From 1928- 1939, Obrebski engaged in\nresearch among peasants in the Balkans and Eastern Poland in terms of cultural persistence and change,\nethnicity, and the place of peasants in the newly created nations after World War I. In large part, interest\nin Obrebski's European work has been perpetuated by his analyses and the publication of the results in\nPolish. At present, the renewed interest is being fed by publications in Polish and English of Obrebski's\npapers in collections at the University of Warsaw and at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.\nHowever, Obrebski's research on Jamaica from 1947 to 1948 has received scant attention. Clearly, his\nfailure to complete a major monograph has contributed to this neglect. Nonetheless, the recent availability\nof his Jamaican data and several unfinished monographs at the Archives of the University of Massachusetts\nat Amherst, merit closer attention.",

"abstractNote": "Based on ethnography, oral history and archival research, this study examines the culture of the Accompong Maroons by focusing on the political, economic, social, religious and kinship institutions, foodways, and land history. This research demonstrates that like the South American Maroons, the Accompong Maroons differ in their ideology and symbolisms from the larger New World population. However, the Accompong Maroons have assimilated, accommodated and integrated into the state in every other aspect. As a consequence, the Accompong Maroons can only be considered maroons in name only. Today's Accompong Maroons resemble any other rural peasant community in Jamaica. Grounded in historical analysis, the study also demonstrate that social stratification in Accompong Town results from unequal access to land and other resources, lack of economic infrastructure, and constraints on food marketeers and migration. This finding does not support the concept of communalism presented in previous studies.",

"abstractNote": "On the basis of historical and ethnographic research, this article examines three ‘cosmopolitan’ traditions in the Caribbean. It shows that, while the first tradition derives from the universalist intellectual tradition of the European Enlightenment, the other two are linked to vernacular, local Caribbean traditions. These cosmopolitan traditions, however, should not be seen to involve mutually exclusive understandings and practices. Rather, they offer mutually constitutive sources of (self)knowledge and frameworks of social interaction that can be evoked for various pragmatic and intellectual purposes as individuals and communities reflect on, and engage with, inequality in social life.",

Lambros Comitas, an anthropology professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, taped these events at the request and invitation of Mortimo Planno, a powerful and striking figure. Kumi, as known by his friends, played a pivotal role in the public unfolding of the Rastafarian movement in Jamaica. He also played a critically important part in initiating the politically potent study of that movement. As part of his lifelong dedication to the movement, he participated as a Rastafarian member in the historic Government Mission to Africa, a mission sent to explore the possibilities of repatriation. These films contain Rastafarian rites and an Amharic lesson.",

"abstractNote": "The West Indies represent an amalgamation of African, European and in some cases, East Asian sources, but the contributions from each ethnic group remain relatively unexplored from a genetic perspective. In the present study, we report, for the first time, allelic frequency data across the complete set of 15 autosomal STR loci for general collections from Haiti and Jamaica, which were subsequently used to examine the genetic diversity present in each island population. Our results indicate that although both Haiti and Jamaica display genetic affinities with the continental African collections, a stronger African signal is detected in Haiti than in Jamaica. Although only minimal contributions from non-African sources were observed in Haiti, Jamaica displays genetic input from both European and East Asian sources, an admixture profile similar to other New World collections of African descent analyzed in this report. The divergent genetic signatures present in these populations allude to the different migratory events of Africans, Europeans, and East Asians into the New World.
