least of to this point, physical books still dominate the market despite their apparent flaws. For me, this analogy works well for Zotero because, while on paper, Zotero clearly seems to be a better organizational tool, there is something about taking notes in a more manual, deliberate fashion that I prefer, even if it does not make much sense. While I enjoyed the opportunity to use Zotero and know that I will likely be required to utilize it more the the future given that I am going to grad school for public history, I remain dubious about its advantages over my current note taking technique. I can understand Zotero's use for historians and other academics, as they routinely need to manage the large swath of sources they use for various articles, books, and classes. However, on a smaller scale, such as for undergraduate students, I think that Zotero might be over organizing for what students need.
",
