This study by Kristi S. Lekies and Marcia Eames-Sheavly examined the ways in which gender, length of time working with the garden project, different types of gardening activities, and garden skills learned influenced interests in gardening. Regression analysis indicated that gardening skills had the strongest effect on gardening interest, followed by participation in planning and management activities, gender, and length of time. Part of a special issue of Applied Environmental Education & Communication (Volume 6 Issue 1 2007) devoted to children’s gardening.

We found that for 145 urban public housing residents randomly assigned to 18 architecturally identical buildings, levels of vegetation in common spaces predict both use of common spaces and NSTs; further, use of common spaces mediated the relationship between vegetation and NSTS. In addition, vegetation and NSTs were significantly related to residents' senses of safety and adjustment. These findings suggest that the use and characteristics of common spaces may play a vital role in the natural growth of community, and that improving common spaces may be an especially productive focus for community organizing efforts in inner-city neighborhoods.", "publicationTitle": "American Journal of Community Psychology", "volume": "26", "issue": "6", "pages": "823-851", "date": "", "series": "", "seriesTitle": "", "seriesText": "", "journalAbbreviation": "Am J Community Psychol", "language": "en", "DOI": "10.1023/A:1022294028903", "ISSN": "0091-0562, 1573-2770", "shortTitle": "Fertile Ground for Community", "url": "http://link.springer.com/article/10.1023/A:1022294028903", "accessDate": "2016-10-19T13:27:50Z", "archive": "", "archiveLocation": "", "libraryCatalog": "link.springer.com", "callNumber": "", "rights": "", "extra": "", "tags": [ { "tag": "Community Building and Social Connections" } ], "collections": [ "VEX3BBZ4" ], "relations": {}, "dateAdded": "2016-10-19T13:27:50Z", "dateModified": "2016-10-19T13:27:50Z" } }, { "key": "B7E4VW4N", "version": 80, "library": { "type": "group", "id": 718797, "name": "Research Supporting Garden-Based Learning", "links": { "alternate": { "href": "https://www.zotero.org/groups/research_supporting_garden-based_learning", "type": "text/html" } } }, "links": { "self": { "href": "https://api.zotero.org/groups/718797/items/B7E4VW4N", "type": "application/json" }, "alternate": { "href": "https://www.zotero.org/groups/research_supporting_garden-based_learning/items/B7E4VW4N", "type": "text/html" }, "up": { "href": "https://api.zotero.org/groups/718797/items/9T6EZGN6", "type": "application/json" } }, "meta": { "createdByUser": { "id": 3336978, "username": "gbl_cornell", "name": "", "links": { "alternate": { "href": "https://www.zotero.org/gbl_cornell", "type": "text/html" } } } }, "data": { "key": "B7E4VW4N", "version": 80, "parentItem": "9T6EZGN6", "itemType": "attachment", "linkMode": "imported_url", "title": "Snapshot", "accessDate": "2016-10-19T13:27:50Z", "url": "http://link.springer.com/article/10.1023%2FA%3A1022294028903", "note": "", "contentType": "text/html", "charset": "utf-8", "filename": "10.html", "md5": "9348923f60330785bd54cb70130d5372", "mtime": 1476883671231, "tags": [], "relations": {}, "dateAdded": "2016-10-19T13:27:50Z", "dateModified": "2016-10-19T13:27:50Z" } }, { "key": "ABWHACBQ", "version": 77, "library": { "type": "group", "id": 718797, "name": "Research Supporting Garden-Based Learning", "links": { "alternate": { "href": "https://www.zotero.org/groups/research_supporting_garden-based_learning", "type": "text/html" } } }, "links": { "self": { "href": "https://api.zotero.org/groups/718797/items/ABWHACBQ", "type": "application/json" }, "alternate": { "href": "https://www.zotero.org/groups/research_supporting_garden-based_learning/items/ABWHACBQ", "type": "text/html" }, "up": { "href": "https://api.zotero.org/groups/718797/items/BP3WSZTK", "type": "application/json" } }, "meta": { "createdByUser": { "id": 3336978, "username": "gbl_cornell", "name": "", "links": { "alternate": { "href": "https://www.zotero.org/gbl_cornell", "type": "text/html" } } }, "numChildren": 0 }, "data": { "key": "ABWHACBQ", "version": 77, "parentItem": "BP3WSZTK", "itemType": "note", "note": "This study revealed important benefits of gardening on physical , emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, and highlighted a key role of gardening as a coping strategy for living with stressful life experiences.
