            "abstractNote": "Water and steam condensates from the Krafla, Námafjall and Theistareykir geothermal systems have been studied using hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios to gain more information on thermal fluid flow, the effect of rifting on individual fields and the provenance of recharge to these fields. At Krafla there are minor differences between individual wellfields, but recharge is essentially local. Only one well shows signs of a change in composition over a 6-year production period, but a local volcanic eruption in 1984 affected fumarole steam compositions. The nearby Námafjall field has isotopic compositions suggesting that recharge is ultimately derived from a long distance to the south, perhaps by a combination of surface and groundwater flow. Some local spring and shallow well compositions have been affected by the post-1975 rifting episode. The undrilled Theistareykir field has an inflow estimated to be of similar isotopic composition to Námafjall. Some fumaroles have an anomalously depleted δ18O composition, and Rayleigh condensation is postulated to explain them.",

            "abstractNote": "In the present study, a set of environmental tracers was applied to establish aquifer fingerprints and chemical equilibria in groundwater of highly saline environments in contact with the Zechstein formation. With this approach it was possible to resolve prevailing multi-component mixing processes in the groundwater which were found to occur on three time scales: A modern groundwater component could be identified and quantified by the presence of 3H and 3Hetri in the samples which indicates young apparent groundwater ages (0–50&#xa0;a). The presence of 14C in the samples could be used for a classification between the modern groundwater component, and an old groundwater component. Contact between meteoric water and Zechstein salts (naturally or anthropogenically induced) could be identified by the presence or absence of Permian crystallization water from the dissolution of e.g. Carnallite and/or Kieserite. Using this, localized interactions between water-bearing strata and saline formations were identified. Noble gas values (He, Ne, 3He/4He) showed strong variations and unusually high excess air values. Qualitatively, these could be explained by the impact of the highly saline environment on noble gas diffusion. Implications relating to potentially on-going salt dissolution in areas of the thickest (Stassfurt) salt series induced by groundwater flow are discussed, as the investigated area is heavily affected by ongoing subrosion.",

            "abstractNote": "Summary\nModelling variable soil water fluxes and transport processes under natural conditions in the unsaturated zone is often restricted and difficult to perform. Highly sophisticated numerical models are required and numerous parameters are needed. However, these parameters are difficult to estimate especially for heterogeneous systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether a simple lumped parameter approach is applicable in the unsaturated zone of cropped soils.\n\nThe environmental isotope contents of δ18O and δ2H were used as tracers to study the flow processes in two lysimeters containing the same soil and planted with different crops (maize monoculture and crop rotation). The results from lumped parameter modelling were compared with those obtained with a numerical model approach.\n\nIt was shown that the lumped parameter approach is, to some extent, applicable in the unsaturated zone. The simulations of the isotope contents in the discharge gave a general trend of mean transit times when the estimation of the tracer concentration in the inflow (input function) was weighted according to the amount of precipitation as well as when the observation period was separated into single vegetation periods. The resulting flow and transport parameters were similar to those from numerical modelling. The lumped model yielded adequate results particularly during the winter periods with grass cover. Although filled with the same soil material, different hydraulic flow systems were established in both lysimeters due to the differences in crop growth. In general, smaller fluxes were observed during crop rotation compared to maize monoculture whereas the smallest fluxes were found for canola.",

            "abstractNote": "We present a methodology for determining reservoir groundwater age and transit time probability distributions in a deterministic manner, considering advective–dispersive transport in steady velocity fields. In a first step, we propose to model the statistical distribution of groundwater age at aquifer scale by means of the classical advection–dispersion equation for a conservative and non-reactive tracer, associated to proper boundary conditions. The evaluated function corresponds to the density of probability of the random variable age, age being defined as the time elapsed since the water particles entered the aquifer. An adjoint backward model is introduced to characterize the life expectancy distribution, life expectancy being the time remaining before leaving the aquifer. By convolution of these two distributions, groundwater transit time distributions, from inlet to outlet, are fully defined for the entire aquifer domain. In a second step, an accurate and efficient method is introduced to simulate the transit time distribution at discharge zones. By applying the reservoir theory to advective–dispersive aquifer systems, we demonstrate that the discharge zone transit time distribution can be evaluated if the internal age probability distribution is known. The reservoir theory also applies to internal life expectancy probabilities yielding the recharge zone life expectancy distribution. Internal groundwater volumes are finally identified with respect to age and transit time. One- and two-dimensional theoretical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed mathematical models, and make inferences on the effect of aquifer structure and macro-dispersion on the distributions of age, life expectancy and transit time.",

            "abstractNote": "We present a methodology for determining reservoir groundwater age and transit time probability distributions in a deterministic manner, considering advective–dispersive transport in steady velocity fields. In a first step, we propose to model the statistical distribution of groundwater age at aquifer scale by means of the classical advection–dispersion equation for a conservative and non-reactive tracer, associated to proper boundary conditions. The evaluated function corresponds to the density of probability of the random variable age, age being defined as the time elapsed since the water particles entered the aquifer. An adjoint backward model is introduced to characterize the life expectancy distribution, life expectancy being the time remaining before leaving the aquifer. By convolution of these two distributions, groundwater transit time distributions, from inlet to outlet, are fully defined for the entire aquifer domain. In a second step, an accurate and efficient method is introduced to simulate the transit time distribution at discharge zones. By applying the reservoir theory to advective–dispersive aquifer systems, we demonstrate that the discharge zone transit time distribution can be evaluated if the internal age probability distribution is known. The reservoir theory also applies to internal life expectancy probabilities yielding the recharge zone life expectancy distribution. Internal groundwater volumes are finally identified with respect to age and transit time. One- and two-dimensional theoretical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed mathematical models, and make inferences on the effect of aquifer structure and macro-dispersion on the distributions of age, life expectancy and transit time.",

            "abstractNote": "A Microsoft® Visual Basic 6.0 (Microsoft Corporation, 1987–1998) code of 15 lumped-parameter models is presented for the analysis of mean residence time in aquifers. Groundwater flow systems obeying plug and exponential flow models and their combinations of parallel or serial connection can be simulated by these steady-state models which may include complications such as bypass flow and dead volume. Each model accepts tritium, krypton-85, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12 and CFC-113) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as environmental tracer. Retardation of gas tracers in the unsaturated zone and their degradation in the flow system may also be accounted for. The executable code has been tested to run under Windows 95 or higher operating systems. The results of comparisons between other comparable codes are discussed and the limitations are indicated.",
