Reflecting on Zotero

I am very thankful for having been introduced to Zotero. Initially, I thought I would only use it for this course and only add items for the sake of fulfilling the guidelines in part 1. However, the more I explored the functions of the software and its browser add-on, the more I realized how essential this application would be for my university studies.

Since the first part of the assignment, I have mostly used Zotero to organize the sources I consulted over the semester, grouping the entries in collections named after each assignment. The fact that the application comes with a handy web add-on has greatly improved my research efficiency. In the past, I would copy all of my hyperlinks and information into a document, and once I had narrowed down my sources, I would use a website like BibMe or EasyBib to edit the fields and generate a bibliography. Now, with Zotero, all I have to do is click on a button in my browser and the source is directly added to whatever collection or sub-collection I have open in the application. Also, both BibMe and EasyBib have recently severely limited the functions for their free versions and offer less-than-stellar metadata reading, making Zotero my new go-to for referencing.

Zotero has been very useful in areas outside of the Digital Humanities course. In my Multimédia 1 course, for instance, the Professor would post educational articles and tutorials for us on our Facebook page, on the class's website, and on Blackboard. Zotero proved to be an effective way of organizing all of these useful resources in one place without having to sort through multiple web pages or scroll down an endless list of posts. Additionally, I was recently accepted into the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program at the University of Ottawa, and my Professor/mentor was impressed by my preexisting usage of Zotero; it is what she has used in the previous stages of her Political bots research project. Thanks to the knowledge I acquired in this course, I knew how to add myself to the project's Group Library, which includes other scholars from Canada and the United Kingdom, and I was able to share some of the sources I started collecting on bots.

Aside from the browser add-on, here are other features I liked:

Despite Zotero's many strengths, there are some functions I would've liked to change or think should be improved. Understandably, outside of journal articles, metadata of online content is not completely standardized, a concept I have learned in my New Media course. Because of this, I had to manually input a lot of the information. This isn't necessarily bad, as it encourages double-checking, but the fact that I couldn't edit the fields for multiple entries at the same time was a bit tedious, especially for multiple sources with the same author.

\n

Also, as a lifelong Windows and iTunes user, I would've liked to be able to edit fields by clicking on them directly from their listed entry (as opposed to always having to go to the box on the right to edit information). Furthermore, the lack of an official mobile version of Zotero is disappointing, especially in this day and age, and although I like the note function, I don't like how it becomes its own bibliographic entry when generating a bibliography. It would also be nice if changes made to sources in my personal library were automatically synced with the same entries in the Group libraries.

Finally, I think that, personally, Zotero's biggest downside is that the visual element is lacking. Yes, icons are present to distinguish the different types of items, but as a visual learner, I would have liked if there was another \"view\" to Zotero like there is on Windows Explorer; instead of just having the list view, I feel like, in some cases, a picture preview would be useful. For journal articles, there wouldn't be much of a difference, but for web pages, images, artwork, books, magazines, films, and videos, having this visual preview would be more effective when browsing. There could also be an option for audio recordings and podcasts where a sound icon would be present and the user could hear a preview of the sound when hovering over the icon. One could argue that making these changes would steer Zotero away from its intended purpose as an academic research tool, but I think that having more viewing options could be useful for researchers who look into primary sources that aren't journal articles.

All in all, my experience with Zotero has been mostly positive. This semester, I used it for my courses in Digital Humanities and Multimédia, as well as my Undergraduate research project, but I plan on making use of it for more of my courses (especially from the beginning).
